Musical palate cleanser, she’s got a dog that won’t bite edition

I saw Delbert McClinton last night.  It’s the best show I’ve ever seen a 74-year old man put on.  It’s always a pleasure to watch a guy who loves to perform and connect with his audience.  He and his band definitely didn’t mail in a single note.

I don’t know if you’ve had the pleasure of listening to his stuff before.  He works around the area where honky-tonk and R & B converge and he’s got a voice that’s made in America.  He’s been at it for decades, so needless to say he’s got as rich a song catalog as anyone out there.

Here’s a taste.  It’s the song he closed with last night and it’s one of my favorites, the slightly Stones-y “Every Time I Roll The Dice”.  Enjoy.

  2. Been awhile. But yeah I enjoyed his stuff. I had a couple of his CD’s once. I picked up one in the late 90’s? I remember it had this song on it and I thought it was good enough to learn and play on a Conn Classical. That Conn has long since vanished along with most of my guitars. I think my nephew has it.

  3. I had to look to see where Bluto saw Delbert. That show was at Variety Playhouse in Little 5 Points. I did some lofts for the Early Corp. on Krog Street. That building is a lot like out Georgia Theater and a great place to spend an evening. There was an artist in the early 80’s that painted older theaters in a photorealistic style. He painted that one. Lotta artists paint those buildings.

  5. I now have what is normally referred to as a shit eating grin on my face . I don’t know whether to thank you or be pissed. My wife thinks I’m up to something…..the response of but “she has a dawg that don’t bite” did not seem to placate her. Thanks away it ain’t your fault. I blame Bobo.

Good selection, Senator. Delbert does a number of covers that are actually better than the originals, IMO. “Can I Change My Mind” is one that comes to my mind. Seventy-four and still kickin’ butt! Ooorah!

Posted video is from Austin City Limits, a terrific venue and worth a pilgrimage to the “Live Music Capital of the World”. Saw the Jimi Hendrix revue there a couple of months ago that’s been touring with a star-studded line-up of blues guitarists…one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. Buddy Guy blew us all away.

Thanks, AHD. Of all of Delbert’s great music, When Rita Leaves, is my absolute favorite. Being a contemperary…in age, not talent…I was amazed to hear he was still on the circuit. Have to find out his schedule somehow. Kudos to the Senator for giving us this great selection…and AHD!

Jim Quick & Coastline, from eastern North Carolina, used to do a great rendition of “Rollin a 7”
