It’s all just a big misunderstanding.

Why can’t we just leave Kirk Herbstreit alone, dammit?

You know, it would just be a lot easier if he’d simply say he’s sorry that he didn’t express himself correctly, which is what I suspect he told Richt privately.  But if Herbstreit wants to leave it on us, that he was misunderstood, it’s hard to see how the snark ends.  Unless kids stop getting arrested…

***************************************************************************

UPDATE:  Welp, that’s fifteen minutes of my life I’ll never get back.  Herbie has the utmost respect for Mark Richt and we misunderstood his intent when he tweeted.  Buck says that those of us continuing to poke at Herbstreit are part of the lunatic fringe, for not letting things go.  And Kincaid claims this is more about Georgia fans defending Richt from criticism than trying to hold Herbstreit accountable for his lack of consistency.

Thanks, guys.  I learned a lot.

On the other hand, I am quite sure Mark Richt feels much stronger, more competent now that he has the validation of Kirk’s respect.

Them that can, do, them that can’t get on TV and talk about them that can.

Tweeting publicly to Belue, “Call of the trolls,” is a very odd way to get people to “chill.” Earlier he used the word “morons.” The guy has thin skin for someone with a bully pulpit. Social media is a two-way street, Kirk.

He respects CMR so much, that he the only one he willing to personally call out on twitter. If you respect him, then you defend him. You do not bash him like he had something to do with it.

I agree, think he misspoke and just can’t spit out the apology. As much as he screwed UGA over with his embarrassing 2007 mistake, I think he does like Richt and UGA. There is so much media ink spilled due to UGA’s over reactive policies that Herbie got caught up in it. But if truly bad behavior bothers you, and it does me, there are more fertile targets than Georgia. He fumbled this one, needs to man up and even say that UGA sets a higher standard and should be commended for not playing games with fudging their standards.

Herbie popped off on Twitter a while back about how CMR has lost control of his program because there were so many kids getting arrested and thrown off the team. If I remember correctly, it was sometime last summer when JHC, Trigga Trey, and all the others who got in trouble and ended up leaving/being kicked out of the program.

Here are his tweets…You be the judge.

*4 UGA FBall Players Arrested (via http://ble.ac/teamstream ) I am dumbfounded how this seems to happen at UGA EVERY yr *

Clearly some of the UGA players take advantage of Coach Richts forgiving heart. No fear of the consequences leads to ongoing shananagins.

Dear moronic fringe UGA fans–I’m a huge fan of Coach Richts, well aware of him kicking guys off tm, simply stating this trend is gettin old

A lot of you couldn’t be more off on my point, of course he’s kicked guys off, but his players continue to make poor choices. I respect and Admire Coach Richt & to say any differently is wrong. I simply wish he didn’t have to deal w/ this so often. If misunderstood I’m sorry.

I’m more frustrated for him then bashing him.

*Just had a really good conversation w/ Coach Richt. Very thankful he & I were able to talk & express ourselves clearly. *

IMHO, he jumped on the bandwagon and when called-out started to walk it back and probably did realize it was far more critical of CMR than necessary.

Still hate him for ’08, so this is just noise to me.

I suppose it’s news that Herbie respects CMR. And I suppose that should somehow provide me with a measure of relief, given all the power and inluence ESPN wields. Whew! Thank God Kirk Herbstreit respects Mark Richt!!! Now I can flush my anxiety pills and start eating solid food again.

Forget about the obnoxious, arrogant, self-absorbed characters at ESPN. Forget about Keith Olberman or Mark May or the highly-educated, ultra-successful Brit McHenry. The incomparable CFB analyst Herbstreit says he respects CMR. Mark Richt and the UGA football program have been validated. Officially. We are renewed. We are back. All is right in the world again.

    Bring on Louisiana-Monroe.

The sad part about it is, that even though you’re being completely sarcastic in your post, the reality is that having ESPN’s talking heads pump UGA and CMR up is really valuable. And valuable not only in public perception but, in real dollars and cents. If they can talk us out of the MNC game like in ’07 then, they could almost certainly do the same the other way around and into the CFP. Getting there and possibly winning it all will bring tons of cash into the program over the years.

So, while I feel the same way as you in saying, who really gives a shit what Herbie thinks or says, it can and often does matter. Although you won’t catch me losing any sleep over it.

      • I agree with this 100%. Questioning a head coach that way could also hurt in recruiting. Because negative recruiters will run with anything they can get their hands on. Like it or not Herbstreit is on a pretty tall soapbox and his shared opinions–even when misspoken or misunderstood reach a whole shitload of ears.

I would especially like to hear him address that ’07 season and the Herbstreit Doctrine.

          Leave Herbie Alone!

“After the first quarter was over and ESPN went to a commercial break, Fowler and Herbstreit smiled and gave each other a fist bump….Once the broadcast is officially finished, they congratulate each other on the season and head to the elevator. There are no signs of the frantic energy inside the production truck in the moments before kickoff. Herbstreit gets out on the second floor and heads to another ESPN set, while Fowler heads to field level. It’s all over.”

ESPN has turned into one massive marketing/commercial program that happens to show live sports in between Subway, Movie promos, and Erectile Dysfunction commercials. They officially destroyed college football…

that’s what so many people don’t understand. To the suits who run ESPN, sports are just a bridge between ads. If they could make another $10 per ad slot showing Downton Abbey reruns, they’d drop sports tomorrow and start loading up on DA, breakdowns of DA, interviews of actors from DA, and speculation on what comes next on DA. None of them care about sports for the sake of sports. They only care about what draws another set of eyeballs. Tradition? Who cares. If they can monetize it, then put the players in pink tutus.

So he respects CMR, big deal. Railing at CMR is like dumping on the flag, mom, or apple pie. It’s everything else about UGA he hates. Whenever an opportunity comes up to trash the program or berate fans as the “moronic fringe”, you can count on him to jump all over it.

Gee Buck, if poking fun at Herbstreit makes me part of the lunatic fringe, then I have to confess that really hurts. Now, if you’ll excuse me I must answer the text from Knute Rockne concerning my thoughts on the forward pass. As for Herbie, screw him.

As far as I’m concerned, Buck has some CMR backing up to do as well. Maybe my memory is slightly skewed, but Buck was dinging CMR harder than anyone back when and at the time I thought he was actively campaigning to replace CMR. That and his haughty stance of “I’m the one who threw the pass and was always going to write a book about it before this guy published before me and stole my right(s).”

No love here for Buck as the attacks on CMR were also coming from his quarter. Haven’t heard an apology or “I was wrong.” coming from Buck so he will remain as an ahole in disguise until he has another chance to try and screw Richt.

My memory may be spotty, but it’s long.

Both Buck and Kincaid are entertainers – they alternate taking absurd, contra positions in order to generate faux controversy/disagreement which (I presume) ups their ratings. The smugness and self-righteousness also drives callers, which also moves the needle. I would suggest not taking either one too seriously (reegardless of how seriously they may take themselves).
