You just keep on using me, ’til you use me up.

I know you guys don’t like it when I link to a Mark Bradley piece, but, really, you ought to read this one, as Bradley has outdone himself.  From the header to the last punctuation mark, he’s reached the pinnacle of the Mt. Everest of trolling and planted his flag.

Georgia’s AD has committed his share of unforced PR errors recently, but agreeing to be interviewed by Bradley probably ranks as the dumbest of all.

I swear, if the day ever comes when McGarity does fire Richt, you know Bradley’s going to write a column urging Georgia to hire the genius.

  2. Bradley is so myopic and so biased he has no claim to any sort of journalistic independence or discipline. He is in short, a person with limited abilities to see outside his own shadow. Which is why he writes for such a second rate, poorly managed, hopelessly sophomoric newspaper. He is, in short, pathetic.

Let this be a lesson for McGarity – this is what happens when you allow yourself to hang around with idiots even though sometimes I wonder if he’ll ever learn. Maybe my favorite line from the article…This, I submit, is AD-speak for, “Back atcha”….jeez!

I’ve said it before. Sports writers are no longer journalists (not sure if Bradley was ever one of those anyway). They are now Trolls because print media is almost dead. The AJC no longer is a news outlet. It’s a dinosaur struggling in the tar pit gasping for air.

I guess I’m unclear on who’s being trolled, although I’ll concede there was an effort to do so (for what other reason do AJC columnists expend valuable pixels?).

The ambivalence around this program prior to the Belk Bowl was pretty universal — among fans, McGarity and Bradley. It mostly still is. The Louisville win doesn’t/shouldn’t whitewash for anyone the fact that inexcusable losses to a pair of 7-win Florida and South Carolina teams cost us the division and a shot at the playoff, and that our coaches snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against the eternal enemy. And no one remains in denial that that inconsistent focus over a season is a well-documented pattern in Richt’s tenure.

So, assuming Bradley sought to troll Richt devotees, I’m surprised he thought that contingent was large enough to merit trolling. Fourteen years in, we’re all pretty eyes-wide-open.

I think, in a hamfisted but well-meaning way, McGarity tried to inject a constructive tension into a program given to lapses of focus and intensity. As I said earlier, it came across as mealy-mouthed and passive aggressive, but the somewhat garbled message was that 10 wins was his over/under for this season, and Richt’s crew was going into the bowl game still a game under. Knowing what I now know of our competition, 10 wins would be my over/under as well. So Richt did his part, and now McGarity seems to be doing his.

Reflecting on it a bit, I think I and others may have made too much of McGarity’s salary pool comments. I’m sure he’s aware of market realities and I’m sure his coaches’ agents have increased that awareness. Their side of the negotiation is to reference market rates and his counter is to reference performance. So for him to publicly bring up the market side would be akin to negotiating with himself.

He’s supposed to fully support his HC publicly until he is no longer the head coach. If he wants to privately tell Richt that he is unsatisfied with his performance then fine. But publicly leaving him hanging in the wind is damaging to perceptions of the program, recruiting, and internal morale. This is management 101. Besides, do you think Mcgarity was really going to fire Richt if we lost the bowl? If so, that really goes against his “body of work” comments to go from firing to extending based on 1 game.

    • Chi-town Dawg

I disagree with your perceptions over McGarity and the way he’s handled a number of things. For starters his “salary pool” comment gives the impression that it’s CMR’s fault if “he chooses” to not pay his assistant coaches what they’re worth even though I doubt this is the case. As a point of reference it’s amazing how fast the checkbook opened up and the “salary pool” was a non-issue for retaining Pruitt. I also fault GM for some of his answers in the Bradley interview as adding fuel to the fire with the B-M dissension meme and lack of support for Richt. As a sidenote, rumors were swirling that not only Pruitt, but also McLendon and Rocker were contemplating lateral movement jobs, which doesn’t happen unless you give the appearance that you don’t fully support your HC, which is exactly what McGarity did in the AJC article and with his other actions. Don’t even get me started on the IPF, locker room, and Gurley situations. I’m glad that he moved quickly with the contract extensions for Richt and Pruitt, but both moves had the feel of being reactionary or defensive (Pruitt’s extension communication came out late on a Friday night I believe). Even the communication of the moves was poorly handled by McGarity (I’m still waiting for my email) as if it was thrown together at the last minute – which is probably the way it actually occurred. I expected a lot more from McGarity when he was hired, but my view of him has declined further and further every year.

