Wednesday morning buffet

Another day full of buffet goodness:

  • Art Briles says Baylor’s non-conference schedule had “zero impact” on his team not making the CFP last season.  He’s right, in that had Baylor not lost to West Virginia, it would have been in.  He’s wrong in that the non-conference schedule left Baylor with zero margin for error.
  • What do you get when some economics professors rank the intensity of college football rivalries?  This“Within a conference, the most intense two-way rivalry was between Central Michigan and Western Michigan…”  You might want to think about tweaking your measurements, fellas.
  • If Natrez Patrick stays at inside linebacker, at ten or so pounds heavier than Alec Ogletree, he’d be the biggest player ever to suit up at the position under Richt.
  • Nick Saban wants to be clear about satellite camps.  He’s agin’ ’em.  And you don’t want to offend Alabama on the recruiting front, people.
  • So, there was an inside guy on the Winston crab legs heist?  Steve Spurrier’s gonna have to come up with a new nickname for FSU, methinks.
  • It’s only April and the 2015 watch lists for awards march has started.  Wake me when it’s over.
  • It looks like Georgia Tech has landed its B-back for this season.
  • Year2 discusses the case for Nick Chubb’s Heisman possibilities.

I was thinking mainly about obvious run downs but I don’t think it will matter all that much considering Pruitt’s scheme. It’s probably a trade off but I also don’t have any knowledge about Patrick’s cover skills…he may be a big guy with good feet.

The Stanford transfer twice refers to GT as “George Tech” in his letter. No doubt O’leary will add “school named after me” to his resume. Also, Stanford has an MBA program, so how does he qualify to transfer?

Stanford probably actually has standards for getting into their MBA program. It is one of the top in the country so I doubt they’d bend the rules for a football player and have their GPA/GMAT statistics go down

Yeah this confuses me too. Maybe I’m missing something but Stanford is probably a better avenue if someone has aspirations of playing football post college. But if the guy isn’t a serious pro prosprct contrary to what some techies would have you believe Stanford is light years better than tech academically especially when it comes to mba programs.

The whole Winston crab legs incident has been blown out of proportion from the very beginning. It was pretty obvious on the video that the guy was hooking him up. I’d bet at least 95% of the commenters had a bartender pal give them a free drink at least once during their college career.

In a related matter, Winston didn’t really jump up on a table and shout an obscenity either. He did stand on the table to make an announcement welcoming all students to the next baseball game, but before he could say anything another player who is a ventriloquist shouted the obscenity making it APPEAR that Winston said it. Winston, being a good teammate and not wanting to get the other player in trouble, took the fall for that one too since he already was in trouble anyway.

      • It just provides further evidence that the NCAA is all about preserving its monopoly on any benefit intended for any college football player. They don’t care about theft because the thing stolen wouldn’t have come to them anyway. But giving away groceries that could have been in their fridge? NFW, man.

It’s still stealing, isn’t it? And the crab-legs thing would have been a non-issue if not for that whole rape allegation thing. But given the video and the timing of it, it was another clue in a pattern. That’s what made it significant.

Of course it’s still stealing, but you likely live in a glass house. Again, throughout the course of your entire college career, did you ever accept a free drink from a bartender or anything else of the sort?

Whatever keeps UGA’s moral victories intact though, I guess.

what are you talking about? Winston did what millions of other college kids have done, including you most likely. That’s not to say it isn’t wrong, but this alone doesn’t make him a bad person nor does it reflect badly on FSU.

          Are you agreeing or disagreeing?

Bad analogy. Most bartenders are given a certain number of “on the house” drinks they can give away per owner/manager policy. Reward regulars, big tippers, etc. While bartenders can sometimes abuse these policies, there is no real way for the customer to know. I very seriously doubt Publix management was on board with the “hook up” Winston received.

That’s funny, I worked at a bar for two summers and never heard of such a policy. Regardless if it exists or not, if it’s your friend giving you the drinks then you know that he’s not doing it for any of the reasons you listed above.

Stop trying to justify your stealing so that you can point the finger at someone else.

