Ask the experts: Greyson Lambert

All week I’ve seen the beat guys and bloggers turn to other members of the media for insight on what Lambert’s transfer to Georgia really means.  There have been some interesting insights offered, no doubt.  But I’ve never really felt like I’ve gotten to the real nitty gritty.  You know, the kind of deep analysis that comes from years of almost obsessive observation of Mark Richt’s football program.

Fortunately, I know just where to turn for that.

They never fail to satisfy, do they?  This is the best line from the entire bunch:

I hate the Dogs, but I think it’s irrelevant in June whether this kid plays for them or not. Heck, Joe Cox is 1-0 vs us as a starter at the cesspool…ugh, I just threw up a little in my mouth.

I know how you feel, brother.  Kinda felt that same wave of nausea after last year’s pooch kick.

I have to assume in this case, by refering to them as “experts”, you are actually using the “technical definitiion”: X is the algebraic symbol of the unknown and spurt is a drip under pressure–Expert is an unknown drip under pressure.

The only thing I’m interested in hearing out of GT is…”A huge asteroid slammed into the Georgia Tech campus today….”

I didn’t want to throw up after the pooch kick, it is a pretty common decision by coaches in that situation, but I did want to puke when we gave up a 25 yard scramble on the next play. Still didn’t think their kicker could hit that FG. Of course, after two fumbles on the one yard line by us and an “invented” call on the fake FG early in the game I should have known destiny was not our friend that day. So many things went wrong.

I don’t really understand the angst over Lambert but I guess in the off season there is plenty of time for speculation. He is the 4th QB to leave UVA under that coach, he is from Georgia, has a hot GF on campus, and can join a program that is ready for lift off. What is not to like about that for him, particularly since UGA is down one QB from the norm and there are rumors Park might fly the coop after the spring? Good call from Lambert is all I can say.

The most intriguing thing that you wrote, Mac..is, “He is the 4th QB to leave UVA under that coach”..so one wonders, “what might have been” with Greyson had he been under more competent direction. He may be a diamond in the rough. That, to me, is the big elephant in the room.

You have an interesting point about ‘diamond in the rough’. Funny how UVA doesn’t have much regard for Lambert. But their football program is a dumpster fire and they’re going through QBs like nobody’s business. Yet CMR, who’s won quite a few games and knows a thing or two about QBs, is welcoming him with open arms.

And both of you are right on point about Richt taking Lambert. If his nerves haven’t frayed too much and can be repaired, he probably has a big upside and Richt will prove that with him. The trust that can be built by the line will be the medicine he probably needs to show off. That and the support from a person he’s known and cared for for some time and that he is now with at UGA. Here’s hoping.

The one I don’t understand is:

“I’m pretty sure post GDay the trailer park claimed they had a race between Marino Jr and Elway Jr.
And were a shoe in for the playoff.”

No one thinks this. I mean really no one. Do they sincerely believe that people think this? If so why? How did they come to this belief about our beliefs?

    I am genuinely confused.

    • I don’t know what the hell they are thinking either, but reading tour post gave me a great idea for a nickname for Jacob Park. “Trailer” Park would be an awesome nickname. I hope he stays just so we can call him that as he leads us to a NC.

Great sentiment, Gurkha. Look out for the guy below because he has a Nerd sentiment found throughout Dawg Nation and waitin’ for Fall. Sic’em, Ug.

Wish all of yall could be out on the refinished patio with me this afternoon, drinking beer and talking football with my neighbor, Mr. Piontek, whose name you know the pronunciation of by now. Mango Margaritas will be served later with fresh smoked chicken, jalapenos and fresh-picked garden tomatos made into salsa, but first have to make some shrimp dip to be served as appetizer with fresh cucumber slices. When the garden comes in, one must try to keep up with production. Reminds me: simple lunch of fresh sliced garden tomato sandwich with salt and mayo coming up. Yall have a good Sat.

