We may all now have the peace of mind, that the only argument against firing Richt has been put to rest. McGarity is more than qualified and most assuredly able to fire Richt and subsequently hire an immediate NC winning coach.

NFL-pedigree seemed to work okay as a sales pitch for Grantham, but it was blown away compared to that what Pruitt has doen with having existing relationships.

Remember that time when Saban went to the NFL and dominated?
It isn’t about NFL stats or resume…it’s about whether the man can coach. And you don’t stay employed for that long under guys like Vermeil, Mangini, Ryan, and Fisher and you don’t get in the final two for NFL HC jobs if you can’t coach.
Does that mean he’ll be successful? No guarantees…but just because you are talking NFL, doesn’t mean it is the same thing as Grantham.

You can’t evaluate a coach in the NFL only on stats. The guy had no personnel to work with in NY or in STL. He had Bradford playing at a Pro Bowl level for a season and half when he was healthy, Plus…you try running an offense with no talent or QB out against Seattle and San Fran four times a season and see how your numbers are.

You mean the same Tavon Austin who can’t play tradtional WR in the NFL and had knee and back issues all season limiting his explosiveness?
Austin had 92 touches in 2014 compared to 78 in 2013. He averaged 3 yards fewer per catch, 10 yards fewer per run, and 13 yards fewer per kick return. He was up 3 yards per punt return.
You think that is scheme, play calling, health, or lack of personnel around him (see, Bradford, Sam). I’ll take the latter two, thanks.

The Jets were terrible on offense after he left. He did a lot in NY, considering he had Chad Pennington, Kelly Clemens, un-retired Favre, and Sanchez as his QB’s. He took Sanchez to two AFC title games. Look as his QB situtation in St. Louis. Its QB driven league and all he had were backups, with Bradford always hurt.

Interesting hire. He checks many boxes NFL and QB coaching experience. At the surface he looks to have been a success at the Jets but struggled at the Rams. Looking forward to reading more.
I didn’t expect a coach to bring innovative schemes but if he can coach QBs to execute and call a good game, he should win.

I will say the Jets were really good running the ball, even with the liability of Sanchez at QB while he was there, and that was against NFL defenses.

No, I am with Denver on this, someone in the past 10 days GATA and said enough looking up to our SEC brethren when it comes to commitment to staff and facilities. Everything since the bowl game and “the interview, part 2” points to a significant shift.

He was Jets OC for 6 seasons (2006-2011) under both Mangini and Rex Ryan. The Jets offense declined significantly the year after he left. Shottenheimer did a good job with the Jets. He was been unfortunate in that he had the following starting QB’s in NY: Chad Pennington, Kelly Clemens, Brett Favre, and Mark Sanchez (and even worse QBs in St. Louis). The Jets offense was ranked 13th in scoring each of his final two seasons despite having Sanchez starting as a rookie. The year the Jets had 39 year old Favre, the Jets finished 9th in offense. Looks like a great hire.

The Rams and Jets had terrible offensive personnel, which is why the offenses weren’t good. Mark Sanchez is terrible, and the Rams lost Sam Bradford early this season. Imagine what the Falcon’s offense would have looked like without Matt Ryan.

Luckily, Twitter responses to the hire don’t mean shit. I don’t see where anyone brought in would significantly change the offensive philosophy under Richt. His name and NFL experience will probably sell to recruits. He’s coached QB’s and he played the position. I don’t see any real negatives regardless of the opines of the Twitter experts.

My observation would be that CBS might regard this as the best offensive unit he has had to work with. When you think about what we do on offense, it appears to be a good hire. I hope that Jacob Eason shortly reaffirms his commitment to UGA for 2016. I wanted a pro-style guy but didn’t think Richt would be able to reach into the NFL especially for a coordinator. I figured if it was going to be an NFL guy, it was going to be a QB coach ready to become a coordinator.

In nine years as an OC, his offenses have never finished above 20th. But no, I’m sure that NFL teams don’t give out jobs based on a coach’s last name. I’m sure that Mike Shula got the OC position in Carolina based on his long track record of success on the college and pro levels.
If the NFL doesn’t recycle coaches, then explain how seven of the 16 coaches on this list got multiple head coaching gigs after they failed in their first.

Interesting pick. He has 9 years of offensive coordinator experience in the NFL. That’s pretty impressive. Even though the opinions of him around the league are mixed, it’s still almost a decade of coordinator experience there.
But, like everything, we’ll see how it works out. I’m somewhat optimistic about it though.

Agreed that recruiting is incredibly important, but he has no ties to Georgia high school coaches and hasn’t recruited a high school player in 14 years. I hope he can do it, but his ability to recruit is a complete unknown.

The fact that McLendon, Ball, and Lilly will still be on staff helps on the recruiting front. I also think the OL hire will likely be from the college ranks for this reason.

Not too many come with those connections AND are also qualified for the job. He’s gotta go do the work himself. Just because he’s got the pedigree does not mean we’ll get the results. The fact that he works with QB’s, has an NFL pedigree and loves to run the ball is the foundation. Now comes the hard part.

