Three SEC questions

I’ve been asked to take part in another roundtable discussion over at The Student Section – three questions on the upcoming SEC season.

I thought I’d post them here and get your reaction:

#1 Which coach in the SEC has the toughest job this season (and why)?

#2 What one game are you most looking forward to (more than any other) in the SEC this season (and why)?

#3 Who wins the SEC in 2015 (and will they go on to win the National Championship)?

Give me your answers.  I’ll provide a link to mine once the roundtable is published.

    1) Les Miles-He has the players with talent, is in a tough division, and will be gone if he doesn’;t win the West.
    2) Provided Ga beats BAMA, then the TN vs GA game. It will tell us if UGA is truly ready to take the step to the playoffs.
    3) BAMA and yes. Will believe UGA is ready when I see it.

1)Agreed for this year. Les’s seat could be getting warm again.
Overall In My Opinion the toughest jobs are Bama and Florida. You win championships or get fired.

      2) Valid on the Bama and UT games.

      3) Bama and I don’t think they win the national title. I don’t trust Jr in close games.

    This seems too easy.
Mason – talent gap, HC experience gap
UGA – Bama (double revenge game)
UGA – no (2 losses keeps them out of playoff)

    • Well, durn, you already said what I was gonna, except I’m not sure our boys will have 2 losses. So my only adds are that Mullen’s got the 2d toughest job, and that the game I’m looking to 2d most is Dawgs whipping FU, which I think will be the pigskin equivalent of what the Hulk did to Loki in Avengers movie #1.

      Ditto.

First question could use some better clarity since “toughest” is so subjective.

Derek Mason. He has nothing to work with.
Alabama vs UGA. We will know what kind of team we have after this one.
This is a prayer. The Dawgs win the SEC but do not win the NC. Because that’s how we roll.

Les Miles – His seat is warming up considerably. Fans are getting itchy for another championship and they’re tired of being 3rd in the west. Not to mention he has a Heisman candidate running back. Anything Les (see what I did there) than a playoff birth and that seat is really going to catch fire.

Alabama at Georgia – I know I’m a little biased on this one but the last time these two teams met it was a classic. I think this will be just as exciting.

Alabama – I think UGA wins the regular season game and Alabama beats UGA in the SECC game and gets into the playoffs. However I don’t think they win the NC.

  5. 1) Little Nicky – if he doesn’t win the national title this year, the Bammers will start the drumbeat to bring Urban back to the SEC

    2) If Miles finds a QB, then the West must go through the winner of LSU/Bama. Otherwise, I think the game of the year is the WLOCP because UF is going to better than many of us think.

    3) Bama to win the SEC, make the playoff, but no NC because they lose to a HUNH, spread team, and Saban calls for a mandatory huddle between plays.

Number three is funny stuff, EE. I can spend some time today thinking of Dickhead working in Tuscaloosa and being hoisted by his own petard on a regular basis.

I can’t imagine UM ever leaving TOSU…He’s got it made there…and he knows how crazy things are in Tuscaloosa..besides, who would choose to have to deal with Phyllistinia from Mulga, etc.?

    1) Mason is obvious here, they should of said “except Mason”. So I’ll offer up either Brett B. at Arkansas or Stoops at UK. Both have huge contracts, but at are a clear disadvantage in recruiting versus others. Do the fan bases of those schools really think paying that kind of contract for a 7 to 8 win team and a bowl win is worth it?

    2) Georgia and Tennessee. If we win this year will we hear the same old excuses as the last two about the brick layer and how he’s building a juggernaut? Most UT fans are circling this one and expect a win.

    3) LSU, but no. The SEC is down right now. It won’t be shocking if an SEC team wins it on, but I’d say the odds are not in our favor the way they had been previously.

  7. 1) mcelwain- going to be very hard to look like they’ve righted the ship enough to attract recruits.
    2) bama at uga- it’s an opportunity to shift perceptions about both programs.
    3) the winner on oct. 3rd wins in Atlanta unless it’s a rematch in which case the loser on oct. 3rd will probably win. The only team outside of the sec that can play with a sec champ is Ohio state. It could come down to whether the sec match up with Ohio state is the first round game or the championship. If Meyer only has a week to prepare for the sec champ I like our chances. If he has a month, it’s a coin flip at best.

