Do nerds deserve a second chance?

My only question after reading this:  does Auburn have a computer engineering school?

I am okay with that if his community service involves cleaning toilets at Butts-Mehre. Or, maybe even better, one of the men’s dorms after a busy weekend.

The fact that his full name is printed in this article and I am sure in other GA papers will do plenty of damage. A future employer doing a simple background check will find this easily. What a dumbass move.

How about one of the conditions of his pretrial diversion is someone smacks the shit out of this immature little diaper stain? 90% of this society’s problems could be fixed with a corrective punch in the mouth.

  5. It wasn’t a smart move. But I don’t think it is a ‘wreck his life’ move either. It didn’t hurt anyone–not a bad prank if you ask me…especially considering the damage hacking often causes. UGA should have been bigger about it and asked for an apology and maybe some small amount of damages before prosecuting. Seems like a waste of the court’s time.

This^^. I did stuff a whole lot stupider when I was in college. It was a college prank for crying out loud!! As an aside, ask yourself: Did you have a phoney ID when you were in school to get into bars and buy booze? Guess what? If a kid has one now and gets caught, changes in the law have made this into a felony and kids can do serious jail time if the DA wants to be a prick about it. Everybody takes minor college BS way too seriously now. If some students from Georgia stole the North Carolina mascot (a goat) before the ’16 season opener there probably will be assholes who would want to prosecute them for felony theft by taking. Lighten up!!

If a lawyer does his research he can really embarrass a DA who indicts a fake ID for forgery(the felony your referring to) because buried in Title 3 (the alcohol provisions) is an obscure provision that provides that if the fake ID is for under aged purchase of alcohol it is only a misdemeanor. The DA who indicts a kid for forgery for possessing a fake ID is either young/inexperienced,a political hack or a douche but since those people exist ,you are right Mayor, it has happened.

he isn’t getting his life wrecked. He’s getting pretrial diversion, which means he does a token punishment detail, then his record is wiped clean.

Too bad one of the things they fail to teach at GTU is respect for other people’s stuff. Science nerds frequently only ask “Am I able to do this?” They should consider following that up with “SHOULD I do this?”

you do dumb shit, you sometimes have to pay the consequences. If this self important little nerd learned that it isn’t a good idea to hack into other people’s networks, UGA is doing him a big favor.

I agree Lamont. This just makes us look petty. Besides, he already lost nerd respect for getting caught.

My first thought was “Dang, now I really shouldn’t hack into the GT website before this year’s game in retaliation”

I hope someone frames the apology letter and puts it in the trophy case.

I know several STD’s (Stereotypical Tech Douches), and they have been crowing about this today saying he should have ended his apology with 30>24 or THWG.

Hacking into a university computer is a serious matter, but that’s the only thing that ruined his otherwise harmless and humorous prank. Since his hacking is a serious matter, I like that he had to go to court for it so that can be on his record should he ever do something like that again, but I also would not want him to suffer any serious punishment for what was most likely nothing more than a good-spirited college prank.

This seems like the most reasonable position. Let it go unless he does something similar again.

I doubt this will have any long-term implications on his life/career unless he’s a clueless doofus without any tact. I think most potential employers would chalk this up to “young and stupid” and not hold it against him assuming he’s forthcoming about it.

This won’t hurt him a bit. Great prank that didn’t hurt anyone. No employer will be wary. If anything it shows a good sense of humor and some skill.

Come on, give the kid a break. It was a rivalry stunt. As an UGA alumnus, I think that it was pretty funny. I mean, is this not what college football is about? It did not hurt anyone nor did he poison any trees. If this was a UGA kid that did this to Tech’s website, we all would be posting his bail.

During the real old days before winter grass on Sanford could be painted, some GT students with balls I might add, snuck into the stadium and planted rye grass. By the time the UGA Tech game rolled around the grass spelled “To Hell with Georgia”. I was young but I thought it was funny. It was sort of like the saying Tech had about “In Dodd we trust to beat Georgia’s Butts”. Now the geniuses in the AD name the damn building Butts-Mehre and so it naturally becomes butt smire to everybody. How about Mehre-Butts or Harry-Wally oh well. The colleges have gotten way too puritanical with the students, used to the campus cop would give you a ride back to the dorm if you were too drunk to walk. Long ago in good ole Athens.

  16. Yea, harmless prank. If this rates a felony charge and is so serious, what does that say about UGA’s network security? Was the UGA employee in charge of network security fired? My thoughts: 1- Tom Jackson is a pussy and should be fired. 2- People upset about what the kid did are acting like whiney GT students. 3- I must admit the dude can predict football games. 4- I am embarrassed that UGA made a big deal out of this.
