The ugliest part of the night

As the bowl game progressed, I started to notice a funky rumor cropping up – that Richt intended to retire afterwards.  It evidently swept through the press box.  He was asked about it in the post game presser.  (Dial it up to about the 10:20 mark.)

Don’t believe Twitter. Mark Richt is Georgia’s head football coach and the end isn’t in sight.

In fact, Richt was not even aware of the rumors until he was asked about them in said press conference. When asked where he thought the rumors stemmed from, Richt pled ignorance.

“I have no idea,” Richt said. “I have no idea. [Returning] is the plan.”

Then Richt turned to freshman tailback Nick Chubb who was also in the room.

“You can ask the team,” Richt said. “Nick? Am I retiring?”

The entire room shifted its focus to the tailback sitting silently and idly on a stool near the room’s exit.

A man of few words, Chubb didn’t even open his mouth. He simply shook his head from side to side.

This is what comes of having an athletic director who wants everyone to know that he’s not afraid to make the tough decisions… while avoiding making the tough decisions.

Look, when it comes to this, I don’t care which side of the Richt should stay/Richt should go divide you find yourself on.  Everyone should be able to agree that throwing your head coach in no-man’s land and leaving him to fend for himself is bad for the program.  If you’re Richt’s boss and you want Richt gone, have the stones to fire him and stand behind your rationale that Georgia needs to do better than settle for 10-win seasons.  But if you can’t bring yourself to pull the trigger, then you have no choice but to back his play.  Because otherwise, the message you’ve sent to the rest of the world is that your coach is still there, but his administrative support is in short supply.  And that’s how you get to depressing moments in a press conference after a big win.

I have no idea why McGarity has let things deteriorate to this point.  Maybe he believes that letting Richt twist in the wind is the way to motivate him.  Maybe he hopes that he can manuever Richt into walking away to avoid paying off the rest of his contract.  Maybe he doesn’t have the stomach to live with the consequences of having to explain a decision to can a SEC head coach who now has nine 10-win seasons on his résumé.  I don’t know much except that McGarity has demonstrated repeatedly throughout this season that he is lacking in PR skills.

This is a full-blown mess.  And it’s why I keep harping on things like coaches’ pay and infrastructure spending.  It’s not that these are necessary items in the sense that the program will collapse without addressing them.  It’s that they’re part and parcel of how the program is perceived and how it is sold to recruits.  And, yes, in the short-run, the latter doesn’t seem to be affected.  But it’s a helluva gamble to expect moments like that presser don’t wind up eroding that over the long haul.

I don’t know who needs to step up at Butts-Mehre.  But somebody does.

Senator, I’m curious about what you are implying. Are you saying someone at BM started the rumor or leaked something to the press? Are you suggesting BM should have taken to social media to quash the rumor in the middle of the game? I think I agree with everything you said but feel like I am missing something. Hopefully I’m not the only one who needs to have some dots connected. Thanks and I’ll hang up and listen

You’ve got a situation where there’s clearly friction between the AD and the football staff. Pruitt’s outburst should have been a warning to McGarity that there was real frustration over management of the program and that everyone needed to be on the same page, or at least keep differences in house. Instead, McGarity has chosen to take his position public, as evidenced by that interview with Mark Bradley.

What you’ve got now is a poisoned atmosphere. It’s easy to start rumors that people want to believe have credence and that’s what I saw last night.

Social media isn’t where you fix this. You fix this by nailing down contracts, crowing about them as proof that B-M backs Richt and doing what it takes to fill the open slots on the staff with home run hires.

Or you fire Richt and have the balls to stand behind the call. It’s that simple. Or at least it should be.

Well said. The only thing worse than making a bad decision is making no decision at all. At least those who make bad decisions may have been trying to do the right thing. McGarity is a complete and unmitigated train wreck. He is single-handedly going to sink our ship.

Up here in Maine there aren’t that many college football fans, especially SEC fans, but I did have a guy who is a casual fan ask me why there is so much debate about Richt. He is aware that despite having a pretty impressive record of wins and losses Richt continues to be second guessed by certain fan groups. I think this is directly attributable to two factors, 1) the Lunatic Fringe Dawg fan who thinks any thing short of the NC is failure and 2) McGarity dangling the entire staff in the wind by not committing to them contractually. I was stunned when the “buy out” clause for Richt’s contract was removed, which essentially says “by by see you” if he chooses to leave and the lack of respect to Bobo, before he was offered the CSU job, in being one of the lowest paid coordinators in the SEC.