Hauling accusations my way about “your stealing” and my so called justifications for such are jerk moves. Funny as I actually never said anything about my own behavior. Or if I have friends who are bartenders. Owned a bar. Managed and bartended many, many bars. Pretty much every bar in ‘merica including corporate bars understand part of the drinking culture is kicking somebody a free shot or a free drink. I used to tell my guys to make a cheap shot and share it around rather than buying the drink the guy was going to purchase anyway, but occasionally it was called for.
As far as giving your friend a drink, well, your friend probably spends a lot of money coming to hang out where his buddy works, which means he’s also a regular and also somebody I can count on to tell me there’s some dude trying to kick down the towel dispenser off the wall of the men’s room or who I can grab to stand behind the bar if I have to fetch a couple cases of beer.
The whole point of the original comment, I think, is not that we haven’t all done stupid stuff. It was that shortly after being accused of rape the guy does ANYTHING suspect. Even if I hadn’t done the act, I’d be freaked out enough by the mere suggestion to never leave my house again. The second incident is noteworthy not because of the seriousness of the crime but because it indicates he probably feels above the law and that social norms don’t apply.

That’s a cop out. Period. Unless the person at the store telling he didn’t have to pay was a manager, then it’s just a store employee encouraging him to steal. He knew what he was doing.

And it wouldn’t be an NCAA violation unless someone in charge was authorizing free food for players. And given that someone called the police, that’s not the situation here.

I knew that I was underage, didn’t carry a fake card and always went to a large city where it wouldn’t be questioned – like a Tiki Bar in Atlanta. Free bar drinks only came later in life and for some of the reasons ASEF and others have mentioned. I never frequented a bar enough to be known while an undergrad.

No, you’re spouting BS. I had a good friend in college who ran the hottest bar in town. I never put him in that position. He valued the job too much – more for the hook-ups than the pay for sure, but even the hook-ups didn’t get freebies.

And none of this relates AT ALL to the fact that Winston’s claim makes no sense. If a bartender hands you a free drink, them you are both stealing. If he comps you $32 in free drinks, then you are both stealing a lot and your friend is both an idiot and a thief.

The store called the police. The store would not have called the police if it was comping players free food. If a store employee is telling players how to come into the store and steal food, then it’s still stealing, It really is just that simple.

Trying to find the correct place to jump in and support your remarks, ASEF. The thievery issue is a familiar one between Tallahassee businesses and FSU football players. Has everyone forgotten about the Mall and Bullocks’s employees not charging anywhere near the worth of clothes and shoes bought there? Another Heisman winner was caught up in part of that . It came down to an “inside” employee at the cash register favoring the FSU players with big discounts (80-100%) on clothing and other items. All of it was on the police blotter, just as Jameis is for stealing crab legs by walking out without paying. The person has to be behind the cash register to comp him, they can’t be in the deli where they simply wrap it and price tag it so that it goes through the cash register up front. You can see that Jameis walked around the cash register if you ever watched the film of his theft.

ASEF is correct in that it’s just more bullshit from an individual who can’t fess up to anything. If anyone cares to run it down there will be no facts about an employee letting him walk out with free food. Then it will be proven that the lying sob ain’t changed his stealing ways.

Why do you resort to cussing and calling people out when someone disagrees with your opinion?

I for one think the “inside man” is just the latest Winston lie. The same video you saw made me think he was acting alone and strolling around the store trying to be nonchalant. Whereas if I had someone hook me up I would have just left and not spent several minutes walking around the store.

Now that does not mean I am right and you are wrong, but see how I was able to do that without resorting to cussing at you or telling you that you have no values.

I say offend as calling someone a troll is not cussing at someone (IMHO). You very well may intentionally be trolling and thus happy someone acknowledged it. For example you call me buddy in a way that I personally find offensive due to the way it is used. However, I choose not to last out and cuss at you because you may or may not be trying to offend me. It is called taking the higher ground.

All that said feel free to lash out at those that lashed out at you or offend those that offend you, but it would be nice if you could at least respond to the correct individual that wronged you. Admittedly that is going to be difficult as will require you to keep track of which people you have deemed lashed out/offended you and those that have not.

“That’s not to say it isn’t wrong, but this alone doesn’t make him a bad person nor does it reflect badly on FSU.”

