When you put it that way…

… that Mike Bobo fella didn’t do such a bad job.

* Only two SEC schools have scored more than 300 touchdowns over the last five seasons — Alabama (312) and Georgia (301).

* Georgia is one of only three league schools to have scored more than 50 touchdowns in each of the last five seasons (along with Alabama and South Carolina).

* Only two SEC schools have rolled up more than 29,000 yards of total offense over the last five seasons — Alabama (29,874) and Georgia (29,024).

* Georgia and Alabama are the only two schools in the conference to post more than 5,000 yards of total offense in each of the last five seasons.

* Only two schools — Georgia and Alabama — have had their quarterback rank in the top five in the league for QB rating in each of the last five seasons.

* In his eight seasons as Georgia’s offensive coordinator, Bobo’s offenses averaged more than 30 points per game seven times (averaging 28 in 2009).

It’s a good thing Todd Grantham was there to hold things together.

My biggest surprise from reading those stats was how potent and consistent Alabama’s offense has been.

    • You’re right! For all of those that blame the lack of championship on Bobo, they were wrong. It has pretty much been on the other side of the ball whether that was Martinez or Grantham. Pruitt hasn’t been here long enough to put him in with them.

This year both units put up two stinkers – offense (UF and tech) and defense (USCe and UF). I would suggest the offense played well enough to win the USCe game, and the defense played well enough in regulation in the tech game. The UF game was a complete head scratcher. This team should have been 11-1 and in Atlanta playing for a play-off berth.

Wait, the O missed a FG and had two fumbles inside tech 5, that is not a bad offensive day. It was just a bad day.

        • That’s true. Also, not getting 7 on 1st and goal inside the 5 with 5 shots at it. My point was the defense played well enough to win the game in regulation without the mistakes on offense.

I read Bobo’s bio in the Coloradoan yesterday. I said, “Man, this Bobo guy was pretty good at Georgia.”

There is a middle ground between “Good Riddance Bobo” and “OMG Worlds are Colliding” because we let him go. The offense has been amazing, but the talent level has been, too. We’re going to miss Bobo, but it’s more likely we get someone just as good to replace him than it is we get another QB like Aaron Murray. I’d say it might be another 30 years before we see another Gurley, but we may already have.

I think I have talked about this before, but the Mike Bobo I remember is the one hobbling around on the sidelines, screaming at Hines Ward to “throw the ball, throw the ball.”

In a world of hired guns of various calibers as coaches, Mike Bobo answered momma’s call before the phone rang. He is now, and will always be a great Dawg. Replacing him as a play caller should be a snap…we got many great play callers right here in GTP-Land. But replacing him with another total package is not gonna be easy.

Hate to see you go, Mike, but all the best. Live long and prosper.

This can’t be true. All the comments I’ve read on the interwebz say Bobo was terrible. The only coach in America worse is Richt.

Bobo don’t matter no more, Russ, it is his replacement that will be terrible, won’t call the right play, chokes in the red zone…etc, etc, etc, etc,

You’re right, Scorp. Let me be the first to say our unnamed OC is a boob and doesn’t have the killer instinct/is too aggressive/is too young/past his prime. Fire (insert name here)!

Unless our defense actually improves and we can actually win games 24-21 again, in which case our new OC will be a jean-yus and much better than that Bobo guy with his fancy pancy stats.

Stop with the “All the comments…say Bobo was terrible” narrative. It wasn’t even true 4-5 years ago when he clearly wasn’t as good as he is now. The fire Bobo crowd has definitely diminished as he became a better OC.

That may be your perception, Penny, but it seemed to me the experts continually called plays better (in their own minds) than did Bobo…in certain situations…and their carping was constant, even when the results belied the carp.

Scorp, obviously there is still criticism of Bobo but it’s no where near as constant or widespread as it used to be when he clearly wasn’t as good, and in my perception those that are constantly criticizing him are in the minority. The majority of people posting here are level headed enough to acknowledge we had a great OC, but there still should be room for questioning the USCe debacle, just like there was reason to call out CMR for the squib kick and timeout against Tech, etc.

