The war’s over, man.

Georgia suddenly has openings for five – count ’em, five – new support positions, two offensive quality control coordinators, two defensive quality control coordinators and a special teams analyst.

If you needed proof that something’s gotten into the water at Butts-Mehre, there you go.

what do the quality control folks do, exactly?

    • It’s at the link. Here’s a sample from one:

The Athletics Quality Control Coordinator is a support position for coaches. This position will breakdown film using XO’s for viewing by coaches and players. Analyze data including the charting of tendencies by opponents, run reports using XO’s, assist in preparing game plans and call sheets, and creating and updating Goal Boards. The incumbent should possess self-scouting tendencies and have a thorough knowledge of computer programs and software. This position will also assist with on-campus recruiting and will ensure adherence with all NCAA, SEC, UGA, and UGAAA rules and regulations. Position will have a primary focus such as offense or defense.

Look at it as additional staff to handle the more mundane chores so the highly paid/place coaches can focus on bigger decisions. Very much like any decent sized corporation would have. Let the new staff guys bring edited film of future opponents to the coordinators and position coaches to focus their time on the selected highlights, no need for them to be watching Auburn game film when we are preparing for Florida, or start from scratch every game week to find relevant tendencies/formations, etc. I thought it was smart of Saban at the time but felt the NCAA would not allow it due to the limit on “coaches” on staff. This effectively circumvents it, glad we are attempting to level the field a little.

I like seeing the “self-scouting” bit in there too, so hopefully we don’t wind up with situations like 2009 where Cox’s foot placement was telegraphing run or pass.

Good point, we also had a guard that tipped the snap count. Self-scouting is a great idea to reveal tendencies and vulnerabilities, one of the luxuries a coaching staff often cannot afford during a season.

Great news, very encouraging. That being said, as is the trend, this change of philosophy is about 3-5 years late in being implemented.

Did McGarity have to fully surrender or is there just a peace accord in place?

Senator how much of this change comes from Pruitt getting into Richt’s ear about Sabanizing UGA?

  7. Or is this the point where ADGM tells us, “Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?”

(McGarity): “What?!? Over?!? Nothing is over until we decide it is!! Was it over when Kent State defeated Oregon? Hell no!!

      (Moorhead): “Kent State?”

      (Richt): “Forget it. He’s rolling.”

Damn. Just damn. Here we go. Now I’m already getting excited. G Day game can’t get here fast enough. I suspect though, that for whatever reason, this is likely some sort of “we gave you everything you asked for so now let’s see some results” scenario. Especially after McGarity’s very public “we pay for results” remarks. I don’t know if the motivation came from the new president, Richt, Pruitt or if the powers that be were suddenly feeling repentant about their frugal ways. Perhaps they were shocked that Bobo actually left and that was enough to wake the bear. Who knows. Certainly not me. But it’s time to put up or shut up so that in and of itself makes the upcoming season something to look forward to. And Alabama is in Athens this year.

I mentioned a few days ago there would be more changes. These are part of them. Thanks for your fine work Senator

So how many we got? I mean, these are in addition to the guys already there?

We already had 3 on offense, 1 on defense, 1 on SPT. 5 overall.

Alex Jackson (Offense) is gone I hear. Richt (offense) was a volunteer, not sure if he’ll stick around.

So just 3 overall, plus 5 more. So we have 8 support staffers.

Alabama has 24. What that small army does, I don’t know.

Better late than never. This excites me, the ST analyst is so long over due its damn near criminal. Now maybe we can be the proactive member of the SEC who lossens our Weed usage policy.

Finally. Now let’s do something about the ticky tacky weed and beer policies.

While I welcome the changes and think they will increase our chances of success, a part of me feels like this is just McFrugal giving Richt all the rope he needs.

McFrugal as you call him did nothing but follow instructions to get on the wagon.

Yup, get on board because this train is moving forward. He may not have liked it but he is the one who put himself into position to look silly when the “intervention” reversed his “way too public” positions.

It’s a welcome and much over due change. The coaches need to be coaching and recruiting. This frees them up from the other seasonal time consuming tasks. What I really like is it gives us positions that can be filled by really good Graduate Assistants or great high school coaches that want to move up college coaching. We can literally grow our own so to speak.

On the matter of the weed policy, that’s not going to change. We have been too self-righteous for too long to stop now. The best we can hope for is that we can get the SEC to rule that if you are dismissed from a member institution for disciplinary reasons you are ineligible to play for any other SEC schools. I know that will never happen since everybody but us gives 4 and 5 chances but hey in a perfect world…. Okay so I still believe in Unicorns.

    • I had had a similar thought about GA’s, would love to see Christian Robinson get one of these new positions. Isn’t this the end of his 2nd year as a GA? And aren’t you only allowed to be a GA for two years? He seems like an asset and a guy who will be a great coach and recruiter down the line. Would be nice to keep him in the fold until he’s ready for a coaching position. Same thing with Inman.

I remember macgarity interview a few years ago when he was asking the NCAA to limit these type positions. He was quoted as saying these positions found not “break down film”. The Uga posting lists film analysis as one of the job duties. Did something change or was macgarity wrong ?

Gotta be pleased with the new year. Eight early enrollees started this month, only 1 loss to nfl early entry, new assistant coach hires weren’t a fiasco, new support staff, increased pay to retain good assistants, etc., etc. Almost all the news has been good.

Looking ahead: this recruiting class will be excellent, and have great numbers. And IPF moving forward. If we can keep attrition to a minimum, this may be the best off season UGA has had for quite some time.

…and if we take care of discipline on the practice field, in the weight room, and not in the papers, it certainly will be the best Georgia off-season in recent memory.

I don’t have an inside source, but looking in from the outside, it appears that the UGA “deep state” was fed up with how things were being run. The salaries and position additions tell me business as usual would no longer be tolerated. Bobo leaving may or may not have been the wake up call. ADGM leash got yanked real hard. He is performing his best heel maneuver. It wouldn’t shock me to see more positive changes headed this way.