My issue with McGarity is, if he believes in this group of coaches he should say so publicly and the best way to do that is to pay them so that they can’t be easily bought off. If he doesn’t believe in them, then grow a pair and let them go. This bull shit “evaluate at the end of the season” is ridiculous. He has 14 years of data on which to make his decision.

And let’s be real, if at the beginning of the year if we had known that we would only have Gurley 6 games, Marshall would be a non-factor, MItchell and Scott-Wesley wouldn’t play until game 8 or so etc. wouldn’t ten wins be about what we would have expected? I know it was frustrating to lose those three games but this team showed fortitude and adaptability all season long and the coaches deserve lots of credit for that.

Agreed, driving back from Atlanta, I stopped for the night in Mobile. The hotel manager and I were watching the USC-Neb game when he asked me about Richt and if I thought he was the right guy. I was a little too enthusiastic when I told him how idiotic it would be to get rid of the winningest coach (by percentage) in UGA history, who owns winning records over all our rivals except UF (who we’ve won 3 of the last 4 from) and was 5 yards away from stomping ND for the BCS title in 2012.

I get that all fanbases have a lunatic fringe, but it seems to me that these rumors only come up about Richt when it’s the national press talking. I don’t get it.

+1. Very well said Tim. The coaching staff could clearly do somethings better, but considering the injuries, a 10 win season ain’t too bad. Regardless, McFrugal has been on the job long enough now that these are “his guys” and he either needs to support them or stop being a jellyfish and do something about it.

McGarity should have the savvy to know that if it becomes a choice between him vs. Richt or even a him vs. Pruitt, he’s going to lose every time.

The poll regarding Richt GTP ran several weeks ago was illuminating. I expected a majority of voters to support Richt. I even thought it might be as much as 66% pro-Richt. So I was surprised when the results showed almost 90% support. And it wasn’t just a few people voting repeatedly for Richt. I was particularly struck by the comments. There were many long, thoughtful statements about Richt by people who rarely, if ever, post on this site. And an overwhelming majority of them backed Richt both because they thought he’s done a good job and because they like him personally. The poll showed me there is a deep reservoir of support for Richt, and if anything, this support tends to be underestimated by media and the fans (it certainly was by me). McGarity and the rest of the administration should take heed.

You don’t get NCs as a regular thing…I believe that Tom Osborne, another great coach at a great program, took about twenty years to win a NC. There are so many damn good coaches and a few of them damn good men, that labor for their schools…are regarded as competent coaches that are compensated and complimented by their administrations and fans but do not take home NCs. Ten win seasons, folks, is outstanding and even moreso in the SEC!!! McG may not understand this but I expect GTP fans to do so. Thank heavens for Mark Richt..an outstanding coach and an outstanding man. Go Dawgs!!

      • If anything, I thought McGarrity gave canned responses and held back from criticizing Richt for the GT and UF games. He should pay coaches and give Richt monetarily everything he needs, including facilities, but why should he “crow” about the great job Richt is doing when Richt hasn’t won a conference title in 9 years and UGA hasn’t played for a NC in 32 years?

He’s not his dad, he is the AD, and he has an independent duty to the school to evaluate Richt honestly. Isn’t it possible, he can still believe Richt is capable of winning a championship but he is disappointed in some of his decisions and conflicted about whether he believes Richt will ultimately get to the highest level? Should he just keep rolling over the contract and give loving soundbytes ad nauseum? This is a tough business with tough expectations. Sometimes good PR means being honest and not giving AD speak up until the press conference when you announce a firing.

The unconditional love for Richt on here is inversely proportional to the McGarriy hate. Suggesting McGarrity is somehow responsible for the rumor of the retirement is getting into “black helicopter” territory.

Exactly – if McGarity has issues or concerns, he should be addressing them directly with the coach, not giving grist to the AJC-mill.
Also, if you’re McGarity, you know going in to an interview like that what the AJC is interested in, and if you’re going to give milquetoast and vague answers, why bother. My reaction at the time the interview was published was, why the hell would he give an interview like that with games to be played, if how the team performs in a bowl game is part of your evaluation criteria. Why the hell wouldn’t you wait a month to see what happened and you have all the “data points” you need before popping off and looking and sounding like a fool…

We can’t blame Morehead for the situation arising from “the conference room door ajar” to his installation as President, but we can sure hold him responsible for the situation continuing with McGarity. The longer McG is here, the more the load falls on Morehead to get rid of McG.. It has gone too far for McG To extricate himself w/o egg on his face and the rub has become whether we keep McG or not.

