Australian for bowl game

Meet Paul Sergeant, CEO of Melbourne Stadiums Limited, who is part of a group proposing to host a bowl game at Etihad Stadium in Australia next season, featuring teams from the Pac-12 and Mountain West.

It’s a group with a unique sales pitch.

While the other bowls pay the participating school or conference between a few hundred thousand to several million dollars for their appearance, the Australia bowl would not pay the schools or conferences any money. However, it would cover all expenses instead. Sergeant also said his bowl would not require ticket commitments from each school.

“The key element is there’s no risk for the conference or the teams,” Sergeant said.

Throw in some ESPN bucks, and it’s probably a better deal for schools than some other bowl games.

Who knows?  As a bonus, the coaches could spend a little time on the trip scouting for punters.

To help further promote his brand, when not playing games in Dubai, AD Steve Patterson at Texas has already made a request that the Longhorns be included in the list of teams eligible to play in the Austrailian Bowl;-).

  2. I don’t see it happening. Just yet. This is what can happen when you try to grow turf in a dome. Yes it has a retractable roof. HG Turf ain’t getting it done. Perhaps Georgia will develop some for them. 😉

It has been criticised by players and coaches for its slipperiness, hardness and lack of grass coverage.
*In 2007, studies were conducted by the University of Melbourne to investigate concerns that hard surfaces, such as the surface at the Docklands Stadium increase the likelihood of player injury, in particular anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries (knee).[23]

I’ve been to Australia. It’s a LONG way. Jet lag to the max.

You sure they didn’t mean Austin?

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Sports Commission has received certification for a new college football bowl game. The game is expected to be played at UT’s Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The exact date has not been confirmed, but the group hopes to play the game on Dec. 29 or Dec. 30.

Etihad’s not a great venue for watching games. If they were going to play it in the MCG, now that would be pretty interesting. The Melbournians do love their sport, though, so I imagine the turnout would be solid.

Will they be serving drinks with alcohol?

Well, from a player’s standpoint, it would have to be more fun than Boise or Shreveport or wherever else there’s not much to do and the stands are empty during the game. From the school’s financial situation, a pretty good deal, and the NCAA and school get international exposure. The only poeple screwed are the local fans, so I bet it gets done. 😉

  8. Will there be steaks and Bloomin’ Onions? If so, I’m in! 😉