Anyone who doesn’t see the malfunctions of this AD, especially with regard to the salary pool comment, is beyond enlightening. For a person hired as such a high level in a decent sized “business” he is extraordinarily clumsy.

And it isn’t just the sports department that lacks journalistic integrity folks, it started at the AJC long before Bradley came aboard. And like others, I didn’t click it either, could care less about his thoughts, or motives.

    1) anyone who thinks that we coulda woulda beaten Alabama is out they damn mind. Cardale Jones is no Hutson Mason. Third string or no the kid brought things to the table that Mason never could. 6′ 5″ 250 and can run with a strong arm allowed OSU a shot and give them credit: they saw the path, game planned for it, had the personnel to make it work and executed it. It was still a very tight game. We, on the other hand, would have had no path sad to say. If there is a bright spot in 2014 its that we didn’t have to watch Alabama dismantle Hutson Mason.

    2) who knows what leads to these types of interviews or what thoughts go through the minds of the interviewee. Perhaps Bradley extorted the interview out of him: “I’m planning on writing a story that says….would rather have an interview. Your choice.” Also I think that people who get to where McGarrity has gotten tend to be the type that want to be all things to all people and recognize that what they say needs to have, lets say a bit of wiggle room. Others may call it “bullshit.” If McGarrity fully endorses CMR then he goes down with him in the event that a change comes to pass, If he undercuts CMR then CMR works behind the scenes to get a new AD in place. CMR probably still has to juice to do that if he felt it necessary.

Who knows what shit stirring is/was going on, but my suggestion would be to take all of it with a grain of salt. At the end of the day the only thing that matters is wins and losses. Because CMR is a nice guy he gets a little bit more rope that a complete asshole would but it isn’t that much more rope.

If I had to guess the McGarrity/CJP public spat over the IPF was/is somewhat unpleasant with CMR backing up his DC and the AD pissed that he was shown up in the media. CJP doesn’t understand diplomacy and probably doesn’t think its worth his time to worry about it. Remember the story about him telling his dad/coach that his play calling was for shit after a loss and in front of the team when he was like 10? I do. People don’t change that much. He’s still that kid whose competitive edge makes him run his mouth when maybe more discretion is called for. The ass-whipping he no doubt got was likely tempered by CJP’s full awareness that the play calling WAS in fact for shit. CMR is the type of guy to have his coach’s back even if he didn’t like how it was handled. How do you ask a guy to go into the trenches for you if you won’t have his back when he needs you?

Its never pleasant to to have the roof of the sausage making plant opened up for the world to see. All we can hope for is that the product ends up tasting a lot like victory. Nothing to see here really. Some people have tender egos and others need hits and many are just total fucking assholes. What’s new?

    • The unpleasantness didn’t start with the IPF.

McGarity confessed to Emerson that he didn’t understand why people think his PR skills are subpar. I believe him. So, knowing that, why talk to Bradley?

I don’t think this deserved to be taken with a grain of salt, because I’m not sure we’d be seeing a resolution yet if B-M wasn’t made aware that people were very unhappy with the dirty laundry being aired in public. YMMV, of course.

Dead wrong Derek, we may not have beaten Alabama but we had an excellent chance to do so. They had problems on offense, more serious on defense, and even bigger issues on STs. I think we do take them down, but would say it wasn’t any more than a 60% chance so I wouldn’t say you were out of your mind for thinking they would win, but you are out of your mind if you don’t think UGA had a decent chance. Either that or you didn’t see them play much and are just going off the FBomb callers.

