Early feedback on S&C

Interesting quote from OLman target Nick Buchanan on what he saw on his trip to Athens that stuck with him:

“My favorite part was probably the weight-room presentation that (strength coach Mark Hocke) did.

“That was pretty nice. He came in and he had a whole bunch of energy. He really gets you amped up to work out. With Coach Hocke, every thing is a competition. It’s going to be hard work, but he really brings out the best in you.”

Sure, that’s from a kid who’s not actually in the program.  But when’s the last time you heard any recruit speak favorably about what he saw from the strength and conditioning staff?  For that matter, how often have you heard about Georgia showing off its S&C staff to recruits?

I wonder if Hocke is the unnamed source who called mat drills “insane?”

Probably. If you have been doing something for years that no other program emulates, there is a good chance that it isn’t working.

I always thought mat drills were a good team building and mental toughness building program. What was this insiders specific gripe with them?

  3. Dumb question, and I’m sure this has likely been discussed already and I missed it. How is Hocke’s name pronounced? Is it “hockey”, “hock”, or “hoke”?

They have always presented the S & C staff on every recruiting visit. There was a lot of positive reaction a few years ago when they brought the MMA stuff in as well. Joe T. actually did a really good job on the visits when we were there. All that said, it was time for a new approach, so if Hocke is getting positive reactions already I’ll take it as a good sign.

they get enthusiastic enough to workout seriously during the summer. Exactly what is the permissible NCAA summer workout that staff can give?

UGA: Come for the s&c, stay for co-eds!

  7. Too bad the kid seemed very unimpressed about the rest of his visit. Or that’s the way he came across to me.

24 committed D1 offensive linemen in the state and we have a commitment from 1? WTH?
