My, how things have changed.

I had to look twice to make sure, but, yep, ESPN ranks Georgia’s secondary second in the conference going into spring practice.

2. Georgia: After LSU, this unit was the SEC’s best in limiting opponents through the air (170.3 passing yards allowed per game). The good news for Jeremy Pruitt is that not only does he have quite a few options in the secondary, most of them have experience. Dominick Sanders, who shined as a freshman, returns; so do fellow safeties Quincy Mauger and Corey Moore, who started seven games and six games, respectively. All the cornerbacks on the two-deep return. With Damian Swann’s departure, a new leader needs to be established, but overall, this is a good group.

I’m not sure how much of that is a reflection of respect for Pruitt’s coaching and how much of it may be due to overall weakness in the conference in the defensive backfield, but in any event, it’s been a while since anybody’s suggested the Dawgs are at least an upper level team in that regard.

  2. Wasn’t last season Moore’s last year? Did I miss something?

That’s what I thought. He is not listed on the roster on georgiadogs.

Of course, if your run defense is such that Florida only throws the ball 6 times, your pass D numbers are going to be skewed.

Come on man. Can’t you admit that Pruitt exponentially improved our secondary even with a thin roster of young / inexperienced players and walk-ons? The guy can flat out coach.

I for one can’t wait to see what the defense can do in year 2 with a better / deeper roster of talent.

    • Appreciate the deep analytical insight there.

Although it doesn’t explain how Georgia finished second in the conference in defensive passer rating last season.

Relax. I know there are some feisty commenters, Senator, but I’m not one.

Of course it doesn’t, and I’m a huge Pruitt fan. But YPG was the stat used, not defensive passer rating. Florida threw 6 times. Tech had 64 yards passing. The only point I was attempting to make, albeit perhaps poorly, is that YPG is not a very good metric, especially for this team vis a vis who they played.

Georgia made a big jump from 9 to 2. Alabama’s drop from 2 to 11 was a surprise too. (CFBStats)

    • My concern is losing Swann is a lot like losing a center. How many times have you seen the other DB’s palms turned up (international symbol for what D are we in?) and Swann screaming trying to get them in the right D. I will freely admit this did not happen as much with Pruitt as DC but when it did the DB’s turn to Swann. I believe we have a lot of leaders to replace if it is going to be cohesive team on both sides of the ball. Losing a starting QB,starting center.starting linebacker( I believe Herrera called D signals ,I could be wrong) and clear leader of the DB’s is scary. I know the physical talent is there but the leadership void created by the departure of all these clear leaders,in addition to the ultimate DGD, Chris Connelly, and there is potential for a rudderless team. I do not mean this as a criticism of the coaches but you need player leaders just as much as Coach leaders and I hope someone can and will step up or I foresee problems.

      • Can’t find fault in anything you wrote. It’s pretty spot on. We’re fortunate that Floyd and Jenkins are back. I believe they can be leaders. Aron Davis has done nothing but impress me. 12 Starts! He’s been in the system 3 years now and has plenty of smarts. Hunter Long is inexperienced but this is his fourth year in the system. He is surrounded by juniors and seniors. Malcomb Mitchel may be in top form after his knee injury and has shown maturity. Rome is a senior. Ramsey will have seen the field more than anyone one else available at qb. He’s a redshirt soph. So he’s been in the O for a couple of years. Richt always seems to have a good qb. As much as fans poor mouth Cox he played his rear end off against Arkansas that year. I think something happened to his rotator cuff. And he forced things to try and make up for a Defense that was struggling at times. I dunno. We are coaching them better now? Part of teaching involves leadership preparation. So I’m going with the glass is half full. More Disney than Eeyore Dawg I guess. 😉

Our stellar D backfield will cause turmoil during G Day and we’ll never identify a starting QB!

It hasn’t been that long. They were second in the conference going into 2012, too.

So does this mean our “not to be named qb” Ramsey should have a respectable year vs conf opp??
