“We didn’t get off to a good start throwing the ball.”

I don’t think you have to go too far out on a limb to suggest that when your offensive coordinator has to defend his starting quarterback’s performance after a mere two games with a declaration that “We’re not panicking”, things are probably not progressing the way you envisioned before the season’s start.

Still, by all appearances, Greyson Lambert remains Georgia’s starting quarterback.  And I get that.  Georgia is 2-0.  Lambert – okay, with a little luck involved – hasn’t turned the ball over yet.  You’ve invested time, effort and energy into him and recognize correctly that he’s something of a project.

But it’s hard to look at this Saturday’s game and not think it’s time for Lambert to show he belongs in the slot.  For one thing, he’s got a lot of talent in the skill positions to work with.  For another, he’s working behind an experienced offensive line that’s done a pretty good job protecting him.

And finally, it sounds like he’s got an inviting opportunity Saturday night.

If they stack the box to thwart the Bulldogs’ run game, how capable to you believe the South Carolina secondary to be at defending Georgia’s passing game, such as it is?

Kendall: South Carolina’s secondary is nothing to be scared of at the moment, but neither is Georgia’s passing game. I would say if the Bulldogs can’t make any plays downfield through the air against the Gamecocks it’s a big red flag for them. I say that for a couple reasons. No. 1, South Carolina is going to stop Chubb first, second and third and that means there will be opportunities in the passing game. No. 2, the Gamecocks are without starting cornerback Chris Lammons (knee) and clearly not very happy with what they have seen from backup cornerback Chaz Elder, who has barely played this year. Safety Jordan Diggs is coming off a tough first half against Kentucky.

So, yeah, I’d say if we get anything close to a repeat of what we saw in the first half against Vanderbilt… well, it may not be panic time, but it’ll sure as hell be time to start asking some serious questions about how things are panning out.

Lambert is a sunk cost. They made a mistake investing that time and energy. They shouldn’t stick with him just because of that. They’ve got to get Ramsey ready for the Bama game.

I get the frustration with Lambert…I’m there too. And I like Ramsey’s throwing style/arm strength better. But ‘getting Ramsey ready for Bama’? He has been in our system for a couple of years now and part of that time was under Bobo’s tutelage. why should we expect him to be ready to play Bama in a couple of weeks if he hasn’t caught on by now? Apparently we wasted time and energy for two years with him.

Also, when the media mentions the QB’s in practice, they never mention Bauta when the talk about ‘good’ things…he must have just falling off terribly.

Except that Ramsey isnt better than Lambert. You want him to be, but he isnt and he has proven that he isnt that great over the last 3 years. He wasnt better than Murray, he wasnt better than Mason and he isnt better than Lambert. He might just barely be better than Bauta.

      • I am not a Lambert nor Ramsey cheer leader but just basing on the most vocal of GTP commenter there are a lot of Ramsey supporters. I remember Stafford and his great arm being intercepted after a short pass by GT which in totality lost that game. What that example show is strong (great) arm does not equate to winning in football games. Just look at how Stafford and Calvin Johnson are doing with the Lions. You can say that the situation at UGA is similar to golf, “Drive for show, putt for dough”, LOL.

I don’t blame fans for supporting Ramsey and overlooking his faults, but we should at least take up “Live and let live” with Lambert. Don’t let our steamboat mouths overload our motorboat knowledge of what the coaches perceive as our best chance. We didn’t get down on Stafford and say he should be the best in a new system by the third game. It’s wrong to hang a yoke on his neck for being human and not perfect.

I get what some say about experience should triumph by now, but we aren’t in his or the coaches shoes. Obviously, Ramsey’s amount of experience hasn’t helped him either and the more you overlook his downside, the more frustrating your fan year will become until you reach a cacophony of “Fire Richt, Schotty and anyone else in sight who can be blamed for our first loss”.

I’ve been in talks with the wife and Donald about giving to the unfortunate and we’ve hit upon free brownies to be handed out beginning Sat. at the site adjoining the Senator’s just for the downers at gtp. Get one before attending the game and you can enjoy it more.

We are thinking of sending complimentary brownies to Jeb’s suite where he will be cheering for SC – in Spanish for about 1 qtr. Thereafter will ensue opportunity shots for media photographers showing him cheering for the cheerleaders, the good-looking woman just below his suite and Cue taking a dump.

Well, it pretty much has to be. Another shit game from him and fans are going to be calling for Ramsey to get the reps in the warm-up game for Bama. I’m just pissed that a guy can suck the way Lambert did the first half and his back-up only gets one series. It almost feels like Richt playing Ramsey just to say he got a snap.

Except that Lambert had a successful second half against Vandy. The whole game wasn’t shit. People are acting like Lambert’s first half against Vandy (which included several drops) is how he has played the entire season.

Lambert may not turn out to be the answer but many of his bashers are acting like Lambert looked in the pocket in the first half against Vandy. Antsy.

Right. Secretly CMR wants to lose his job so he can go into missions. It’s just not in him to quit so he needs to be fired. That is why he refuses to play the best QB. Same with SOS, only he wants to play golf. SOS picked Mitch to start but Orth out-played him when Mitch went out. What is it with these coaches…they should listen to fans that know the best QB to play. I guess if we ever get tired of our humble jobs we can go into coaching and make millions. And, after the day I’ve had at work, I’m seriously considering taking over one of these coaches jobs…then you’ll see some championships won.

