Georgia-Tennessee: have we got your attention yet?

Field Street Forum links to a Vol site’s analysis of this year’s matchup.  Here’s the conclusion:

Georgia’s won five straight in this one, but ever since the 41-14 waxing in 2010, every game in this series since has been decided by one score, with a couple games coming down to the very final seconds.

The Bulldogs clearly have the upper hand right now, but aren’t at the point of owning this series yet.

I don’t know what the author’s definition of ownage may be, but five in a row is pretty damned dominant, regardless of point spread.

And with regard to that, even there, you can find a little back story.  Yes, every one of the last four games came down to a one-score margin.

  • 2014:  35-32
  • 2013:  34-31
  • 2012:  51-44
  • 2011:  20-12  (Note:  UT scored with 2:45 left on the clock in the fourth quarter.)

But you know what else every one of those four games sported?  A big (at least two scores) Georgia lead.

  • 2014:  21-10
  • 2013:  17-3
  • 2012:  27-10
  • 2011:  20-6

This team has recently had a bad habit of relaxing against Tennessee.  Maybe it’s time to take the Vols seriously for a full sixty minutes.  Try hanging on to that big lead, guys, or stay focused by struggling for the game’s entirety.

Nobody gave us any slack for playing Florida close all this years.. We own the series for now, but that doesn’t mean I don’t respect UT on the field.

That doesn’t read right… We didn’t play Florida close every game ALL those years.. but we didn’t get credit for when we played Florida close. That’s what I was trying to say. It’s early, need some coffee, fly flew in my face while I was typing.. yadda yadda.

Valid point, I always maintained that series always was/is competitive. Despite the UGA fans that put up the white flag during the “down” years, neither team lacks respect for the other, that game is always one of apprehension for fans and coaches. Both sides has had periods of Up trends, and both have a history of pulling unexpected upsets. Fan braggadocio aside, any game involving a historically good SEC power is uncomfortable. I like our chances against both TN and FU this year, but when those weeks arrive I will sweat them out.

Unless my (quick) research is wrong, the last time Georgia and Tennessee beat Florida in the same year was 2004.

          Before that?……….1971.

Yeah, but put yourself in their shoes Senator. When you’ve lost something like 38 straight to Florida, five in a row is only halfway to “owning” the series.

10 straight to Florida and 8 straight to Bama. A lot of streaking going on in Knoxville right now.

  5. Tennessee will probably beats us in Knoxville. We can’t stop the run and they’re going to rush dobbs about 50 times straight up the middle. I hate to think it but we are going to go 8-4 this year

If you’d have asked me to name the team on our schedule that we’d beaten five times in a row, I’d never have guessed Tennessee. This series has been so stressful these past few years that it just doesn’t seem possible.

This is turning into a season of we’re all tied up.
RIcht is 5-5 against the OBC while at USC.
The Georgia-Hillbillies series is all tied up.
The Georgia-Barner series is all tied up.

  8. Well dude…when do we stop getting whipped by spurrier! I’m dang arse sick of it! Also I can’t believe yall are already sold on Pruitt. The jury is still out on him. He also is unable to get those blue chip corner backs that we so desperately need. Watch the nerds rush for 500 yards on us again. We are gonna need the D to win a few for us this year and I still don’t have confidence that they will. We better hope those freshmen DL are ready to go or we will get gashed again

    • It’s not that I’m “sold” on Pruitt, as you put it. I’m just pointing out that he did a helluva job last season with the talent he had on hand – and the stats bear that out.

And you’re the first person I’ve seen criticize his recruiting.

While Pruitt’s obviously not the football brain that you appear to be, I’m guessing that he’s as aware as you are that the run defense needs shoring up.

      • Ok well then…we have a walk on Aaron Davis who has to be protected by our safeties or he will get lit up again like he did vs Clemson. We have no corners on the roster who can lock a WR down. We don’t have a big name corner commited yet in the 2015 class

The state of GA is critical to UT having any semblance of success. Every coach there is going to circle the UGA game as possibly the biggest on their schedule, save Alabama. That game is going to be close and uncomfortable more often than not.