    But this does:

“On Thursday, April 16, two weeks shy of the NFL draft, Erica Kinsman filed a civil complaint against Jameis Winston, the FSU quarterback who will almost certainly be one of the draft’s top picks. Kinsman is suing Winston for “sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment, and intentional infliction of emotional distress arising out of forcible rape” that she says happened early on the morning of December 7, 2012.

The lawsuit—obtained by VICE Sports and embedded at the bottom of this report—contains two new bits of information that could prove damaging for Winston. The first is then-Winston teammate Ronald Darby’s remorseful Facebook message after the assault—Darby is one of two FSU players who was present the evening of the assault. The second is that Kinsman’s legal team has located the cab driver who took Kinsman to Winston’s apartment the evening of the assault—something both the Tallahassee Police Department and state attorney’s office had failed to do.”

If both of those things are truly new then she should fire her attorney.

Not to derail the thread here, but I also don’t pass judgment one way or the other in situations like this unless the accuser proves it in a court of law. There’s way too much he said she said that enables both rapists to walk free and scorned women to assassinate the character of an innocent man.

We can revisit once she gets her day in civil court. If she can’t prove it under the lowered threshold allowed in civil vs. criminal then the claims are unsubstantiated. Period. To claim otherwise is to assassinate the character of a person you do not know simply because it makes you feel better about a football team from your college not winning like he did. Pathetic, really.

In the article about Chubb, the excuses for Fournette not being at the forefront of running backs is because he is in a tougher division than Chubb. When will the Superman-waiting-to-put-on-his-cape excuse stop for all the pundits who didn’t see Chubb on the horizon and who continue falling all over each other to make their predictions about Fournette come true?

The SEC West overhype machine is the only reason I can think of that makes all these writers/pundits say Auburn is the second best team in the SEC for 2015.

I think the reason my posts touch such a nerve is because they rip away some of UGA’s moral victories, and since that’s all that we really have over the past decade, it tends to sting.

When I was a freshman I saw Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno getting free drinks at Bourbon Street. Totally different situation though I’m sure 😉

    • Let me summarize why people accuse you of trolling in four simple steps.

Step 1 – Take stance that is considered controversial for whatever-fucking reason you deem it necessary to take said controversial stance.
Step 2- Other users disagree with your controversial stance.
Step 3 – You continue to dig a deeper hole by doubling down on controversial stance.
Step 4 – Upon exhaustion of Step 3, you create a straw man argument by saying UGA fans must be too reliant on their moral victories because you’re so deep in your own bullshit controversial stance that you can’t even logically support it anymore so you have to deflect onto the rest of us for why we don’t just agree with your controversial stance.

You are one of the biggest “look at me!” posters here that wants to convince everybody that you have the hottest of #HotSportsTakes and just continue standing behind your controversial opinion. Which hey – that’s your prerogative, but it blows my mind that you can’t fathom for one second why other people around here may not agree with your controversial stances. Then again, you’re also the one that can’t resist resorting to a straw man argument.

That, my friend, is why your posts touch a nerve. I’ll stand by my comments from a few weeks ago from your “women deserve a portion of their beating” bullshit and recommend you quickly learn the first rule of holes.

Also – if you can’t tell the difference between accepting free drinks at a bar (common industry practice as has already been discussed ad nauseum above) and what Jameis Winston did at the Publix (I assure you the store manager at that particular Publix would frown upon that sort of arrangement with a seafood associate)…you deserve all the scorn that gets thrown your way today.

“if you can’t tell the difference between accepting free drinks at a bar (common industry practice as has already been discussed ad nauseum above) and what Jameis Winston did at the Publix ”

Some guy googles it and posts a link and now it’s “common industry practice” for frat boys to give free drinks to their brothers? LOL, ok buddy. What was that about straw men?

There is no difference between an employee giving Winston free crab legs and an EMPLOYEE giving Matt Stafford and Knowshon free drinks. They were both underage at the time too, buddy, so your entire argument is incredibly flawed.

YOU are the one who set up a straw man today.

“There is no difference between an employee giving Winston free crab legs and an EMPLOYEE giving Matt Stafford and Knowshon free drinks. They were both underage at the time too, buddy, so your entire argument is incredibly flawed.”