I never get tired of the “oh, you think you can do better” response. It makes perfect sense to pull it out on a fan blog.

So, you seriously think Ramsey is clearly better and our coaches just can’t recognize it?

I’m as frustrated as you, I’m sure. But we have seen in the past how we thought the 2nd string would be better only to be proven wrong when the 2nd-stringer had to go in and prove it. How many times have we said…oh, no wonder they had him 2nd-string.

So, yeah, I do think my “oh, you think you can do better” response applies. The point is…the coaches have the opportunity to see so much more than we do. I believe that are playing with the best they have or at least Ramsey has not given them reason to believe otherwise. It is up to Ramsey to prove them wrong. And, if they get it wrong they REALLY must be stupid…and I just can’t believe they have been in the business as long as they are and are THAT stupid.

Ok. I concede that the “oh, you think you can do better” response, is not the best attitude on a fan blog. We all have a right to complain if things are not just right with our team, especially since we pay the coaches so much $. But the point is…with the time they have with the players and the fact they have been doing this job for a long time. Is it possible, in your mind, that they are making the best decision on such a high-profile position?

  3. I know I must sound like a broken record, and I apologize, but it just concerns the hell out of me that we’re going to stick with Lambert while he struggles against these teams that he shouldn’t, and when Richt’s hand is forced to play Ramsey, he won’t have had the opportunity to get experience in these easier tests, and will essentially be set up for failure. I had the same complaint all last year, and it bothers me that we’re putting all our cards on one and done QBs and neglecting to prepare for beyond.

I have no doubt the coaches are in agreement that Lambert gives us our best chance to win. What bothers me is that we have two guys who have been in the system who apparently either aren’t very good or have, at the very least, lost their focus for whatever reason. That’s a problem. We’re going to run what we brung. The question is, what did we bring? I don’t think we really know yet. But I believe we’ll know a lot more Saturday night. I just hope we’re all going to be pleasantly surprised.

    • Well think of the message that Richt is sending to Ramsey. He comes in Saturday after Lambert looks like trash, looks 100% better than Lambert, and then promptly gets benched so Lambert can come back in and resume throwing it into the turf. If you’re Ramsey you’ve probably considered just transferring several times. Wouldn’t fault him if he did.

And you believe that is 100% attributable to ability and the sequencing of play calling had nothing to do with it? Quick – how many times has Lambert thrown the ball 2 plays in a row, both of which were 1st downs (not to mention plays designed for easy completions when Vandy was probably expecting more of the same from Ramsey, i.e. hand the ball to 27)? Get some perspective.

      This.

For good or ill, I believe Lambert is the best one for the job right now. Why? Because Mark Effin’ Richt thinks so. Does that belief make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside? It certainly hasn’t yet.

Can’t any of you understand that a new set of O plays have to be digested and the learning curve passed Ramsey by? That’s all that’s happened. When he gets to where he can perform using a new system, he will have his plethora of skills showcased.

Until then, why don’t you tell Ramsey to learn faster and he would probably play, but after glancing at the people who keep blogging that they didn’t see Ramsey’s bad passes in amongst the good plus they didn’t see the second half Sat, don’t think they have the gumption to digest enough to be listened to when calling for player substitution.

It’s pretty clear that until he costs us a win or two, Lambert is a lock to start and get the vast majority of snaps. Richt ain’t Spurrier. He doesn’t pull quarterbacks (except JoeT3). He sticks with his decisions until they are indefensible. And I’m not even saying that’s a necessarily bad thing. It’s just what he has always done. He’s our coach, there’s not another one out there I’d rather have, and I just hope Lambert catches fire for the team’s sake.

I don’t know what was wrong with Lambert last week. Maybe first SEC road game jitters who knows. But if he plays at home like he did vs. UL Monroe we are going to be fine. Has everyone just forgotten the two TD throws to Jeb and Malcolm into decent coverage that he put right dead on the money?

See, Lambert is the starter cause the coaches think he gives us the best chance to win, but, apparently, that’s the problem cause our coaches are a buncha idiots…they just don’t want to start Ramsey cause he’s an Episcopalian. 🙂

I read where Perry Orth, SC’s quarterback, is a former walk-on. Lambert and Ramsey were both very highly recruited, four star players I believe, and both have experience. Much of our comparative rosters look like this, not just the QB position. How can SC possibly play with us? They should not. This should be the revenge game UGA fans have been waiting for.

I suppose there’s a couple of ways to look at this situation. Was CMB coaching these QBs up far better than Schotty can? Or was the QB recruiting over the past few years below standard? We ‘passed’ on QBs like Watson, and signed Ramsey, Bauta, and Park. Gotta wonder if the QB recruits were really that poor, or whether CMB’s departure left a much bigger coaching void than anyone realized.

I think CMR thought LeMay was going to be the QB after Murray and LeMay was a bust. That’s why we have the situation we have now. What I don’t get is all the others on the roster and why none of them were given a serious look.

Watson clearly is a talent, and I wish we had him. But the ones we have were not slouches when they were recruited and are more talented than many or most of the opposing QB’s we will face this year.
