Kind of like voting … if you don’t go then you can’t complain … 🙂

Hosting the G-Day game during Masters weekend is one of the dumbest ideas ever. Why on earth this is the weekend of choice is beyond me.

Agreed. The Masters needs to get their priorities straight.

Yes, it is a strange way to think from those who should be better at marketing to the sports fan, respecting a great tradition, and caring about their loyal fans. I realize that not all Dawg fans are golfers but do you really need to be a golfer to appreciate how very special The Masters is? You don’t have to play the game, or have tickets to get caught up in what is the best run sporting event in the world, and one that rarely, ever fails to provide drama.
I grew up in South Georgia, did not really play golf until college, but recall as a young teen listening to the radio broadcast on The Masters network. There was something very special about it before I ever understood the game or its traditions. Back then we only had a couple of hours of TV on the weekend days, and that was in black and white, but it certainly moved something in me. As a Georgian, I was especially proud that this very cool, internationally admired event was held in our state. It has only gotten better, my favorite sporting week of the year.
No better loves our Dawgs more than I, but during Masters week, and I mean all of the 7 days of that week, everything takes a backseat. I will record the G Day Game, may even read a few comments during that afternoon, but the TV will be on that Saturday round. I still occasionally go, mostly to refresh my memories or see the few changes, but my preference (after the first couple of times) has always been to attend the practice rounds and be in front of a TV for the competition where I can see every significant shot. Shame on McGarity and Richt for making fans choose when there are several ways to avoid that conflict. It is a scrimmage, do it the week before, or the week after the greatest sporting event…..evah!

Mac, I agree word for word with everything you said. Actually, our entire athletic department should be forced to walk the hallowed grounds of Augusta National during tournament week to see the smiling faces, the beautiful grounds, clean restrooms, incredibly cheap yet delicious sandwiches, and the cash spent in the club stores. All run by volunteers. I believe the dear Senator on opined the same note. The UGAAD should be embarrassed for holding this scrimmage during such a glorious sports weekend.

Player’s dad said the G Day game is no more important than any other scrimmage game regarding the depth chart. It is simply open to the public, held in Sanford and has more fanfare around it.

That may be true for every position except quarterback. See…QB is the only position that folks can easily see and think they know something about, so the QBs all gotta look real pretty on GDay.

I know Comcast or CSS has broadcast the game locally… but other Georgians with the SEC Network will now be able to watch it without driving 2+ hours. I wonder how this will affect the attendance. I doubt seriously that I’ll make the trip if I can watch it on TV with free cold beer and championship golf just a click away.

Last year we rode over from Atlanta, watched the 1st half and then went to Blind Pig and watched the Masters. Probably do the same this year.

Some guys don’t even have to wait until G-Day to name their starter. There are people on the 247 message board that are already totally convinced that Jacob Park should be the starter. A good G-day performance by Park will only cement those prognostications.

It still boggles my mind that Georgia schedules this on top of the Masters. Incredibly arrogant and/short sighted, but then we are talking about Butt smear.

Howbout this… Golf is a marginal niche game whose biggest event isn’t even in the top 50-75 most watched sporting events during the year.
A horribly boring tradition unlike any other.

I know you’re an internet blowhard who doesn’t want this to be the case BUT there’s a lot of overlap between Georgia football fans and Masters fans. You don’t want it to be so…but it be so.

I never said it wasn’t so. I know it is true, I have plenty of friends who like golf and love the masters. But to act like it’s some sort of sacrilege to schedule GDay on the same day is silly.

Actually, it’s silly to act like it doesn’t hurt GDay attendance/ratings.

Spare me. Good behavior and class can transcend all of God’s diverse creatures, if they would get their heads out of their asses and stop wallowing in self-pity. You don’t advance much when you spend your whole life looking backward. But you are right, it is a glorious history!

Been there many times covering it and as a spectator. Parents had tickets, still do. Played golf all through high school (and before) and college, watching golf on the other hand is, to me, like watching paint dry.
Ultimately, I decided there was no point in continuing to knock the ball in the hole when I had already done it.
