It was a good day.

And, lo, there was much rejoicing.

I’m not going to revisit the many low points of Wagers’ career here.  It’s clear that he got a bug up his butt over the Celebration and never got over it.  But this was the lowest point of all, and, as far as I’m concerned, should have resulted in some serious repercussions from the SEC office.

That didn’t happen, but at least he’s no longer around.  Good riddance, don’t let the door hit you on the ass on the way out, etc.

Eve of destruction

Ray Watts is about ready to bring the sham to an end.

If Watts still refuses to reinstate football, despite the money raised by Filler, other boosters, the city of Birmingham and the UAB Undergraduate Student Government Association, Williams said, “I think this would cement his legacy in a very destructive way. His tenure at UAB will be marked by his destructive behavior.”

Somebody really ought to write a book about the end of UAB football.  It would make a helluva read.

If you haven’t got your health, then you haven’t got anything.

Well, this is good news.

“I think every guy who’s injured or had an injury (will be cleared by June),” Richt said, noting former Dodge County standout Leonard Floyd among the group. “I can’t think of one guy that has a limitation.”

If that holds, then the Bulldogs will be a seriously healthy collection when they gather in a few months for preseason camp.

No injuries, no suspensions, no Jimmy Williamson news?  Weird times, man. Does anyone else get the feeling something awful’s about to happen?

UPDATE:  More good news.

Mark Richt is gaining control over every damned thing lately, it seems.

Remember, it’s all about what’s on the front of the jersey.

Seriously, how any of you can argue that individual student-athletes’ names, images and likenesses don’t have intrinsic value when even the schools themselves know differently is beyond me.

Amateurism, my ass.

“You have to have a conference champion.”

If this is what passes for informed commentary when the selection committee gets together to ponder which schools should play in the national semi-finals, bring back the computers:

When asked at the Big Ten spring meetings whether having co-champions impacted the Big 12, Alvarez replied, “One of our main criteria is conference championship. You can’t give two teams in a conference the conference championship. You can’t give two teams credit for that.”

Alvarez said the Big 12 “didn’t have a champion, they had co-champions.”

What, it’s too hard for you to figure out which team was better if the Big 12 doesn’t provide a label?

I didn’t think it was possible to sympathize with Bob Bowlsby, but there it is.

Thanks, Barry.  I can’t wait to hear your rationale when Notre Dame makes the pool of four.

Jim Delany’s tactical retreat

It’s stunning to think that no one outside the Big Ten has joined Jim Delany’s Merrie Crusade to bring back freshman ineligibility.  I mean, he wrote a 12-page paper on it!  Here’s a guy whose entire career has been devoted to sweet reason and the world just gives him the back of its hand.  If only it was Karl Benson alone he had to convince.

But, alas, such is not the case.  Selling dumb ideas is hard work.  So what do you do when it’s not working?  That’s pretty obvious:  you change the label.

Three months after the league created waves with its reintroduction of debate over a practice eliminated more than 40 years ago, commissioner Jim Delany is backing away from serious talk about his “A Year of Readiness” document.

“That is not a proposal,” Delany said Wednesday. “It may never be a proposal. But is a great pivot point to have this discussion.”

What discussion?  Nobody’s talking to you about freshman ineligibility, Big Jim.

“The most important thing is there be a discussion about how prepared the student is,” Delany said, “how the school accommodates that preparedness and how it all works.

“There’s no simple answer. There’s no one answer. This is not an answer standing by itself. And it’s not ready. It’s not mature enough to be a proposal. If it were, it would be a proposal. Instead, it’s an effort to encourage a discussion about the importance of education. And it’s happening, so for that, we’re happy.”

Well, I’m glad you’re happy, because it sounds like not even everyone in the Big Ten was on board with your proposal pivot point.

“It’s really a discussion piece,” Indiana athletic director Fred Glass said. “I think it’s a good thing. I’m personally not sure I’m a fan of [freshmen ineligibility] ultimately, but I’m a fan of having the conversation. I’m a fan of talking about ways to make sure academics is front and center.

“I think it begs a broader conversation about other ways we could make a student who plays sports have a more college-like experience.”

Meaning the student-athlete isn’t exactly having one now, Fred?  Sounds like another pivot point coming in 3… 2… 1…
