Deep in the heart of Second Chance country…

UPDATE: Please join me for a laugh. Per Alabama spokesperson Deborah Lane,
“Jonathan Taylor was admitted to The University of Alabama following the same procedures that the UA Admissions office uses to evaluate any student who has dealt with legal issues. The admissions process includes representatives from academic, legal, student affairs, student conduct, UAPD and counseling. Athletics is not involved in the admissions process. Taylor’s continued enrollment depends on his ability to fulfill all requirements the University has specifically mandated for him during his time as a UA student.”
“Athletics is not involved in the admissions process.”? Girl, we’re talking Alabama here. About how many other enrollees have you had to make statements like that?
That quote – it’s all just made up and flagellant.
Another example of the The Georgia Way.

In this case, its a good thing. UGA is an institution of higher learning first and foremost, and is consistently ranked among the top 20 public universities in the country. AU and Bama, meanwhile, are well known football factories that aren’t exactly hailed for their academic and ethical rigor.
As a UGA alum, I’m proud to see that we have certain values that we steadfastly adhere to, while others unabashedly pursue football success; academic reputations be damned.

As a UGA alum, I am proud you are proud. I just hope you continue to be proud when we lose to one of these football factories. I can tell you from long experience, pride in your school is a wonderful thing, but not always the easiest thing.

I care more about UGA’s academic ranking than its football one, so the losses don’t bother me nearly as much as the average fan. Besides, and this is the key point—I have absolutely no effect on UGA football whatsoever, and UGA football has no meaningful effect on my life. Therefore, I treat it as a casual entertainment vehicle only and certainly don’t get all wrapped up into it.

I must apologize for getting wrapped up in both, with academics trumping all endeavors with the UGA label on it. Our name is renowned in academic and business circles. If we looked as closely at the defining accolades paid our school in all fields as we did to cfb minutiae, our pride would swell well beyond all TDs.

Reputation and rankings wise, we aren’t as different from Alabama as you think. Georgia is #62 on the US News rankings of national universities. Alabama is #88. They are 26 spots behind us. Move up 26 spots on the list from us to #36 and you still haven’t got to Georgia Tech at #35. We’re closer to Alabama on these rankings than we are GT.
Other big public football schools that are even or higher than us in the rankings:
I think, in general, our fanbase needs a serious reality check regarding what they think we are.

What the fan base thinks we are is irrelevant, what the administration wants us to be, the Harvard of the South is something else again. Does the North Carolina ranking consider the current ….er…academic/athletic problems?

Except that it’s not irrelevant. Our fanbase is constantly standing on our self righteous soapbox telling the world (and ourselves) what a great school we are and that the schools that win have poor academic reputations. It’s pathetic. We’re not even close to being what we tell the world we are.

“We’re not even close to being what we tell the world we are.” Who is WE, Andy? I have never said we were anything other than a state university trying not to be a football factory, trying to do things the right way with rules we expect athletes to follow….Florida, home of Aaron Hernandez is on your list, as is Penn State, Andy….not sure what your point is, are you?
If you don’t see and understand that Georgia is a better school academically than it was even 20 years ago, I wonder what your vision is like.
North Carolina is on your list…do the people who do the list concern themselves with horrendous academic violations by the athletic program?

Alabama’s (#2) APR score is higher than Vandys. That gave me pause. Do ya think it might be part of some process? Georgia tied with Florida. UT didn’t make a passing grade. Yikes.

SAT scores are on top of 4.0 at Georgia. My youngest scored the highest SAT score at his HS and graduated with honors. Honors program at Georgia and at Georgia law now. He has confided in me that he isn’t the smartest guy in the room and he has to work his butt off to compete. Plenty of smart kids to go around at all schools. Georgia just doesn’t cater to athletes nearly as much as some other schools and that is what you have apparently missed. Georgia is just not as flexible as other programs. But you should know that if you are a fan. Shouldn’t you?

Just shows how totally out of control Mark Richt and the Ga football program really are. I can’t believe Richt and the administration would let these kinds of thugs in school in the first place. Time to make a change and it starts with the HC.
Kudos for Auburn and Alabama for giving these kids a second chance though. Can’t believe Georgia acted so hastily. These are good kids who just made a mistake.

I’m pretty disgusted by Taylor’s resurgence. The check-cashing scam was bad, but allegedly beating and choking a woman should get you sent out of football forever. His actions demonstrate he’s a person of very low integrity, and it’s shameful that any SEC school would bring him in, much less engage in a recruiting battle over him.
This isn’t a second chance, it’s a third chance and it’s not deserved. I’m a bleeding heart liberal apologist, and this kid should spend time in jail, not on a playoff-caliber team getting fast-tracked to the NFL.

Totally get your point, and you ain’t wrong. But gotta do something to keep our sanity. The circular logic of us having a discipline problem because we discipline our players is enough to drive you mad. Jalen Hurd gets busted for underage drinking in a car, with a confiscated weapon involved, and it barely registers a blip on the radar because of no missed playing time. Meanwhile, if Chubb had done the exact same thing, he’d have been sitting out the bowl game, and everyone outside the program would have been howling again about UGA’s discipline problem. Frustrating. (I know I’m preaching to the choir).

So you think we (UGA) should keep a convicted woman beater on the team? Look, I agree that our drug policies are ridiculous but this is a whole different category of offense.

No. I’m simply sick and tired of our fanbase hanging our hat on our self righteousness (and borderline obsessing over it) while the other big boys win conference championships.
I also think we come off looking like a bunch of weaklings and ignorant fools when we stand on our soapbox and act like we’re Stanford, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Virginia, etc. We’re not.

But the theme of the tweet and the blog post isn’t just about this one guy. It’s about the # we’ve kicked out that they’ve taken in. We’ve been getting up on our soapbox constantly for years now b/c we never get to get up on the victory stand.
And again, we ain’t Stanford, Vandy, Northwestern, or Virginia. Nor are we even close.

The fact of the matter is that we’re closer to Alabama in reputation, academic prestige, and how we treat athletes than we are to Stanford, Vandy, Northwestern, or Virginia. I know you don’t like it to be that way…but it be that way.
As for your attempt to mock US News while using Forbes as your guide, ask people in the academic world which one garners more respect.

I know some folks in the academic world, three of them came from Alabama to Georgia because they were tired of the pro-football attitude of the administration and viewed Georgia as a more welcoming environment….sorry they don’t much care what a former news magazine says about that environment.
There was no attempt to mock the web site of the former news magazine known as U.S. News and World Report…I was mocking it….I don’t read their lists of best new shoes to buy either.

I think the answer to your question AHD is stupid, or simply very confused, The guy cannot even differentiate academics from disciplinary policies. If he thinks UGA is something below other schools when it comes to playing games with disciplinary action he has been Rip Van Winkled somewhere for a long, long time. Not even worth the argument because he doesn’t understand the subject much less have the ability to compare schools. Astounding how many of our fans don’t understand this, not saying he is, I don’t know, but they certainly lose sight of it when attempting to justify their positions.

I see. So if athletics aren’t involved in the admissions process, then you’re essentially saying that a 2.5 gpa student with average at best SAT scores and a history of domestic violence qualifies for admittance into UA on such merit alone.
Ironically enough, Kirby Smart continues to espouse that UA is just as good of an academic institution as UGA to recruits and their families. Talk about a lack of conscience.
