Keep your seats!

You gotta love this.

That was clearly Georgia’s intent when it signed a contract to host Southern University and its famed marching band for Saturday’s game at Sanford Stadium. UGA has three contracts committing to host nonconference opponents this season — the others are Louisiana-Monroe and Georgia Southern — but only one mentions the visiting team’s band.

Written into Georgia’s contract with Southern is language stipulating that “the band of the visiting team agrees to perform at halftime of the game,” and it is set up that way for good reason…

…“Normally a stipulation for visiting band attendance is not included in game contracts,” Georgia spokesman Claude Felton said. “However, the Southern University band is nationally known for its performing excellence and will provide a unique entertainment experience for our fans.”

Ok, one thing in that article is, to this day, still confusing to me. He mentioned James Brown playing ‘Dooley’s Junkyard Dawgs’ at Sanford Stadium back in the mid 70’s, and others here have discussed witnessing the event here and elsewhere.

However, when I watch that great video on Youtube, its very clear to me that he’s absolutely playing in the Gator Bowl, and not Sanford Stadium. Is my 20/15 vision fooling me or is there something I’m missing? Maybe he played twice…both at the Gator Bowl and Sanford?

Here’s the video to save some of you some time…

Reservoir is correct. I witnessed these events as well. Now, at the time, there may have been a fair amount of Seagram’s V.O. in the vicinity of my bloodstream (I couldn’t afford the good stuff, I was a student) but I remember it nonetheless.

I believe Prince Charles was at one of the games when JB performed. I seem to remember a banner on the bridge that read “Prince Charles Does It Dawg Style”.

He was. We all yelled “Damn Good Prince!” I remember the banner well. He reviewed the Redcoat band by taking a long stroll down midfield at the half. We lost. No more Windsors at Sanford, please.

Truncated post – We lost to Kentucky that day. Must have been a stop on Chuckles’ bachelor party tour of the colonies.

UK had its best team in half a century that year–won the SEC.

Kentucky Did NOT win the SEC that year….on probation and could not. Actually won the SEC in 76

Yes 76 co-champions with us because Mississippi State had to forfeit a game to them.

Then lost it when they were put on probation.

I was at that game. Couldn’t hear James from the upper deck but you could see his moves and hear the bass player.

The Redcoats’ electric bass player played in the band for several years until UF complained to the SEC.

Yep, and someone had a big poster that proclaimed: PRINCE CHARLES DOES IT DOGGY STYLE! To my wife’s sheer embarrassment 😉

Ironically enough, I’m headed to NOLA this weekend and then out of the country on a cruise. Hope somebody will post video.

They are the one reason I watch the Bayou Classic every year…

James brown also got up with the cheer leaders at the 1976 Cotten Bowl and sang Dooley’s Junkyard Dogs. The Ark fans sitting around me didn’t know what to think. JB was the best part of the game as we got crushed by Ark.

The real question is if the Human Jukebox is loud enough to be heard over Ice Ice Baby from the sound system.

  13. If we’re going to play an FCS opponent, this one is going to be fun. I know they seem to be excited about the opportunity to perform from everything I’ve read.

I’m not a fan of FCS games, but I’ll be in my seat to see Southern’s band on Saturday.

  15. Damn Senator, you got some old geezers posting on this blog if they remember Virginia beating the Dawgs in Sanford stadium and Leonard’s Losers …o wait….never mind.
I saw “son of shoe string” at the Cotton bowl too…it sucked. Gurkha is exactly right the Razorbacks were clueless about JB.
