Chock full of preseason goodness.
- There sure are a lot of live bulldog mascots.
- Phil Steele threads the needle with this “Mark Richt isn’t on the hot seat, but…” post.
- The NFL hypocritical? No way.
- Does Georgia have the SEC’s easiest path to the CFP?
- Here’s a pretty cool story from David Hale about stadium oddities.
- Patrick Garbin snags an interview previewing the 2015 season with Pulpwood… nah, not that Pulpwood. The real one.
- I knew talking to a dietitian about tailgating tips was a bad idea.
- Sports on Earth’s SEC preview is a pretty good read.
- Boy, talk about your bad decision: once upon a time, Kansas had a choice between Charlie Weis and Gus Malzahn.
- And here’s a list of ten games the CFP selection committee will be keeping a careful eye on. Georgia-Alabama is in there.
Dietitian and tailgating should never be used in the same sentence. Angioplasty and tailgating is a more appropriate word use. 🙂

O.K., I’ll bite. How do they put Russ last? And why doesn’t NC State have a wolf for a mascot? I get there’s a risk of a maimed cheerleader, but the upside of the coolest mascot in football could be huge.

I read an article about that a few years back. Basically, they have tried a couple of times but wolves are so skittish by nature that they get freaked out by the crowd. One of them broke loose, ran away during a game and was never found again.
But yeah, that would be cool if it would work.

Author of Mascot piece lost any and all credibility placing Russ last.

The post is just click-bait anyway, so I was hardly shocked to see that the author actually states he’s looking for a “reaction” from Georgia fans for putting Russ last. Total troll move to generate buzz.

I know I’m gonna get killed for this, but I think Russ is a damn disgrace as an Uga. Actually, the last couple have been lethargic, unhealthy, and grotesque looking. Look at some of the other English Bulldog mascots in the list, especially the opening page with the Miss St. mascot. That is what the breed standard is supposed to look like. Not a listless blob with a monstrosity of a head. It’s time to retire the Seiler’s bloodline and hand the legacy over to the Vet school. Care and handling could be an honor given to the top Vet students, with breeding standards closely guided by the teaching staff. But that’s never going to happen because of tradition, money, the good ol’ boy network, et al.

I agree with the latter bit, but I’ll always love Russ.

UGA X is on the way, and though young, his pictures look a bit closer to the (modern) breed standard. The real standard would look like the old mascot pictures from the ’60’s and early ’70’s.

Actually, the standard was recently revised to help alleviate some of the traditional problems with the breed. Calls for longer legs and a bit longer snout to help the breathing problems.

Good deal. I need to apologize to ‘ol Russ. No one, person or dog, can control their own lineage. Russ has performed admirably, if not spirited. Glad to hear the standard is changing for the better. I sincerely hope he can stay healthy long enough to get a proper DGD send off at Sanford.

From the article on our schedule –
“Following the Alabama game is a difficult stretch with back-to-back games at Tennessee and home against Missouri. Both teams are vying for the division crown and will present challenges for Georgia, but it still beats playing in the West where every week is a new Top-25 opponent.”
Tennessee and Mizzou are both in the AP and USA Today Top 25 polls. Do these guys even use facts any more?

I just finished reading the article. Good Lord what a poorly written piece. All you need to be anymore is a fan of the game with an imagination. Talent and ability seems to have gone out the window for sports writers and reporters.

Never. Gets. Old.
BTW…UGA is currently on a streak of 14 straight years ranked in the preseason top 25, including 6 years in the top 10, 7 years in 11-20, and one season at 23. I think that is the third longest streak behind Oklahoma (16) and Ohio State (27).

Edit: LSU is 3rd with 15. UGA is 4th with 14.

If you click on the link embedded in the Sports on Earth SEC Preview article about UGA being an underachiever (shed that label) it’s a pretty fair and balanced summary of life under Richt and the discussions here at GTP. Don’t recall if the Senator linked to this previously, but here it is:

FWIW I agree with Ostendorf about the Dawgs having the best (I won’t say easiest) path to the playoff. All they have to do is win the East and they have a one game play-in to win the SEC and get into the playoff. The East isn’t as tough as the West–although the East is tough enough–and that should allow the Dawgs to win the East and at the same time cements the strength of schedule issue which is what killed Baylor and TCU last year. You need a tough schedule–just not TOO tough.