    1) Butch Jones. He has prompted high expectations in trailer parks all across Tennessee and doesn’t have the OL or D to deliver. Expect a 5-7 season and Butch to be packing his bags thereafter. 2) Bama-Georgia. 3) Georgia. An oddball team like Arkansas or Missy State will win the West and the Dawgs will beat ’em in the SECCG. And no, the Dawgs don’t win the NC because the SEC will get locked out of the playoff.

Mayor hates TN because deep inside his brain is a powerful hate juggernaut that is as irrational as it is violent and unyielding, if hating TN could be irrational, which it cannot be.

This paradox only makes the juggernaut more crazed and irrational.

Sgt. Carter, he and the Hillbillies have set themselves up to fail. Not enough quality depth for their schedule. But they will spin it and move along. Runner-up: Malzahn for the same reasons.
Tide/UGA and nothing else is close. Excluding UGA games: I think LSU and Auburn is early and will help clarify the picture in the West.
Best bet is UGA simply because they are most likely team to be in Atlanta since the West has 3-4 legit contenders that seem pretty equal. I also think UGA and Team X from the West could be a close match-up.
Don’t think anyone from the SEC will win a MNC. Just not sure an SEC team even gets into the mini-playoff because I think all teams will have a minimum of two losses. Someone in the PAC12 will get by with one loss, ohio plays no one but Michigan State s one of them ends up with one loss, good chance an ACC and Big 12 team gets by with one loss. SEC could be shut out totally in 2015, actually that could be pretty cool for making the “finish the drill” case and getting conference champs in.

  10. #1 several of these answers are really good but they’re answering different questions,,,,Mason has an impossible job but with no real expectations does it matter. At the other end of the spectrum you have the expectations problem which means several people are right that Butch Jones/ Les Miles and probably Coach Richt have fan bases that expect so much that 3rd or 4th place while possibly will set off significant hot seat discussions.
#2 Fla/UT because we get to find out which of these train wrecks(dumpster fires) have turned the corner back to respectability first. As I’ve stated all along UGA/ Bama really doesn’t matter. Neither winner is guaranteed anything and the loser is excluded from nothing. We need to lose at home so as to increase our chances in ATL
#3 Alabama wins it because the Dawgs will win in Athens and lose in ATL and I think Derek (above) is exactly right about sequencing and the National Champs ..if Urbans Myers and his bozs only have a week to prepare I don’t think they win but if they have a month the Ohio State University wins again

Going off the reservation here and saying Spurrier. He has sort of painted himself into a corner with his crazy old man tantrum a couple of weeks ago about how he still has it. He has to have a good season to not have to eat crow. The chicken fans will never turn on him bad enough to run him off, but another lackluster season and he might poke his lip out and go home.
UT/Arky It’s before our game and win or lose, we will get to see if UT is for real or if it is just more media hype.
I think Bama beats Missouri again to win the SEC and goes on to win the national championship.

No reverence, but can’t dispute results. 3 national championships since ’07 and played for another one, 4 SEC championships, top ranked recruiting classes pretty much every year, how do you really pick against them?

I guess it’s easier to launch a personal attack on me than come up with an objective answer.

Can’t get behind Missouri, mainly because of 3 in a row, that is almost impossible these days…too many good teams.

    • JC, I don’t often agree with you, but I do on Spurrier. Mason’s got an impossible job at Vandy as many have mentioned. But I could see SC struggling to be bowl eligible and calls coming for Spurrier to step aside. Of course, I’m not sure Spurrier ever feels any pressure, but if things start to head south 1) he takes his ball and goes home or 2) he digs his heels in and makes for some serious tension between himself, the fans, and the administration. Could be interesting to watch.

  12. You gotta imagine it’s someone from the $4m club in the West. You can eliminate Saban and Gus for having built up enough good will / turning over staff to have a mediocre season and survive. As well as Sumlin and Bert who aren’t expected to win the West, just be competitive. I think the MS schools and LSU have it the hardest: Mullen and Freeze bc $4m is too much for those schools to pay to finish last, and not enough recent history of success to allow a long leash. Process of elimination leaves Les. He’s had too much success to keep coming in 3rd or 4th. He’s boarding on that Richt Hot Seat phase we saw back in ’10.
A biased answer: UGA Bama. I think we get a preview to the SEC championship game where…
…. the winner will make the playoff but not win it all. I’d give Bama better odds to go the distance than UGA, because: UGA, but still think they can’t bring it home.

