‘Cocks clearing space

South Carolina, what in the wide, wide world of sports is going on?

Linebacker Marcquis Roberts will not be back with the South Carolina football team and is expected to transfer, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Roberts is the 10th scholarship player to leave the Gamecocks since the end of the 2014 season.

One of those is Mike Davis, who’s going pro, so that’s no big deal, but some of those others, like Roberts, who started six games last season, played.

Is there that much dead wood in Columbia the OBC needs to toss?  Or is there something else happening?

UPDATE:  Roster management.

I guess that’s part of what the NCAA means when you commit to a school, not the coach.

UPDATE #2:  Still goin’.

“…dead wood…” when discussing Spurrier and the ‘Cocks.

I see what you did there. 🙂

  2. He’s had knee and shoulder surgery.
Roberts had labrum surgery and was expected to miss spring practice. He redshirted twice at USC and has two seasons of eligibility remaining

Thanks for the info. You are becoming a “source” here with the quick look-ups.

As usual, I don’t get it. Where is he going that would make a difference in his presence on the playing field? He just started 6 and was in 13 games last year. Inconsistencies many say. Ok, train him up. Must be something else with him. They have had 12 to leave the team including 3 walk-ons and Davis headed for the NFL. Shaq Roland? Gone. Wow! Four on D and five on O. Thought earlier it had to do with Ware, but not so. New coaches letting them know that they won’t make it when the new class comes in? Maybe.

Instead of UGA losing “the usual” before the game, Spurrier is doing it all at once, but if more leave, they could be in trouble – and that’s not all bad for us.

scu hasn’t been the same team since Shaw and Clowney left. They had a 3 year run and a pretty good nucleus of talent. They are solidly in the middle of the sece pack now.

7-6 season + embarrassing loss to their in-state rival + largest signing class in the SEC + new defensive coordinator + no “South Carolina Way” to obstruct their progress.

It should be no surprise that people are on the move.

Attrition anywhere has become a non-story to me because there’s so much of it. Just like anywhere else people get dissatisfied, sick, hurt, aggravated or just plain didn’t fit to begin with.

Senator, could this simply be a matter of Spurrier being fun to be around and being an insufferable asshole when they aren’t? Things there feel a lot more similiar to 2005-2009 than those couple of years he caught lightning in a bottle.

Team Chemistry might have been bad last year. Spurrier mentioned bad chemistry in past teams in a couple of interviews but nothing about this year specifically. I think he is culling out the bad apples.

Clearing space works for Alabama because they can easily get upgrades. I’m not sure it will work that way for South Carolina.

Hey–The ‘Cocks can just take Bama’s cast-offs and be way ahead. 🙂

Clearing space has already worked for South Carolina. With the exception of last season, their record has improved since they made the 2010 decision to sign more players and aggressively manage their roster.

They were the first SEC East school to adopt this strategy.
