You know, I was fully prepared to fire off a blog post mocking Alabama for being the team embracing black jerseys this season, until I found out Nike’s got bigger plans than that.
According to a report, several college football teams will be wearing black uniforms this season. Andrew Lind of the Tidewater News tweeted several photos on Saturday of black Nike uniform t-shirt designs — the same designs that will reportedly be used on jerseys this fall. Teams that are reported to participate include Alabama, Florida, LSU, Georgia, Florida State and a few others.
Yes, the same people who visited those Power Ranger abominations on the Dawgs for that 2011 game against Boise State are ready to dazzle us with this:
No, it’s not the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen – although we haven’t been blessed with a helmet shot, so there’s still a chance – but I find it amusing that with all the debate among the fan base about when the Dawgs should choose to dabble in going black again, the decision is apparently being taken out of our hands.
And how schmucky could Nike be with this? Why not dictate that Georgia has to wear these in the Alabama game?
I’ve got no problem with going back to the black Jerseys.. but the caveat is it should look like our regular uniform, just making the jerseys all-black. If this means they’re messing with other aspects, I’m not excited about it at all. We’ll see.
As for the coordinated effort amongst certain teams.. I think it’s kind of stupid for a team like Alabama to use black, when its not one of their colors… I’d never favor UGA donning some color that’s not part of it’s base color scheme, let alone not one of the official colors.

We already don a color that is not one of our school colors: silver.

That is true, but the silver is not some johnny come lately fad. Standard used to be silver britches and silver hats. That color has been with our football heritage almost from the beginning. The red hat with power G is a relatively new piece starting in 64.

I would not mind seeing the old silver britches and hat used from time to time. I cannot stand this black-out crap. We look like the falcons.

True dat.

It’s one of our base colors though..

Those look more Alabama or Florida St-ish, maybe its the garnet looking red. If it puts you in the Nike ‘cool’ schools club, fine but the blackout jerseys, results aside, look better.

Can’t wait for the season to start.

These look like t-shirts instead of jerseys. They are awful. And pretty much the same for all the teams.

Do we have to go thru this every year? Why not just brag about the fact that we didn’t lose any offensive lineman to injury last year. Ask the Falcons how that’s gone the last two seasons, when they basically went unscathed in that department for the previous 5 years. Quit tempting the football Gods!!

The kids love this stuff. Plus there is a Nike swoosh on it. Even more reason for the kids to dig it. I prefer the old black jersey, but what do I know?

I think the black jerseys were fine. We just need to not associate their use to a lot of hype. Hell wear them against GSU or GT without all the hoopla. Only wear them in cold weather and at night. You would be nuts to wear them in the early games.

Reading the update to the linked article, McGarity says no alternative uniforms for us this season.

Always thought that the black jerseys with the red pants and red helments would look really sharp!!!!

I really don’t care when they where the black jerseys and I hope they do, but Nike needs to find themselves a new designer. The traditional black jerseys are just fine. Wonder when They’ll design something for the fans that suck. Hell, we’ll probably buy them.

I’m still for a “black jersey after 6:00PM kickoff” consistent policy

Concur. Just don’t make a deal of it and everyone knows if we kickoff after 6, get crunk with som’n black on. Good shot of it working out that way huh?!!?

The black jerseys we had before were awesome. Red shoulders with a black jersey and red numbers? Awful. Just awful. I don’t know why Nike has to be so consistent with taking a good thing and making it awful. That uniform pictured above looks like something Adidas would come up with.

Why does UGA or any school for that matter allow Nike, Adidas, under Armor, or any other shoe and clothing manufacturer to create bullshit uniforms like this? I’m very proud of our uniforms. These uniforms improve nothing and make our players look like dipshits. Thanks for nothing Nike.

Hey guys….as noted above, this has been debunked. McGarity says no way.

The black jerseys had nothing to do with Alabama 2008. A cross-country trip set up by Red Panties with no off week or a cupcake in between had everything to do with it. I loved the trip to Tempe (The Valley of the Sun is one of my favorite places), but to turn around and play a big conference game six days later was lunacy.
I love the black jersey with the same layout as the red jersey, but it definitely should be saved for a night game late in the year or a bowl game.
Do NOT mess with the helmet ever again, Nike!

They’re not too bad. Eight the money they give I guess they should be able to kick us an ugly uni now and then.

Think I will listen on radio if we come out in those unis. I love the black jerseys and wish we would just show up once or twice with on…no color coordination with fans. It is one of our primary colors and nothing wrong with wearing it. It is actually our best looking uniform, just not our most traditional. But that garbage look above is as bad as black helmets, or monochromatic uniforms. I will be like Fred Sanford, “Here I come Elizabeth!”

Besides being stupid in southern heat, those are just plain fugly. College football used to be about tradition. Now it’s run for ADHD fans that need better WiFi and canned music between each play…in other words, NFL fans.

Not many of us have washed that uniform look from our eyes in the Boise game.
You have to hand it to Boise to stay true to your school colors. Even their turf is blue.
Red, black, white, and silver has been the Dawgs colors thru the decades. Just keep the Crayola pack to those four colors …except on practice days re no-contact jerseys.
Frankly the best color game uniforms belong to Dawgs and Rebs.
