Kidding aside, if you do it, make it on a trial basis first. The nice thing about this blog is that the comments get barbed, even caustic, but rarely abusive. People might not be as careful responding to ‘questions from the audience.’ You know there’ll be some jaw dropping questions but the questioners deserve a modicum of respect.

Your blog… but bad idea with the exception of game days. IMHO as the popularity of GTP has grown, so has the presence of newer commenters determined to troll, argue, etc. and on topics often far removed from UGA football. One of the “throttles” on the discussion is your limitation of topics. Benevolent dictatorships are a good thing…I’m really not interested in what others want to post as topics. They can always email you with suggestions or start their own blog.
But you’re a free speech guy, so…good luck with it.

I’m not doing this out of a sense of free speech. If there isn’t a broad demand for it, I’m not going to waste my time doing it.

On that note Aus, maybe the Sentator should consider troll bait posts that suck up troll time and energy. Such as “Richt must be fired. Who should we bring in? Saban or Belicheck?” Or “Based on my statistical analysis of practice, and what I am hearing from ‘insiders’, Quarterback X should be starting over that noodle arm quarterback Y that Richt chose”.
Thomas Brown could then moderate. 😉

“Washington supported Islamic extremists in Libya — now its trying to combat those same extremists. Washington fights with al Qaeda and ISIS in Syria, and against al Qaeda and ISIS in Iraq. Washington wages war against Iranian-backed militias in Yemen while fighting alongside Iranian-backed militias in Iraq. Washington backed and participated in Ethiopia’s aggressive war that destroyed Somalia’s first stable government in a generation — and now has spent years fighting the extremists who arose in the vacuum … while putting the leader it originally ousted back in power. Washington’s aggressive, repressive military-security apparatus has grown to gargantuan proportions for the ostensible reason of fighting Islamic extremism — while Washington is the strongest ally and chief weapon-supplier to the chief source of Islamic extremism in the world today, Saudi Arabia. Washington (belatedly) backed the overthrow of the military dictator Mubarak in Egypt and now supports the restoration of the Mubarak regime under another military dictator. Washington sanctions and condemns as a war criminal the leader of Sudan — and is now fighting alongside the war criminal leader of Sudan in Yemen.”

The way that slogans are stolen is insidious. Fing Scooters applied to have licenses to sell in the Mid East only to discover that our company title was being used all over what with the Fing Isis, Fing al Queda, Fing Iranians, Iraqis, Libyans, Saudis, Egyptions, Somalians, Syrians, Sudanese, Yemeni crickets, Ethiopians (and closians), Fing Shiites, Fing Sunnis … our name has been usurped all over.
As if that’s not enough, we are waiting patiently for our first football game sponsorship, The Fing UGA Spring Game. Will it never get here?

could be worse. W could have paved the way for Iran to get a nuclear bomb.

True but I’m pretty sure Israel is going to take care of that kerfluffle on its own

You mean he didn’t? The Iranian nuclear program started during the Bush administration. It was pretty much in response to invading its neighbors on both sides. Seems we might have encouraged them to seek some diplomatic and military leverage. We don’t invade countries that have nukes you know. So yes, W paved the way for Iran to have nukes. So it was worse. The worst president ever. Thanks!
At this point our choices are:
sanctions without inspections
inspections without sanctions
all out war.
The last ain’t gonna happen no matter who the president is. There is no palatable military solution to the Iranian issue, period. Even Cheney knew that. Hence, the W administration did not stop the nuclear program in Iran.
It was interesting see the Saudis weigh in last week with, you’d better get a deal or we’ll get some nukes too. I’m sure Bibi would love to have multiple nuclear powers in his neighborhood. Its a big shit sandwich and W stole all the bread. Again, thanks!!

That is cogent analysis I reckon. Israel has been tap-dancing with our politics in an unprecedented way over the past year. It just wants to be sure that the USA will kiss its ring and come to defense with a nuke when it drops the hammer on Iran soon. (And we will, pitifully).

Not too sure how the other goes w/o you being too busy moderating or delegating moderation like Tidefans.

