Summer means fun.

So much for settling things at the quarterback position soon.

Maybe I’m reading too much into that, but my first thought is that Ramsey isn’t the clear leader at #1 many people believe he is.

The book on him was he had a ton of raw talent, but transitioning from a veer/option offense in HS to UGA’s pro-style was always going to be a big leap.
Though if Park or Bauta were in spread offenses, it’s not like they were making tons of coverage reads either. Gonna be interesting.

It could be that Ramsey isn’t the clear leader. Or it could be that Schottenheimer wants more time to evaluate the candidates. Or it might be that they don’t want to encourage any transfers. Who knows? If I had to guess, I’d say #2 is the most likely reason.

Good to read even if there is a clear favorite, competition pushes player further. Hopefully Schott wants time to evaluate.

  4. There’s no reason to be in a hurry. Labeling it as an open competition gets the best out of everyone. Why have any of them relax either because they are or because they are not “the guy?” It could be a million to one in their minds that anyone beats out Ramsey but why say so?

For my own sanity, I’m just going to assume our offense will consist entirely of direct snaps to Chubb and Michel. That probably gets us to middle of the pack offensively, and any help from the QB is gravy.

I’m thinking a lot of Wild (or Mad) Dawg with those two and maybe some Faton occasionally, until Ramsey gets in the groove. And then used often in red-zone situations.

      • Richt runs a pro style offense. He just hired a new OC to run a pro style offense. He’s not going to switch to an option attack.

I really wasn’t think “option attack” per-say. The Wild Dawg is already in our package. We’ve used it in some situations and it seemed we were priming Michel for it before he got hurt. I was just thinking if we have QB problems, we may run the Wild Dawg more often and then take advantage of the extra blocker in the red zone.

Would be a fun wrinkle to torment opposing D-coordinators, making them use practice time to cover the bases.

UGA has plenty of talent at QB, and Bobo did an above average job of coaching up that talent. If anything Bobo was afraid to let the QBs make mistakes with new QBs. Mason did a very solid job when allowed to throw. I am not concerned about talent at QB, Bama has taken less talent at QB to the national title game. If Schott/Richt can come up with solid game plans, as well as adapt on the fly (center, QB, RB injuries, or just a good job by the opposing DC), this team can go far. The talent is there.

Yes I do like that the UGA offense is evolving into more Bama ’09 than UGA with Stafford or current Bama, It takes time off the clock helping the defense rest and limits the number of possessions they must defend, as well as decrease the frequency of turnovers. It would be interesting to see the number of possession the defense had to defend last year as compared to prior years.

This^^. I might be that the UGA offense was the way it was before because of the lack of a good D. Not so any longer. I think this type O likely is really what CMR wants.

Really? At fsu he innovated throwing the ball out of shotgun. He’s almost never been a run first guy. Kudos to him for recognizing the talent he had last year with Gurley and chubb, but it’s insane to say he just wants to run.

I agree about the offense at FSU while he was there but the defenses that FSU faced were not on par with the best SEC defenses of toda . When FSU did face good defenses, Miami, Florida, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, etc they didn’t have the same amount of success as they did versus everyone else. Those teams were able to overcome that when they had really great QBs or Warrick Dunn but the lack of a physical run game (and Field Goal kicking) cost FSU at least 2-3 championships during the 1990s.
I am a huge fan of Richt and think that he is about to come into his prime as a coach. What makes me think this is the addition of better defensive coaches and the willingness to step away from some of the finesse stuff on offense. If our offensive line plays as well as last year and we get the same RB and QB play as last year coupled with defensive improvement we’ll be in the playoff conversation next December.

This is a good point, and wasn’t limited to Mason last season. Think back to that SCar game Murray’s freshman year. Aaron had no INTs vs the Chickens, but other than the occasional scramble, played it very, very, very safe. Do we win if he cut it loose a bit more like the Auburn game later that year? I don’t know, but outside the 1st half of the Florida game, I felt comfortable with Murray pretty quickly, which was a big 180 from Stafford’s first year.

I don’t think there is much advantage to naming a starter after spring. Keep a guy from going through the summer too comfortable.

I thought for sure they would make a decision based on the GDay game. Isn’t that what they are supposed to do?

Naming a #1 by end of Springtime not a big goal for Richt, leading some critics to believe that it will soon be a Summertime for Quarterbacks production with the reviews not coming in until after Labor Day

The only good reason I can think of for the picking of a QB out of the Spring game is that he will defacto become the leader of the Offense. He will be there as the man for the unscheduled scheduled practices. Your leader of 7 on 7 and actually get some quality reps with the WR/TEs. If nobody is the man then it’s leadership by committee and we all know how that tends to work. Either way, there are going to be a lot of sad QB’s next year when the Gunslinger comes to town.

I don’t want to be a wet blanket but…I am reminded of a certain legal saying: “A verbal agreement isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.” When the Gunslinger actually shows up on campus, then I’ll believe he’s coming. Remember Laremy Tunsil?

  11. I said earlier this week that I thought it might follow a similar timeline to when Greene was named as the #1 guy, which wasn’t until 2 weeks before the first game. But after going through all of spring ball, and seeing who emerges as a leader during “voluntary” workouts over the summer, I bet they’ll pretty much know by the time fall camp opens who is gonna be the man, even if they don’t tell us until a little later. And given that neither really has much of an experience edge over the other, I think giving it through the summer to evaluate everything is a good idea.

If only we’d chucked Mason to the curb and stuck with Ramsey! What difference would a 7 – 6 season have made anyway? We still get the recruits, TV money, new coaches, raises, etc. and now no QB controversy other than wondering what to do with Park.

Hmmm…but then we should chuck Ramsey to the curb now and start Park this year so that he’s ready for next season. But then the new kid will have arrived, so we’ll need to chuck Park to the curb and…

If you have two starting QBs, then you have no starting QBs. If you have zero starting QBs, then [head explodes].

I don’t see how anyone who watched Ramsey play last year could have expected a coronation. There was obviously a reason he was first off the bench, but he needs to show considerable improvement and open competition might push him to improve.

I think, with our offense (Chubb, et al.), you really wouldn’t have to end the competition by the first game. Our first two games are cupcakes, so I could see getting a lead and playing a several quaterbacks, seeing who has the best timing with the receivers and deciding after a game or two who you will name as the starter.

People may be discounting the fact that Bauta is the most senior of the three QBs and one of the hardest workers on the team. I’d bet the coaches aren’t too concerned about naming a starter for summer practice because they know Bauta will make sure those workouts go well.