And the longer Morehead lets this play out, the more the ball falls into the alumni court. All talk at this point of a well-defined grind going on is bullshit unless we act. Now. If we truly are behind Richt, we must make the admin see the folly of their ways.

I obsessively read everything I can find about Georgia football that isn’t the Dawgvent. I love everything you do here, Senator; you write my favorite Georgia football blog. That said, I think you’ve been reading WAY too much into McGarity’s comments about evaluating teams at the end of the season and the importance of ten wins. He could just as easily been positioning himself to give Richt a pay increase after a tenth win as he could have been wanting to can him if he didn’t get it. I don’t get the impression that Richt’s job is in any sort of real jeopardy and I don’t get the impression that Richt is lacking support on Butts-Mehre’s top floor. McGarity’s management style appears to be staying somewhat aloof and making his people work hard for praise. I’m OK with that. I think Richt is OK with that. I don’t get the impression that Richt has even given thought to getting his resume up to date just in case or anything.

I also don’t think this rumor has anything to do with any sort of climate inside the athletic department. Some idiot decided to start a rumor and since Richt was on live TV, he couldn’t do the ol’ “celebrity died in car crash” rumor. There are those out there who want Coach Richt to move on, and the rumor monger was likely one of them. However, I don’t think those folks can count Georgia’s AD among their numbers.

Bradley Q: Do you think Richt is capable of delivering a championship?

McG A: Until I’m convinced he is not, then I believe he can.

That answer is 180 degrees the opposite direction of leadership. It is a yes or no question. The answer needs to be Yes – or a move should be made – period. If that is a direct quote, McG needs to go.

We expect all of our teams in every sport to compete for championships and there isn’t one coach employed by this University that I don’t believe can deliver a championship.”

One thing I notice is that every time a sideline reporter questions Richt (at least in the last couple of years), he seems to go all “smart ass” on her. Richt looks really tired. Look, I’m not his next door neighbor or in his Sunday school class, so I’m not sure if he’s like this all the time. He just doesn’t seem passionate about much. Not really trying to start an argument, but what I saw of Richt on the sidelines last night appeared to be a football coach who was pretty damned engaged in a big game. Talking to coaches, players, running out on the field to check on an injured player (Mauger)…and certainly giving his input to John Lilly up in the booth.

If he seemed bored doing the halftime sideline interview maybe it is because the halftime sideline interview is boring.

TV wants us to believe the stupid walking to the lockerroom at the half interview is going to produce something meaningful…if it does for you that’s great, but it does nothing, means nothing to me.

I’ve expressed my doubts about Richt as a head coach but yeah you either back him and his staff 100% or you fire the guy and have the stones to stand behind your decision. This is leadership/ management 101.

Somebody needs to be fired. That will change things.

One problem is the small portion of the fan base that wants to fire Richt even if it leaves the program in tatters is driving the narrative, to use a clichéd journalism phrase. Sports reporters seek controversy, and seeing a few message boards run solely by dumbasses makes them think the entire fan base is grabbing spears and torches.

As for McGarity, his biggest mistake is talking to Mark Bradley, whose sole skill is poking a stick in the eye of Georgia fans.

McGarity. I’ll say it again. He just may not have the right stuff. Many thought he did simply because he occupied the same building at UF as did Foley. The two peas is a pod mindset. Lot of shelled pods reveal some bad peas. Maybe the AD should zip it up and stop pissing on himself. Hell Foley pissed on himself in football program once Meyer left. They got lucky with that hire and lived off it…includes the AD.
Last nite was a good game. No it was outstanding. But when it was over the press culture and some zealots of Bobo want to change the game. In an earlier post I tried to say that. Amazed how the Georgia news media and fans allow themselves to get into this. It is not good.
Bobo is gone. Grantham is gone, Friend is gone. CMR is on board. I have had issues with the good man. He is HC. He is at the well one more time. He has the opportunity to hire an excellent young OC and OL coach. I’m excited to see what he does. But McGarity had better not stand in the way. He could get leveled like Grantham’s D line last night.
37-14. 10-3. Senior class with 40 wins. Only 3 teams in UGA history has that. Chubb sets records. The OLine was dominate. Talk about Chubb all you want. And I do, he and Cook at FSU are the best young RBs in D1. But somebody had better start talking about Greg Pyke. The young man is a possible All American lineman. Thought Ramsey was outstanding how he was put into the game…Grantham, weather, right of the bench. give a tough play call…he simply did not put enough air under the ball or Mitchell gets 6. Those 2 are going to have some 6s in ’15. But Ramsey was 4 for 5 on 3rd down passes. Damn people that is off the fucking chart.
What in the fuck is wrong with the Red and Black, the Georgia press, and who in the hell who ever listens to those fucking asses on TV caling games. I listen to Scott Howard and Company for all games.
Ring in the new year CMR and staff with 2 good hires and some more players. For damn sure you set the Chapel Bell on fire last night.

