Maryland intends to join the ranks of beer providers at football games, because, you know, it’s all about being able to “enhance the fan experience in the facilities”. The fact that the school will make money is just an added bonus.
I do like that there’s an egalitarian side to this.
In 2008, the university decided to allow beer and wine sales starting in the 2009 football season in Byrd Stadium’s 64 new luxury suites. That policy — similar to policies at many other schools — states that suite sales must be carefully monitored, sales personnel trained and certified, and drink maximums enforced.
“Beer and wine sales are already available to the hundreds of fans in the boxes and mezzanine level at our sports venues,” Loh noted in the letter. “This proposal will extend that option to fans seated elsewhere.”
Of course, there are those who don’t think the plebes can hold their booze.
“We told them we didn’t think it was a good idea,” Charles W. Caldwell III, chairman of the county’s Board of License Commissioners, said Wednesday of being briefed recently on the plan. “I don’t think they paid any attention to us.”
Maybe it’s because you don’t pay as well, Charles.
I wonder what happens when beer sales meets fines for rushing the field.

Be prepared for a full body search to make sure you don’t BYO into the stadium. ..And don’t expect it to be real cheap or real cold.

They going to be able to monitor maximums for everyone else in the stadium?!

And Maryland will still not even come close to selling out its stadium.

I’d drink, too, if I had to go to Maryland football games

^ Yes. Lots. Pain avoidance (and probably deferral, as it were).

Russ, with that kind of remark, Randy Edsall will have your ass walking the plank
“Men, there are four ways of doing things aboard my ship: the right way, the wrong way, the Navy way and my way — the Randy Edsall way. Let me say this: We do things my way and no one else’s, because Randy Edsall is all about one thing, and one thing only. And that’s Randy Edsall.” And Mike Locksley

Hell, our awful concession stands can’t even pour a coke right or keep a bottle cold. God knows what would happen if we had beer.

I get the point you’re making, Senator, and agree that there is definitely a self-serving side to this. That said, maybe we’re looking at this the wrong way. We’re concerned that the fan experience at games is having trouble competing with the experience folks can have with some brews and a big screen TV at home. Maybe we should welcome this as a way for the schools to compete. If the schools get to make money off beer sales, is that such a bad thing? I have to pay for beer anyway (though probably not as much). Might as well let some of that cash go to support the athletic department…

Can you imagine beer sales at Sanford ? hell we miss a quarter of the game already just for half full cokes (on request, with lots of ice). We’d miss at least a half trying to get beer.

Actually sprite, not coke…. and then when its gone you still have ice so the second one is on the rocks.