There is a lot of angst on some of our message boards saying we are a terrible fan base because we dare criticize Bobo, Richt, or B-M. But criticizing =/= lack of appreciation by most that we’re not UT or UF over the last few years.

Part of the problem is calling a playcall that can be justified a “debacle.” It’s unfair to lay the SC loss at Bobo’s feet for one play that was blown up by a good defensive play, but that is what consistently happens, whether here on sports radio or in real life.

Ok, Penny…there are fewer of them than before, but they are still very prominent. Go back and read the posts following the Tech game. Or South Carolina.

My problem is not criticizing Georgia football, it is criticism by folks who just like to bitch and really know nothing.

All coaches make mistakes, or their teams or coaching staffs make mistakes…even Sauron. But would anybody in their right minds say Nick Saban is a weak defensive mind? Or a mediocre football coach?

You can “justify” that play call, but you have to work hard to do it. Bottom line, the game was on the line and they couldn’t stop the run and the ball was put in Mason’s hands instead of Gurley’s. First and goal from the 10 would have been one thing…but First and goal from the FOUR…c’mon man!

Oh, and Dawgfan I don’t blame Bobo for the loss at all…just criticizing that play call. There were other reasons contributing to the loss…i.e. missed field goals and defense.

You don’t, but there are plenty who do. And that’s my problem with the criticism of Bobo. It’s not unfounded; it’s just blown way out of proportion. ALL I heard in real life the week after that game was how that play blew the game. If our defense hadn’t made Dylan Thomas look like Joe Montana, it would never have been an issue. And, no, I don’t have to work any harder at justifying that playcall as any other playcall. It’s a difference of opinion; in my opinion, the playcall was valid. If you don’t believe that, that’s fine.

I agree with this. Some of us love Bobo and CMR but a lot of the reason we come here is to shoot the bull. Pointing out when they did something dumb doesn’t mean you want them fired or even that they didn’t call a good game overall, etc – sometimes it’s just the obvious thing to discuss. In fact, maybe we ought to cut each other a bit more slack when WE are wrong

  8. I have been a vocal Bobo Fan from his playing days thru all of his coaching & recruiting days, His offense won games for us when the defense & special teams were totally inept, He will be missed.
In my opinion, there is no one out there that can do as good a job as
Bobo did as OC. My optimism went down the drain when Bobo Left.

A few things I believe are being overlooked:
In the world outside all the “genius” bloggers, and confirmed by CSU AD Bobo’s acumen apparently is highly regarded by those who do the hiring.
Also, given the injuries, suspensions, etc. over the past two years I would challenge anyone to have consistently put up the numbers this offense did week in and week out.
For all the “Fire Bobo” ilk finding a replacement will be as challenging as filling the space between your ears.

I would like to thank CTG for getting a 3 and out against Bama after Bobo went 3 and out in 2 consecutive critical possessions. Giving Murray the chance to go to the 6 yard line.

The same Grantham coached d that allowed two 150 yd rushers in the game? The same Grantham d that gave up the lead in the 4th quarter on a 45 yd td pass that was the reason UGA needed to score on the final drive?

This is how it has been since Bobo became OC. He calls a great game and gets crucified for one or two calls that didn’t pan out. Meanwhile, the DC of the hour gets a pass for failure after failure but for providing one opportunity to put the game away that Bobo doesn’t take advantage of. It’s a bullshit way to evaluate someone’s playcalling ability.

By the way, I scream as much as anyone when stuff goes wrong on offense during games. I simply think that in the supposedly more rational days after a game, Bobo has gotten a lot of shit slung his way for losses that weren’t his fault.

When it was critical Gratham managed to pull out a series.

BTW Bobo went 3 and out or turnover 7 of 15 possessions hardly better than CTG.