Not sure how they vote after the bowls. Or how the games go today and the NC, but last nite convinced me this team is definitely a top 10.
And CMR and staff did not let up. Dropped the hammer and kept framing points on the board, downs, distance, and clock. Take that McGarity, Bobo, Grantham, and whoever the hell else.
There are plenty of ADs out there who would gladly come to Georgia. AD’s job. Start paying these guys and hires. Get out of their way. Provide the means, facilities, and atmosphere for champsionship teams at UGA. And stop running your damn mouth and giving interviews, stupid.
This team had one bad game…UF…and should not have happened. Bad call in Columbia, bad call and time management against GT, fought thru injuries and NCAA [another screw up by the AD] investigation.
No other team they faced knew the Dawgs like Louisville did because of Grantham. 3 key injuries last nite. No season OC. And the Dawgs took them to the wood shed last nigth.
They are a top 10. Let’s hear the B-M brain trust push that for the next few days.

This might be a little simplistic, but I think McGarity is right now where Richt was in 2008/2008–the playing field around him has changed and he doesn’t know which way to row yet. So every decision or comment is reactionary and wishywashy. Richt seemed to find his way in the post-Saban at Bama world, maybe McG will to in the arms race that’s just beginning.

All Richt really meant was that he needed to get new tires for his Ford. But up there in NASCAR land new tires is “re-tire”….its a semantic differential.

Tweeters, and, apparently others, are sometimes confused by this.

  20. The McGarity interview was subversive and destabilizing. Like Chuck Oliver voicing the opinions of dipshits by asking Richt why Murray “couldn’t win the big one”, Bradley came loaded with questions from the lunatic fringe which McGarity then proceeded to step on his dick answering them by trying to convince everyone he could make the big calls. The problem was that he made the interview about himself, and left a trail of garbage behind that Richt had to pick up at the press conference last night. Truly sad.

On an up note, that game was one of the most satisfying ones I’ve watched in a while. Sticking it to those guys was blissful, and I was proud of the way Coach and the kids punched that team in the mouth. Watching storied programs like Texas and Oklahoma stink it up the past few days made me even happier to have Richt on board.

And Richt’s reply is still one of my all time favorites for a coach. “Is that YOU saying that, or someone else? If it’s you then i’ll answer the question…” Then coming back to get Murray’s back after the interview was over made me extra proud. Screw the pot stirring hacks. They’re not journalists.

Is McGarity his own man or is he doing the Athletic Board’s bidding? I guess I am asking who is really running the show. I have only written one letter concerning UGA since I graduated decades ago and that was my disgust with Michael Adams/Leeburn and I sent to my State Rep. I am considering writting my second one about McGarity, but I guess it would be a waste of time just like the first one was.

Coach Eaves was AD when I was an undergraduate and then Coach Dooley. We seemed to go in a backwards direction with the hiring of Damon Evans (seemed more of a PR move than vetting character a little more closely). I would love to now see someone who is a bit more dedicated to athletics than ego and self-posturing. If there is anyone out there who agrees please get in touch with President’s office and pass along those sentiments. I have personally talked with McGarity and he certainly knows how this Alumnus feels about the harm of creating ego-centric and needless power struggles where there needs to be strength in leadership – please let your voices be heard and thanks for this forum!.

Where I lost it in the AJC interview with McGarity a few weeks ago was this exchange:

Q: Do you think Richt has underachieved?
A: I’ve always said that I want to see the full body of work.

Fourteen years isn’t enough of a baseline of data? A decade and a half? How does he think a comment like that impacts Richt’s ability to recruit or to find an offensive coordinator? I can’t decide if McGarity is just a complete coward or just being a mealy-mouthed passive-aggressive.

Now we’re two months from closing out an historic recruiting class while interviewing candidates to replace the most prolific offensive coordinator in program history, and you’re leaving it to your head coach to put out fires like this? I can’t tell you how livid I would be if I were Richt.