1 – Spurrier, for what JCDAWG alluded to earlier. His rantrum last month now has all eyes on him. If they go 6-6 again, he may be playing a lot more golf come 2016.

2 – LSU/Bama – This one will likely decide who goes to Atlanta from the West, and lead into number 3…

3 – The east is Georgia’s to lose. I’m selling high on UT, and I don’t think Mizzou will surprise us this year. FU is still a year away, and the rest of the east is hot garbage. We’ll likely face the winner of LSU/Bama, and whomever wins out of those three has the inside track to the NC.

#1 Malzahn. He has a QB being hyped as a Heisman candidate and a DC who will supposedly transform Auburn’s defense. He’s used up his lifetime quota of luck. AU won’t beat UGA and Bama, probably not LSU, and will not get to the SECCG. They won’t be happy on the Plains with 8-4 and another Outback.
#2 Georgia vs Alabama. So much at stake in this one. Might very well ignite the Dawgs.
#3 UGA beats LSU in the SECCG and loses to eventual national champ TCU in the playoffs.

  15. I’ll go with the “except Mason” theme and vote for Malzahn. He is dangerous territory that is familiar to former Auburn coaches named Bowden and Chizik. Another year removed from a miracle season, he lost 4 of his last 7 to close 2014. They have a weird schedule this year with 2 high profile games in the first 3. Lose Louisville & LSU and we could be looking at repeat of 2012. Also I am not totally convinced the talent level is there on offense plus before we anoint him the best defense mind in the SEC let’s see how the former Florida coach adapts to being a DC again.
UGA – Bama. I think the game could be a classic and it will be the bellwether game for the SEC nationally. It happens around the right time in the schedule so the loser can still be in the playoff conversation. If either team wins big then they probably become the SEC’s de facto favorite (if they keep winning) until the SEC Championship.
I want to say UGA. I think it really could be UGA but we have to cross some serious hurdles with our schedule and right now we are not quite close to being a complete team. My heart says UGA but what the heck if it not us let’s just get crazy and say Arkansas. They will not win the NC.

Do you really think Louisville will have a shot at Auburn? The Dawgs pretty much exposed the Cardinal in the Belk Bowl..no?

Mullen at MSU, the success last year has the fans expecting more but was picked to finish last in the SEC west. The talent must not be there to have much success. Not to say he will be on the hot seat, just that his job is going to be tough this year.
Bama at UGA. But the UT UF game will be a close second it will give a good indication of where both teams are in relation to the East and where they will be against UGA.
Bama if they win the iron bowl, UGA if the team from the plains wins the iron bowl and goes to Atlanta. No TCU will.

Miles. And I’m staying with him every year until he actually is gone.

Bama. How could it be any other game?

No idea. I think it’s wide open this year. Bama and UGA both have question marks at QB, which is no small matter. LSU has Miles. The Miss schools are the Miss schools. ARK is the UT of the west. Could win a ton or could have troubles. SC? Mizzou is going to have issues with who they lost on the DL. The only ones I know are a sure no are Vandy, UK and UF.

Gus because he came in riding so high and had so much go his way…if there’s another fall-off this season, the folk on the Plain are going to begin to realize they’ve been duped…and the secret midnight flights to other distant places will commence,
What game?..it’s easy to pick UGA/Bama, but it is so early in the season that a loss can be overlooked with a sucessful season following, or it could cause a let-down for the winner unless the coach is very savvy about such things..UGA/AU may be the game that Georgia finally breaks out of the face-plant business and becomes a team that takes care of business. But because it is closest..UGA/Bama…(It’s also tantalizing to imagine UGA thrashing South Car. to put an exclamation point on Steve’s decline..but I never count that guy out.)
UGA/Bama in SEC Championship….but it’s hard for either to beat the other twice. If it should happen to be Auburn out of the West..Georgia pounds them twice. The question of who wins the MNC doesn’t compute for me right now. Were def getting too far ahead of ourselves. But Georgia…with a whole ‘nother year under the defensive tutlage of CJP, may be ready to take those three extra steps..(SECC, First Round, Final Round). I’ll need some valium, though.