Everybody blames Richt for the pooch kick, which was a very reasonable call at the time.

Here’s what I blame Richt for in that game: It’s fourth down and UGA has the ball on the Tech goal line with 33 seconds to go and the clock is ticking. We call timeout to set up our last chance play. We score and pull ahead.

We should have called timeout with 3 seconds on the clock, scored our TD, then pooched the kick.

It wasn’t the pooch kick, it wasn’t the scramble, it wasn’t the field goal kicker, its wasn’t the OT. It was the timeout on 4th and goal with 33 seconds.

A football is a prolate spheroid, and it’s shaped that way because that’s also the shape of an inflated pig’s bladder, which is what the first footballs were made of. Because of that it bounces funny.

I dunno. Running the clock down to 3 seconds is kinda iffy and risky.
After the Conley catch and drop ruling the clock was reset to 38 seconds and ball placed on the 5. Dawgs go to their stud rb and he gets two yards to the 3 yard line. Now its fourth and 3.
Fast forward to the 2:22:35 mark and after that point the announcer says: it was Georgia Tech that called the time out in order to get their D ready for our last play.- Bobo calls a another short and goal pass play ( will he ever learn? 😉 but somehow scores a TD to go a head by 3 leaving “22” seconds on the clock!

There were about 40 seconds left when Georgia started this drive following a dribbled ko:

There was one second left when Auburn snatched this victory following a missed kicked fg.

Sometimes it just doesn’t seem to make any difference how little time is left on the clock.

      …just sayin’

Watching those, I had forgotten what kind of an arm Elway had in college. Most the other QB’s are winding up like they are trying to throw a shot put, while Elway sort of casually flicks it down the field.

I’m a huge CMR fan but there’s no question the pooch was 100% the wrong call. As was calling a time out so Tech could set up the tying field goal.

It’s pretty rare that a loss can absolutely be attributable to a coach’s decision, but the end of that game is all on Richt.

For those who would eliminate Tech from our schedule, isn’t this reason enough to want them to be the ONLY team on our schedule if we had to pick just one?

I don’t know. I hate losing to them but I don’t care what they think. They’re so ridiculous that they’ve reached self parody. I can honestly say that of the Tech fans that I know, one of the, is a good guy who isn’t freaking crazy when it comes to this game. It’s important to point out that he grew up a UGA fan, but wanted to be an architect so…Tech. He doesn’t root against UGA when we aren’t playing Tech. Every other tech fan that I know is crazy and the type of person that only other Tech fans would want to spend any time around. I was sick that we lost to them but honestly we didn’t deserve to win that game. Two fumbles inside the two that were sure touchdowns? You can’t do that and expect to beat anybody. Don’t get me wrong, if we hadn’t screwed around there at the end and still let them win, I would have taken it. But we didn’t deserve to win that game.

  10. I don’t get all this “if we hadn’t fumbled 2 times on the one we win” talk. Last time I looked fumbles were part of the game. We screwed up, we lost. Same with the pooch kick. 20/20 hindsight is awesome. I should have bought Apple back in the ’90s. Then I could pay cash for that jet I’ve been looking at.To bad it don’t work that way.

That’s one way to look at it I guess. Another is that those are two touchdowns that we left on the field that would have changed the game completely. Yes fumbles are part of the game. That doesn’t mean you just shrug when they happen. It’s not the end of the world and what’s done is done. I also still think both those players are great running backs. But I can recognize all that and still see those fumbles for what they are. To point out that we would have won had they not happened is not the same thing as making excuses. You give away two touchdowns then don’t deserve to win. Come on September.

Sorry Reck, that wasn’t my intent. All topics are relevant. I was replying more to the thought that he sucked. Something tells me that he could suck all season or maybe not even play, but all of a sudden he comes to Atlanta and will forever be known in Dawg history as the one who broke the streak (I know, it’s only a one game winning streak, but hey…).”

    The streak! LMAO!