I do think this exchange from Emerson’s blog over the summer, in which McGarity explained part of his rationale for canceling the Louisville series, is instructive:
“Charlie Strong, knowing him the way I do, he would have had Louisville come in and take care of business,” McGarity told me in August of 2011.
    http://www.macon.com/2014/01/04/2863110_mcgarity-on-charlie-strong-three.html?rh=1

McGarity has never had Richt’s back, and, if I were Richt, I’d be talking to Jere Morehead about what he’s going to do about it.

The best way to gain our confidence is for UGA to step up and support the the head coach and provide the football staff with the resources and decision-making authority needed to succeed on the field.

Leave the football decisions to the football men and stop cutting corners on resources. Invest in the athletic program instead of the Foundation. Be willing to wait a year and learn that Foundation contributions will actually be higher when supporters earn the confidence that everyone is aligned behind the same goals.

We know Jere is a bright academic-minded leader and probably feels he owes part of his rise to Dr. Adams. But Jere is far enough into his position to be his own man and take the risk that comes with making an increased investment in the athletic program. He may be surprised to see how much support he would receive if he were to reverse Dr. Adams’ policy of short cutting the athletic revenues by taking the money up front.

Given the poor PR savvy in the B-M administrative offices, the less said the better. Just call the board meeting, approve the IPF, and provide the compensation needed to keep the current staff and have them hire the right guys to complement the offensive philosophy. Do this and focus the bean counters on handling the increased revenue instead of finding new ways to cut corners and meddling in the football and disciplinary decisions of the coaching staff.

    Actions speak louder than words.

I may have missed it during my reading, but the Bradley interview link above didn’t include one of my “favorite” of ADGM’s strange public comments where he addressed Bobo’s salary by saying effectively “Mark has a pool of money for his assistants and he allocates it how he sees fit.”

Completely spineless…I cannot think of another AD who would throw their head coach under the bus in such a manner. As if reducing the rest of the staff’s salary by 10% to make Bobo’s salary more competitive is a decision Richt could realistically make and maintain any type of staff harmony.

Seemingly every public comment from ADGM this season has been completely self serving…HE handled Gurley correctly, HE is working on the indoor facility and the coaches don’t know what they’re talking about, HE has the balls to fire a coach (the connotation being he’s ready to do so with CMR if the man would simply lose enough to give him a chance). It’s the exact opposite of the way I would expect a professional and capable AD to handle himself. The Pruitt / IPF comment being the most clear example…his clarification of the timeline was transparently defensive and only intended to help one person…ADGM. And it was done at the expense of the greater good of the program, if you take Pruitt’s comments to be strictly for recruiting purposes as any logical observer would.

And while I have trouble lending credence to the crazier rumors floating around, it’s difficult to reflect on Greg’s statements and not feel as if for some unknown reason he is trying to undermine the program. To what end and why I have no idea…but his public behavior is at best tone deaf and unacceptable.

If McGarity were to fie Richt – wouldn’t surprise me to see Spurrier resign specifically to give Richt the job at USCe.

Would like to see Morehead quietly send Greg Mac into the good night quietly in the offseason.

Hell, the Sexual Harassment and Swimming debacles are enough by themselves. From what rumors I heard, Greg does not Buy In or Get It about the changing landscape of player rights versus the NCAA and Colleges and he pitched a very personal ‘Hissy Fit’ about the Gurley situation that only subsided when Jere Morehead stepped into the gap in the hedges.

My God, UGA should be expending the 3-5 million it gives back to the University’s general fund to pay the players the stipend authorized by Federal Court.

Don’t even get me started on the rumored White Elephant Adam’s legacy of the Athletic Department retiring the debt on a freaking parking deck. Which is the real reason we don’t have an IPF from what have heard. Would like to see the specifics on that fiasco… Anybody got the Adams backstory?

The hiring of Greg McFuggle was based on his having carried the water for J Foley. Foley has made two hires in his career that worked Billy Donavan and Urban the Great. The rest sucked. Greg background is with the same old boy network that has held UGA back for decades. B-M is like a damn retirement home for football hangers on. Steve Greer, Mike Cavan, Joe T etc. all DGD’s but why are they entitled to a job for life? I’m glad that Mike Bobo took his skills to CSU. He was perhaps the most under appreciated assistant coach in the history of football. My son who graduated in 2001 hates him and it’s totally irrational. Loyalty is usually a two way street, except apparently to a dog/Dawg coach. Keep trying to please the owner/fans even when they kick the S out of them. Mark Richt may not be a Saint but he sure as heck has to have the patients of one to work for UGA.