Let me put it to you this way, Tom Brady walks in to a bar. The bartender recognizes him and gives him a free drink because he likes A) Tom Brady and B) that Tom Brady is making his bar more popular by just being there. Is Tom Brady stealing? No he isn’t. For 2 reasons 1) The bartender chose to give him a free drink and made the discount himself (something bartenders generally have the ability to do on their own) or 2) Tom Brady is paying for his drink with his popularity. As long as he’s there, the bar is going to make more money because more people will be interested in his presence.

Now a different situation. Tom Brady walks in to a Publix and gets free crab legs from a mid-level employee who does not have the power to give random people (even Tom Brady!) a discount. How do we know this employee can’t give discounts? When Publix finds out crab legs are missing and Tom Brady is on tape walking out of the store with them management calls the cops. Is Tom Brady stealing? Well, if he didn’t know the employee wasn’t authorized to give him a discount, I don’t think so because he’s not consciously taking advantage of the system. But if he knew the guy was giving him crab legs for free and shouldn’t be then yes he is.

Now how can we relate those two scenarios to the ones you’re up in fits about?

Stafford and Moreno probably didn’t, “steal” those drinks as you’ve so often repeated. They were either given to them by an employee who could make the decision to comp their drinks or by an employee who decided their presence was desired to make their bars sales better. That’s not illegal. It’s a NCAA violation, yes, but not illegal. (And side note: And why are you bitching about them being there underage? You said you’re 27 and that you saw them there Stafford’s freshmen year. Doesn’t that mean YOU were there underage? Personally, I don’t really care if you were there underage, but the fact that you’re throwing that out there as if it matters because Stafford and Knowshon were is pretty hypocritical.)

Now, on to Winston’s case. Publix isn’t getting any more publicity from Winston walking in, grabbing crab legs, wandering around, and leaving. It’s not like he’s not going to stand there in the seafood department, eat them, and jump on a table and scream about how f-ing good the crab legs are at Publix, so that doesn’t seem like a likely situation. So maybe it was just an employee who had the authority to give a discount giving Winston a discount (he’s like a crab leg bartender). Except we know that’s not the case because Publix called the cops when it figured out what happened. So that’s it looks worse for Winston looks to get free crab legs from Publix (esp since he’s now saying it was an inside job which means he knew they were free and shouldn’t be which means he DID actually steal them) than it does for Stafford and Moreno to get free drinks in their college town where they are famous and people do want to hang around them.

But even if you completely ignore my argument the situations still aren’t the same because that the crab legs were probably worth way more than a free drink (which the legal system cares about), Winston got caught on tape taking the crab legs (evidence we don’t have for Stafford and Knowshon), then he either lied to the police or lied to his coach when asked about them (and he talked to the police because Publix called them – something else that didn’t happen to Stafford or Knowshon). Not to mention that restaurants and grocery stores are widely known for not being okay with people taking or receiving their products without paying for them whereas there is at least a rumor or common thought that it happens in bars when a bartender makes a decision to comp a drink.

But yeah, they’re EXACTLY the same.

You know, for someone who has been ripping people for their moral high horse-ness and “UGA moral victory-ness” all day you sure seem to ride yours pretty hard.

Actually, jumping on the table screaming about how good the crab legs are seems like exactly Winston’s style. All it’s missing is someone defending his dickish behavior as “the same stuff all college students do.”

You glossed over how they were underage at the time, and I don’t think the law distinguishes between a $5 drink and $32 crab legs. I think the window is a bit wider than that.

Funny how you say this yet ignore the part where I said Stafford and Moreno were underage at the time 😉

            1) A $5 drink and $32 crab legs are both petty theft, so no, the legal system doesn’t care one way or the other
            2) It was illegal for Stafford and Moreno to take the drinks. They were UNDERAGE.
            3) No bar owner or manager would approve of a bartender giving free drinks (or any alcoholic drinks) to a minor,
            4) No bar owner or manager would want the publicity of obvious underage youth drinking at their 21+ bar
            5) Yes I was there underage. I’m no saint and that’s why I’m not throwing stones at Jameis for mistakenly taking crab legs that he thought an employee was giving to him.

Anyway, funny how you ignored the very pertinent details of my post just so that you could write that essay. I’m all for friendly debates but don’t accuse me of straw men when you’re doing the same thing.
