Word comes down that the NLRB will soon issue its ruling on the Northwestern players’ bid to unionize. And with that, Andy Schwarz’ piece asking if Stanford would really follow through on its claim of moving to Division III to avoid the consequences of that is worth rereading.
Man, between Stanford and the Big Ten, D-III football could be all the rage soon.
That type of thinking wouldn’t fly in the SEC, other coaches would beat a school to death in the recruiting arena if a school threatened a move like that. “See school ABC doesn’t care about you and your needs and wants but we are willing to give you $XXX,XXX.XX to play football with us.”

“unless Dr. Hennessy and Mr. Muir think of themselves as mercenaries, and Stanford itself as a mercenary educational enterprise.”
Where I come from we call that there the nut graph. Deft slice Andy.

What will Obama’s NLRB do… I wonder. Can’t wait to see the debris of unintended consequences and half empty stadiums. And yes I already gave up my tickets.

Did you give up your tickets only b/c players are going to start getting paid?
Attendance was already starting to decline before this topic ever got hot.

No… gave up my tickets after 2009. Just too much of a hassle for three decent games per year and it was evident that my daughter wouldn’t be using them in the future with any degree of regularity.

Three decent games in a good year is what you meant to say. The total cost per ticket has gotten really absurd and when you add the additional costs of tailgating, parking, travel expense, etc it gets very hard to justify.

You gotta love the bravado and grandstanding on display with this issue. Deep down Stanford and the Big Ten/Fourteen know they won’t do shit.

Wow the old “I’m going to take my football and go home” defense. That should work out well.

I am down. We would kick the hell out of Wisconsin-Whitewater or Mt Union. Then we would have our national title!

That is almost some here would have us be to get that. Give me the great match ups whenever we have a choice, and win SEC titles. It is supposed to be exciting entertainment….sometimes it is. As a porch monkey every Saturday, I do get to see a great game or two, or three almost every Saturday. Not for everybody, but I love the CFB season every year, and all but one Saturday (usually) every weekend of the fall.
I applaud those that are happy with what they are served, you get what you are will tolerate. In the days when there were few choices due to lack of television coverage, I agreed that Athens was the best option.