They lost to Ole Miss and ohio, they scored 13 and 14 points against LSU and Arky respectively, and gave up 44 to Auburn. Exactly what intimidates you about that performance? Not saying they weren’t good but in case you didn’t notice, we were too. Yes, I would have bet that game with no points asked.

      • I wouldn’t bet against us against the Green Bay Packers. If the game were cancelled, I’d tell you afterwards that we’d get killed. You can’t connect other results to having meaning in a fictional bama vs UGA match up. The problem was that the match up would be very unfavorable for us. As far as weak special teams bama’s punter looked pretty damn good to me. Bama eats up mediocre qbs. You have to have a guy who can extend with his feet and a guy who can throw it deep. Find the rag arm, slow footed qb who has beaten Bama since 2008. The qb’s that have won threw it vertically and/or were a threat with their feet.

          Like

          • Derek

Uh.. no you can’t. In 2011 Lee was pulled for his poor performance in the November game against Alabama. Lee finished the game 3 of 7 (43%) for 24 yards with 2 interceptions and a passer rating of 14.5. Lee was 2 of 2 for 19 yards when Jefferson was briefly substituted for Lee to pick up a third and one on the fifth play of the game. Following a Lee interception which led to a blocked Alabama field goal attempt, Jefferson came in for Lee again, played the rest of the first half, and started the second half. Lee was given another chance in the second half but immediately threw his second interception of the game which led to an Alabama field goal.

LSU won 9-6 (not a likely outcome vs. us BTW and he didn’t win the game.)

And by the way, your original question asked who had beaten Bama since 2008. Technically, Lee played significant time in both games resulting in wins. So I was right twice.

                  Like

                • Derek

No you are wrong twice. When you get pulled you, by definition, didn’t win. Pretty basic. The proposition was: “Find the rag arm, slow footed qb who has beaten Bama since 2008.” Here are the stats for 2010:

                  J. Jefferson 10/13 141 10.8 1 0 58.8
                  J. Lee 4/7 67 9.6 0 0 22.1

Jefferson won those games, not Lee. Jefferson was athletic and strong armed as I recall. Now if you want to propose that a rag arm sloth can take one or more snaps vs. Bama and not fuck it up irrevocably then sure. Your non-point is well taken. Hutson could have taken a snap and not cost us the game provided he was replaced, soon. Maybe that’s right. We wouldn’t have won with Hutson going the distance though.

                  Like

                • You’re blaming me because you didn’t phrase your question properly.

I answered your original question correctly. Lee played quite a bit in both games. And while he may not have played well, he didn’t lose either game. Therefore, based on your original question, I was correct…twice.

You made one point that I agree with, the Bama punter was a weapon no doubt. But their FG kicker and return game sucked, all in all, an edge to UGA. And my points weren’t to say me, or you, can project the results of a hypothetical game but to say there was mucho evidence to say they were flawed, and vulnerable. UGA was a larger threat offensively than ohio, their defense was better but the Bama offense offered an average threat, imo. I will stick by my prediction but recognize there is room for disagreement. Sadly, we will never know but I am surprised anyone would think it was a slam dunk either way.

I get the feeling McGarity is at “put up or shut up” time with Richt. He appears to be giving him what he wants and taking the excuses away from Richt and his disciples. If Richt can’t produce a championship of some sort in the next couple of years and continues to crap the bed a few times a season, McGarity can fire him and not have to listen to the whining from the coach lovers that he didn’t “support” the program.

Assuming McGarity has the actual juice to change coaches, on his own, if Mark Richt does not produce the national championship…or a shot at it at least, that everybody in the building wants…everybody, Richt’s job should be on the line. I see nothing new in this. The problem for Richt, and thus, McGarity, is that this national championship will have to be won with Georgia’s rules…and unless there has been a sea-change in institutional attitude, beyond money for coaches, Mark Richt has a tough row to hoe.

          But he knows that.

I agree on the time to produce. Don’t forget what it will take (you know.. the COST) to get a whole new staff in Athens if they fire Richt. If McGarity was leaning toward that, there wouldn’t be an extension in the works. BM will milk this regime for every last dollar it can, and avoid an expensive buyout, if it can.
