“I speak the truth, and the truth of the matter is we’re a good football team.”

Booch has a simple message for the troops:  ignore reality.

For the fourth time in seven football seasons, Tennessee is 2-3.

The Volunteers had the same record through five games in 2009, 2010 and last season, and while they rallied on the easier back halves of those schedules, there’s a different feeling around this one.

Letting two-score leads slip away in the losses by a combined 12 points probably has something to do with that.

Who you gonna believe, your coach or that losing record?

“I want our players to understand,” he added, “that we’re a good football team.”

Is that the case, though?

Tennessee ranks last in the SEC in total defense (414 yards per game) and 12th in the league in scoring defense (24.6 points allowed per game). Big plays are a reason why. The Vols have allowed 23 plays of 20-plus yards, the second-most in the SEC, and 14 plays of 30-plus yards and nine plays for 40-plus yards, both SEC-worst totals.

Offensively, Tennessee is one-dimensional. If opponents can slow running backs Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara and contain quarterback Josh Dobbs and force Tennessee to throw, the Vols struggle to move the ball through the air. Dobbs is 10th in the SEC in passing efficiency, and the receivers have been injured, underwhelming or both.

None of which is to say – before some of you go there – that Tennessee can’t win on Saturday.  Of course the Vols could.  But compare Jones’ smoke blowing to Richt’s acknowledgement of Georgia laying a large egg against Alabama.

It’ll be interesting to see which approach serves the respective teams better.

I don’t think the UGA fans care anymore. Did you see the walkout protest in the 3rd quarter? They are tired of not winning Championships, it’s been a long time. And they feel powerless because the Admin doesn’t care either as long as the money shows up.

Insight #1: When you havn’t won at least a conference Championship since 2005, players, admin and fans start to expect underachievement.

      • Well the Dawgs won the East several times in the last 10 years. When has Ole Miss won it’s division? Or Missy State? Or UTsince ‘ 07? Or SC (once in 20 years)? You gloss over that Georgia has at least player for the SEC championship on a somewhat regular basis. We can still get back to Atlanta this year, too and win.

For a myriad of reasons, the best thing Richt and the team could do this weekend is really put a number on UT. We’ll see. UT has zero chance for success if they can’t recruit Georgia, every UT coach will have his team ready to play us.

    • DawgTyme

That will not happen. Richt barely beat UT by 3 points with AM & Mason. What does Richt do now that he realizes he has the worst big game Qb’s in the country? I guess just go for 10 wins. It’s the Georgia way.

A way to measure progress when you’re coming out a hole as deep as Butch had at TN is look at scoring margins year to year. Just like Alabama 2007, you can be a good team and a great coach, and lose a bunch of games because you don’t believe in yourself yet.

Butch did is at Central Michigan and Cincy, he’s doing it again at UT.

How’s that scoring margin theory working out for Arkansas? He’s in his third year. Saban was in his first in 2007. This should be a year where their recruiting starts paying dividends, and they’re going to go 6-6 again.

Insight #4: Like Saban in 2007, Butch Jones is losing barely AND INCREASING WIN TOTALS at the same time from year to year. Had a +2 in win total from 2013 to 2014. That’s how you measure progress at program you are building from the ashes.

I agree, Richt seems to have no fire, like he wants to be a missionary instead of a football coach. I think he’s in the wrong field. He’s too sweet to be in a competitive sport. Alabama showed that in a big way.

You look at Urban, Nick, they hate to lose. They are obsessed with being Champions.

Richt just wants to win 10 games.

^^^ This argument is so tired…. and even more retarded. You’re absolutely right, Richt purposefully blows 2 games every year because he doesn’t want to win championships.

Insight #3: Does Richt expect to win Championships? if so, look at this Qb position. Lambert & Ramsey proved they cannot beat Alabama. So, if Richt thinks he can win out and get to Atlanta, then he’ll need a new Qb to beat Alabama. So switch to Bauta and give them a mobile Qb which has caused Alabama all kind of issues. That’s what you do if you want to win a Championship in 2015.

If Bauta was any better than the other two… I think he would have sniffed the field by now. Thats always the argument, the backup or in this case “3rd string” QB is the best one on the team. Just wow.

We just don’t know that, but I am pretty convinced the 3rd team QB we had, is now the 2nd team QB. He has a different style, that alone makes him worth a look, imo. We need someone ready to come in in case Lambert goes down, I think Ramsey has had hos opportunity to move up, or to maintain his backup position. He has had that status for a season and a half, plus a spring and fall camp. How much more do we need to know? Bauta at least deserves some reps to audition for the role. From everything we have heard, he is well prepared and is capable of short to medium throws which we seem able to live off of.