Why bother? Many of the “focused” posts – and all of the ones that have even the slightest political angle – end up being de facto “open threads” anyway.
Keep on doing what you’re doing, Senator.

Boss, something I have noted (and, unfortunately, participated in a time or two) is that some of the “conversations” deteriorate into mud-slinging contests. These things, when you take a step back, seem like those “mine is bigger and better than yours” interactions we used to have in the high school lunch room.
I don’t know whether your open thread idea would encourage that stuff or not. Maybe, in fact, it would allow those of us who want to engage in that sort of verbal jousting a place to do it without interrupting the flow of the football-related posts. Or something like that.
I am with Aus and Large, and with Dolly… Game day, ok. Keep on doing what you are doing etc.
Hell, you started this mess, if you think it is worth doing, it probably is.

One more vote for not fixing something that isn’t broken. I am grateful for the somewhat sane commentary here. There’s plenty of places to view free for all commentary. Not saying that the folks who regularly visit here would make it a free for all because by and large, the regulars are pretty sane. But there are folks who troll occasionally and once there’s blood in the water…

I’m not voting no, but I agree with the sentiment that it could be a weekly flamefest in that thread. Maybe if you could treat it like a community self-help, let others here answer the questions there, you (mostly) stay out of the fray. Then you could answer the (Top X) ones you find worthy of an answer in a weekly post. I’d read that, for sure.

What would keep thread wanderers from hitting those threads you want kept sacrosanct for football? You would edit yourself out of business. It’s up to us to get things back on thread, or, for the sake of levity in a tense conversation to go off thread. My favorite pastime is sticking barbs into the serious folks mostly to discourage rants, but am quite guilty of going off often all by myself. I just would ask that you measure both sides of my blog coin before throwing me off and continue to allow a cheap advertisement of Fing Scooters from time to time.
I did purposefully get back on thread concerning the first-practice blog this weekend. What’s wrong with ignoring posters like Mr Ed…sorry…EdDawg and continuing to enjoy ourselves? Policing ain’t an answer because it would kill the wide open pur[osefully-driven opinions here. 🙂

Why not try it? I have seen it work quite well on other blogs. As this blog grows there will continue to be folks who won’t comment because they don’t feel like part of the “in” crowd. I think an open thread gives them a chance to become part of the conversation without getting yelled at because we’ve already talked about said topic in other threads. New blood is a sign of a healthy site.

No—that would be a disaster, IMO, as there needs to be at least some structure to keep the idiots relatively in check. If I were you, I would pick 1-2 “non-dawg” subjects weekly, comment on it, and open it up to discussion. Some of the best, most entertaining threads here have involved various non-uga related blog posts (such as the recent Indiana Gov. vote last week), in which, before you know it, you have 150 replies.
And given the time of year, this is a perfect time to explore or experiment with such a venture. With that said, I’d still shy away from politics, as that often becomes an immediate screaming match; but instead choose from random, popular current event happenings, weird/funny news stories, other sports topics/news of note, and the like.

I wasn’t really thinking about this being a project for political questions, just football-related stuff that I don’t address, like recruiting.

That is why it is called an open thread. I would have one rule. The topic or conversations have to be UGA or football related. Then let them have at it. Anyone who thinks it will get crazy can just skip it. It will not hurt to try it out. What is the worst that can happen?

they already have an outlet for that…..elsewhere. The people who come in here (IMO) do so because they like what they find here. Often, they come here initially because of the chaos they’re fleeing elsewhere. You are doing a great job here. Don’t overthink it. It’s the old KISS rule, right? 😉
Don’t worry about not being everything for everybody. Keep doing what you do so well.

How come Steely Dan wrote one of the great lines in all of rock and roll and their tribute football team was Ala damn Bama?
“Learnt to work the saxophone
I, I play just what I feel
Drink Scotch whiskey all night long
(Aah)
And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world
I, I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama, “The Crimson Tide”

Doesn’t seem needed but I’m not really opposed to it. I think the key to it was already pointed out earlier. It must be UGA football related.