    Like

    • Macallanlover

We are circled, no doubt, but with Oklahoma, Florida, and Arkansas before us they can hardly be emphasizing just us. Their dream bubble could have already burst before Oct. 10. I think they are likely to have two losses before we come in so they could be in desperate mode (how fricking often does that happen to us against them?) While we will get all they have, we may also have our own need to view that game as something more than just a streak extender. Will be hard fought, like that their depth may already be tested before mid-October.

At this point I see us winning the game because of their OL issues and our ability to pressure Dobbs. They have a good defensive front but Arkansas will have pounded them before our 4-headed monster RBs arrive. Lot to be learned before being confident of the 7+ point win I see now. See them around 7-5 this year.

I think even the people who are never happy in our fan base would end up happy if we were 12-0 on November 29, for the simple fact that they are only happy when they’re miserable. Therefore, the fact that they are miserable when others are happy would be a source of joy to them, and eventually make them happy!

I guess this isn’t the most appropriate story to comment on Pruitt & Co, but I’ll be interested to see how the D adjusts this year now that players have had time to learn more of the system. Specifically, will the safeties remain in the deep backfield or will they cheat more – perhaps helping against the run. I expect LoCarter to make a huge impact at OLB, thereby solving some of our containment problems from last year – and increasing our sack totals. I’m in agreement with most Dawg fans that we’re still a bit soft up the middle until the newbee DLs pan out. We had a terrific recruiting class, especially on D. Won’t surprise me to see Patrick and Thompson as solid starters by the ut game.

UTK finally has some top-notch athletes on both sides of the ball. Depth is becoming less of an issue now, and they’re starting to believe that they can win, not just compete. I think they have a decent year, probably beat 2/3 between us, FU, and SCe, just hope it’s not us.

Sgt Carter has them kids thinking they can win the East….somebody needs to squash their dreams. Why not us?

Everyone wants to talk about our potential hiccup games with UT and Mizzou coming off Bama and then playing those two. It works both ways. UT finishes with us in a stretch with UF-Arkansas-UGA. They have to play OU week 2 as well. We might even get them more beat up than we have ever before.

We get Mizzou at the end of South Carolina, Florida, Georgia. They’ll be wiped out as well and they come to our house.

We get Auburn at the end of Arkansas, Ole Miss, A&M, and UGA. We get the Cock’s at the tail end of UNC-UK-UGA.

We get A LOT of teams at a good time. Both us and Bama have patsies the week before. Both us and UF have open dates the week before (but they play LSU while we play Mizzou 2 weeks before).

Even Tech plays VaTech on Nov. 12 (thursday), then at Miami the week before they play us.

We have a very balanced schedule and catch basically every good team we play coming off a tough stretch. Two stats worth remembering:

Mark Richt has gone 11-1, 10-2, 9-3, 11-1, 9-3 when he has had a 1,000 yard rusher. His average season with a 1,000 yard rusher is 10-2.

In the 12-game era, Mark Richt has had ONE season in which we didn’t play another Power 5 team: 2012. We went 11-1 and got as close as we’ve gotten to playing for it all. This year, we only play Tech OOC from Power 5 conference.

Statistical evidence tells us we’re going to have a 1,000 yd rusher, which means 9-3 at worst. Statistical evidence tells you that we have a much more manageable path without a Clemson, ASU, or Oklahoma St. on the schedule. That’s not pollyanna, that’s just reality. Maybe there will be a new stat-breaker this year, but history shows that we’re very good with a 1,000 yd rusher and when we don’t have to play another one of those Power 5 teams. A good defense doesn’t hurt. UT will be ready for us — but we’ll be ready for them, too. And I’d rather have Nick Chubb on my team.

I think everyone mentioning UF as an issue for UT should stop. Sure they may have two losses when the UGA comes up (OU and ARK), but UF is not gonna be one of them – streaks don’t matter if the current team version is a train wreck.

    • Cosmic Dawg

Well, that train has been wrecking for a few years now and they’ve still beaten Tennessee. But agree UT beats UF this year.

Honestly, this is the first season I’ve been excited about our defense since my days in Athens in the early 2000’s. I get the feeling that we are about to see something special defensively this year. I love the fact that we finally have a couple of “preseason” games to build some confidence for the stretch we are facing with bama, UT, Mizzou and FU.

Will be interesting to see if the balance of power in the east confirms how it’s looking heading into the fall…UT and KY trending slightly up, Vandy and SC trending down. Florida and Mizzou perhaps about the same.