If I am any other coach playing against GA, I would throw the kitchen sink in the first quarter hoping to break the dawgs’ spirit. It doesn’t take much more than 2 tds for the coaches to start giving up on drives…

True, the book says get a 3 td lead on UGA and they give up.

UT pushed UGA to OT in 2013, lost by a field goal, and lost by a field goal again in 2014.

Been close, been knocking on the door.

With UGA down this year and not remotely competing against the only good team they faced, look for UT to get a big lead and UGA to quit again.

Insight #2: I think it takes more than a Qb, great defense, solid special teams help. The Qb will have offdays, the other phases of the team have to adjust when that happens. It’s been a while since UGA had a truly great defense. Pruitt looks the part, his defense finished #1 in scoring in the SEC against ranked teams in 2014. Need to take more chances on special teams, fake punts, onside kicks, etc in a game where the Qb’s are struggling.

Richt couldn’t spin it, he got blownout, when you get crushed by 28, and never led the game, there’s no way anyone will believe you were even in that game. Butch has a very easy pitch to his team, we led every team we played by 13 or 14. Nobody has beat us without taking 2 overtimes, a last minutes 4th and 18 conversion, or a called back punt return. They got lucky. We’re competing, we’re close, we’re leading, we’ve been the better team/

We’re like Alabama in 2007, competing, but barely losing games. Hang in there, The pot of Gold is coming very soon.

What does Richt say in a 38-10 blowout where he never led and his guys just didn’t even play hard. I have no idea.

Tennessee is a good football team with a fatal flaw – the passing game.

However, it is a flaw we are not yet prepared to take advantage of – on offense or defense.

Also, Tennessee is solid on special teams.

I think we can take advantage of their pass defense, i expect Lambert to have a big bounce back. But my biggest fear is our pass defense will be a tonic for their passing game woes. We have to use those talentedpass rushers to protect our overage guys.

UGA may be the only fan base that wants their coach to act like a complete immature fool throwing a tantrum. Mirroring the low end of our supporters isn’t the answer, if it is we should definitely brought in Boom or Sgt Carter. Where do these nutcases come from? And who seriously thinks CMR doesn’t have fire?

When I was a middle manager I know I would have felt great about seeing my company’s senior leadership ranting, raving, and cursing every time we faced any unpleasant circumstances, or lost a customer, or saw our competitors do something well. Would this behavior have inspired confidence among all of us about our future? Just the kind of leader every one wants and trusts, right? But that is what some are begging for. I know I would been doing a lot of interviewing looking for a new future and getting away from the disaster that would follow.

No doubt they will load up to stop the run and we will have to show we’re physical enough to beat press coverage to keep them honest.

Ultimately I like our running game depth vs their front seven if we can keep the game close as long as it is not their front eight.

Losing Maggitt brings depth and leadership issues in the second half.

I’d love to see us line up and sweep left, sweep right, and pound it up the middle, a la Dooley and Herschel. Yeah, we don’t have Herschel’s OL, but our line isn’t bad. Also, we need to rotate backs more often, or put them both on the field. Every time Chubb or Michel break a long run, we immediately go hurry up with the same guy again. They can barely get their breath and we’re asking them to do it again. That’s a definite tendency that I’ve seen, and I’m sure other coaches have seen it as well.

When the ladies [referring to the article by the Lady Sportswriter] girls say “they quit” you know it is bad. That is coachspeak for CMR getting his ass kicked again.
Coachspeak is not all for call in shows or post game comments, well at least not Saban, is what they don’t say on the sidelines during the game when you do not execute. During the Bama game a receiver asked the QB what did CMR say about the ball dropping out of your hand for the second time. He say nothing, so I guess it is alright. Most be so because Brice is going in, he can throw a wet ball. How do you know that. Hell he has throw several in the showers because he can not start.
Best coachspeak and writerspeak is that famous comment “after to review the film”. Damn stupid, nobody uses film anymore, well maybe at UGA school of journalism and athletic department. Here is a clue, go to any 6A high school game and see what they are doing on the sideline. Those coaches are watching both sides of the LOS and walking to the players on the bench. Jeremy Pruitt’s former Hoover High School head coach made the comment if you make half time adjustments you could be two games behind schedule.
    It is all a hoot!