Philosophy: The offense St. Louis will run has roots in the Don Coryell digit system, though Schottenheimer said his offense would be more concept-based than reliant upon actual numbers. Schottenheimer learned the game from his famous father, Marty, but he initially thought he would fall under the West Coast tree. He pointed to Mike McCarthy, Jimmy Raye and Steve Spurrier as coaches he had borrowed from over the years. He learned the Coryell-based offense from Jerry Rhome in St. Louis during the 1997 season, when Dick Vermeil was coach. Schottenheimer said he likes the way “the formations flow” and the flexibility afforded coaches on game days.

Its pretty complicated offense, especially the terminology. I’m worried college kids won’t master it enough is such a short time to be efficient. LSU finished dead last in passing this year in the SEC. Thus system is tough and demanding on the QB, but it does prepare them for the NFL.

The terminology with a Coryell system is actually more simplified in regards to communicating which routes/route tree are called and assigned to X Y and Z recievers. West coast offenses are heavy in terminology, much longer learning curve regarding terminology. That, generally, is not the case with a Coryell system. It’s is built on vertical passing primarily and the use of packaged plays and concepts, the qb has to know his reads and make his adjustments in the heat of the moment and pre-snap reads are essential.
The running game, well… Bloomgren was his o-line run game coordinator with the Jets. That hire isn’t happening here, but it serves as an example of Schott utilizing a power run game. Best of both worlds IMO.

Coryell started at Whittier College and moved on to San Diego State before going pro. His system started as a college system and it will still work as a college system.

Schottenheimer tutored Brees and Rivers in San Diego. I imagine that was very appealing to Richt since he wanted to kill two birds (OC and QB coach) with one stone with this hire.
I kind of have mixed feelings, but I don’t think the offensive coordinator is as pivotal to the program’s success as the defensive coordinator. It’s still Richt’s offense. We just have to hope Schottenheimer demonstrates a knack for dialing up the right play at the right time.

First, UGA gets a DC from the BCS champion to make a lateral move. Then arguably the best S&C coach applies for a job. Now, an NFL OC (who has interviewed for two head coaching jobs, and who took MARK SANCHEZ to two straight AFC Championship games) makes a lateral move. Despite their faults, B-M and Richt must be doing a lot right.
This should solidify the 2015 recruiting class. If he can recruit a lick, this could turn out to be a great hire.

Great hire, though I’m not surprised by some of the bellyaching that’s taking place around here. I swear, UGA could have hired Chip Kelly as OC at 7 mil a year, yet people still would have found something to complain about (e.g. “his offense is too gimmicky for my taste”)
The way some of you constantly complain about something totally out of your control, you must live an absolutely perfect life with no self-improvement needed. I’m talking a multi-million dollar lakefront home, 6 pack abs, a hot as hell wife, and a private jet aircraft readily available to scoot you away depending on your whimsical desires.

I am hardly a bellyacher, more a disney dawg usually, to be honest. However, I remain moderately disappointed in the hire. To me, this is the antithesis of the Pruitt hire, which I was (and remain) ecstatic about. You take a guy with no history with the program, long removed from college, and ask him to change what he’s been doing for 14 years – take on new recruiting responsibilities, develop (not refine) rudimentary offensive skills, and simplify scheme. It feels to me like the Grantham hire but on the other side of the ball.
I’m sure there are some great examples of long-time nfl coordinators dropping down to college and succeeding, but I am just having a hard time identifying them. I’m sure there are others on here who can enlighten me, which I would honestly welcome.

For those interested, The St. Louis Rams’ current OL coach is former Atlanta Falcons coach Paul Boudreau. Given the long time he’s been in the NFL, I am not sure he will be the guy.

I think I like it, mostly because it continues what has been the Offensive philosophy at UGa since CMR arrived in 2001. These kinds of hires with the schemes that come with them lay out a fairly believable path for recruits aiming for the League. Though it is also this affinity with the NFL that is not exactly rustling the jimmies.
There is still Sp.Teams to fret about, so all our worries aren’t over.

Will Schottenheimer learn Richt’s playbook and terminology or bring his own. My thinking is it will be a lot harder for all the players to learn a new system than one coach.

At least this hire can have immediate impact coaching our 3 young QBs. Adjusting to our offense is going to be simple for him. If he helps keep Eason on-board for 2016, that’s a bonus. And if he has clock management abilities, this will be a home run hire.

From what I am reading, this sounds like a spectacular hire.
Of course that doesn’t automatically mean it will turn out brilliantly, but that’s life.

have watched the Rams for the last three years due to a family connection.. If you love dink and dunk, Shotty’s your man…dig a little deeper and check out his offenses’s yard per catch…always bottom of the league, even when Bradford was healthy….ya’ll will be calling for his head in 10 months time…but I do hope it will work out and I’m proven very wrong,,,GO DAWGS

I love Dawg fans. Ready, shoot, aim. CBS hire is now scary because our last NFL savior couldn’t keep it simple. We run a Pro offense so CMR hires a pro OC. But but he can’t recruit. Eason’s dad is already approved so rest easy we remain an NFL feeder school. I’m more worried about the Oline coach.
