Short stuff

Seth Emerson has a valid point in his review of the receivers/tight ends group.

That’s something that’s missing for Georgia now with Chris Conley, Michael Bennett and Jonathon Rumph gone from the scene. And it’s why I think Williams (a bulky 6-foot-1) and Towns (a legit 6-3) will see the field a lot. It could also lead to walk-ons Hegedus (6-2) and Johnson (6-1) getting a hard look.

Mitchell is great, but not what you’d call tall.  Neither is Scott-Wesley.  Davis and McKenzie?  Yeah, right.  Terry Godwin, whom I expect to see a lot of on offense this season, is well under six feet, too.

Somebody with some height has to get a shot, because there are situations where you have to have a taller receiver (not just a tight end) as a target option.

Who’s your candidate for being that guy (or guys)?

  1. Jayson Stanley has that big body with speed that could be that type of player. Whatever happened to Lonnie Outlaw? 🙂

If Mitchell and JSW are healthy, we’ll have 2 deep threat playmakers.

I asked him to clarify on Twitter, but isn’t Hegedus on scholly? I was sure he was a regular transfer from NC St.

Whoever it is will have a different coach. Reports are confirming Ball to LSU.

The tall. lanky receivers are my primary concern about TN this year but the major advantage to having tall receivers is in the red zone on fades and jump balls. And even then it requires a QB that can exploit the 5-6 inch advantage by being accurate enough to put the ball in that exact spot. I do wonder why we have had so few tall WRs over the 50+ years I have watched UGA football though. Get the ball to Isaiah, Michel, JSW, etc., in space enough though and I will be happy with them dancing their way to the end zone.

I think the new OC will make us surprised with the way he is going to use the TE’s. Senator you referenced an article analyzing his formations and play calling at St. Louis and he ran a lot of 2 TEs. The play action to Chubb has got to free the TE. The problem in the past was with few exceptions Bobo always had the TE’s as the 3rd or 4th option and that limited their touches. I think based on his time in the NFL the new OC will feature the TEs more as the first option.

Spot on. Was going down the posts ready to ask what happened to two great TEs with experience and two more recruits who are up there.

Why fuss over height when you only consider the WRs? Duh!

We haven’t recruited an solid receiver since 2011 and haven’t produced an elite receiver since AJ (maybe mitchell changes that in next year’s draft) Ouch.really hope Terry Godwin can be that guy.

Maybe its just me, but when watching Scott-Wesley I frequently mistake him for a TE. Seems much bigger than a typical WR.

Getting back to WR height, I don’t recall us exploiting height advantages very much over the years. Even when we had AJ and Pope we didn’t use them considerably different than shorter WRs/TEs. Rome and Rumph were tall on 2014’s team, yet rarely got in the game when we could’ve used their height advantage. Yes, I’d like to see us use a height advantage, but there’s not much history of that with CMR’s teams.

Reggie Brown was 6’1″ and Massoquai was 6’2…TK was 6’1″. Mitchell is a solid 6’1″…always had reminded me of Reggie Brown but seems longer. If you had told me Mitchell was 6’3″…I wouldn’t have doubted it. 2012 the top two receivers were King and Mitchell…the passing offense was pretty good that year.

Anyway…when you start talking about a guy that is 5’11 and a guy that is 6’2″…standing reach/arm length, vertical jump…those things become difference makers to the point where you give a guy like AJ Green a huge advantage or maybe you make a guy like Reggie Brown play more like a 6’4″ player.

I think it’s fair to say that there is no Marlon Brown or Bennett in this group. But sleeper is Gary McRae…6’4″ and a true athlete…247 said he could get a shot at WR.
