Run the damn ball, Schotty.

Nick Chubb for offensive coordinator!

“I know I wanted to run the ball more ‘cause our passing game just wasn’t in rhythm,” said Chubb, who ran for 146 yards to tie Herschel Walker’s streak of 13 consecutive 100-yard game. “It would’ve been great to run the ball because things were actually starting to open up. If we could have threw the ball off running the ball we could’ve had a better passing game.”

Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer did not disagree. He said the game plan was to test Bama’s beefy defense on the edges rather than run straight into its four-man front of 300-pound defensive linemen. But Georgia’s backs could never get turned up field as linebacker Reggie Ragland and defensive back Geno Smith racked up tackles on the perimeter.

“We wanted to test the edges,” Schottenheimer said after the Bulldogs practiced Tuesday. “They’re big, strong physical guys. But we probably did it a few times too often, to tell you the truth. A couple of times they ran through from the back side. I think we probably could’ve got to it a little bit earlier. That’s obviously on me. … They did a good job defending it.”

I guess we shouldn’t expect them to make the same mistake twice.  And judging from the stats, that makes complete sense.  Tennessee is eleventh in the conference in rushing defense.  Establishing the run to set up the pass, Georgia’s modus operandi, should be the rule of the day, as the Vols are an even worse thirteenth in passing defense.

Are you being sarcastic? I can’t speak for the rest of our fanbase, but I was having flashbacks of Bobo and that dang draw play up the middle on 3rd and long.

Maybe someone that had he stomach to rewatch the game can answer, but it seemed to me that we had more success running right behind G-C-G and the pure toss sweeps than we did handing it off and trying to get off tackle. Is that what Schotty is driving at? I think part of everyone’s frustration is the feeling that we got beat using our second best pitch.

My admittedly untrained eye didn’t see us attack the edges at all. I was screaming for toss sweeps. When we finally did one sometime in the third, I think, Sony got like 11 yards. Frustrating.

Still say we need to develop more plays that put Michel and Chubb in the back field together. Michel is built for the toss sweep and chubb can do both the toss sweep and up the gut well. Michel is not bad up the gut either.

I’m surprised they haven’t run any direct snap plays to Chubb or Michel. I keep thinking about Gurley running in untouched in the Cap One Bowl against Nebraska.

My guess is that if MacKenzie is out…Sony will line up in his slot position this weekend and run a few jet sweep looks. I believe they did that against Clemson last year with some success.

+100. It seems so obvious to me. But then, I’ve never been in the arena.

Preach it! I thought or hoped Schotty was hiding that leading up to the Bama game but we don’t seem to have it or want to use it very much. I thought we might see Sony in the slot some as well since apparently MM is the only developed play maker at WR. I think we have some young talent at WR but they need time to become something the defense has to seriously worry about.

I’d like to see Bauta on fourth and short package with some kind of run pass option. Think he could be tough in that one situation. Would also like to see Sony used more when they are stopping Chubb. I think you have to run out of passing formations on Alabama.

Same here. Even down 28 – 3, you have to start the comeback somewhere and that looked to be with letting a really angry Nick Chubb loose. Sure enough, he busts one (fine, Bama was asleep, whatever) but as I’ve posted from game day on…I would have just grinded the ground game to see if we could wear them out a little, get within 14 with at least a couple of minutes on the clock, keep the D inspired, and make something out of it. Ramsey tossing a pick 6 and trying to re-establish GL throwing short passes was just not the way to go IMHO.

Hearing Schottie confess his sins does little to improve my confidence in him. I’ll say this…I think the 2014 edition of Bobo would have run the ball more and being up in the box might have helped Schottie see the line play and make adjustments to our blocking schemes.

Eh…hopefully lesson learned and Bama is in the books. Move on.

I didn’t see a concerted effort to test Bama’s edges. Looked like a lot of running between the tackles. Of course, I’ve never been in the arena.

He meant he had those plays listed as possibilities to run. Instead chose to go with pass, pass, pass to make 3 incompletions and put the D right back out there.

Running game out of shotgun develops too slow IMO. No run threat from QB kills that whole scheme.

I was completely over the loss, moved on. Don’t care about the bauta this and bauta that camp. Simply ready for Tennessee.

A wet muddy field nullifies speed advantage on the edges.

We knew the weather conditions all week.

That explanation doesn’t hold water. 🙂

Didn’t see anything opening up except the gashes UA was inflicting on our offense. We weren’t going to run on them – I meaning we had 20+ attempts for what, 2.2 per carry before Chubb’s long run? Or something like that….

Come on! Where’s your inner couch based offensive coordinating expertise? Everybody knows the way you beat Alabama is running the ball gah! We all know that the coaches blew that game beginning with not telling 11 that accuracy was important when 26 is three steps wide open. It all went downhill from there. That’s just coaching right there! Kiffin coached Coker up to be accurate when the wr was open. Schotty told 11 to let them hit the ground.

Thing is, we we’re only gettin 3 yards a carry from Chubb all but a few carries. If he was poppin for 5 or 6, maybe you call more run plays.

I think Chubb gets stronger as the game wears on and even the “Great” Alabama would get tired of tackling him. Mizzou last year he ran 35 times, his ypc was 3.8 with a long of 18. He punished guys all day long. I want to see more of that. 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

The teams that have beaten Alabama, usually did it passing, with perimeter runs, so I don’t blame CBS too much for trying that stratergy. In hindsight, just weather-wise, probably wasn’t the best conditions to play Alabama because the weather took out our strengths. Backs couldn’t make cuts on the perimeter in the wet grass, and had a tougher time throwing and catching. Like to see a rematch in the Dome, weather taken out of equation, really would. Think we get a different outcome. Think the weather really screwed the game plan. Give Alabama credit, they had a weather oriented game plan, but I don’t know if you can beat Alabama just running the ball up the middle every play. I don’t fault CBS.

You mean 3 runs and a punt?

  10. Exactly and his long td run came against a backup D. Of course, we did run between the tackles more than normal, which is running into the heart of their D. Maybe it was because of the weather but we didn’t try much outside/in space like we usually do.

We’ve always been good at passing to set up the run, so I liked that strategy, but our QB situation…ugh. The running game may be our strength but this offense goes nowhere without good QB play.

Actually, the long run came against their #1 defense. You can say they may have let down but it only required one Bama defender to get walled off, and one solid block at the point of attack. Same with what happened to Ganus on Henry’s run. I agree the weather limited us and running between the tackles is a tough proposition against Bama’s front group. I also didn’t see more one attempt to get wide with a run, and we missed the short passes that we tried. Just a horrible day all around for the Red and Black. They aren’t 4 TDs better, but with 4 turnovers they probably are. Have to tip your cap to the effort they got out of their key players.

The hawgs padded the Vols rushing defense.
Not sure our O line and running game is there yet.
We can not pass because we do not have the personnel or package.
Lambert put two balls on the ground just trying to throw the wet ball. Chubby is watching all that and his OC on the sidelines, and saying what the freaking hell game plan is this.

See where CMR says GL is holding on to the ball.
Why did it take him so long to come to that.

Think holding on to the ball will be difficult for GL to break this habit.
What would help would be some sets or formations.

Over on the rivals site, Smallwood had about still shots on passes that went incomplete or GL ended keeping it and running showing open wideouts. Problem was that none of them were his primary WR which he locked on. If he goes through his progressions, the day would’ve been a little better.
