What we learned on our bye week

Just a few random impressions from a Dawgless Saturday:

  • The ACC is left with Clemson holding the banner for its national title hopes.  Maybe this will be that year.
  • Al Golden is toast.
  • Speaking of national title hopes, the Pac-12 has to be wishing for a heckuva lot more undefeated teams going down in the next few weeks.  (There are still twelve BCS teams without a loss, but several of those aren’t in P5 conferences.)
  • The SEC East is a two-team race, and I think we can safely say Missouri isn’t a part of that.
  • The West is now a three-team race.  The irony there is the team most of us think is the best is the only one not in control of its destiny.
  • Can anybody explain Ole Miss’ season?  I can’t.
  • And Gus takes the lead in the most overpaid coach in the SEC West race.

Interesting stat from the Wedding Planners vs the Hillbillies game:
    24 commercial breaks
    136 total commercials aired
    5.7 average commercials per break
50 mins and 5 seconds of commercial airtime
average commercial break 2 mins 15 seconds

Damn that’s literally almost 1 min of commercials per minute of game time.

And the ESPN talking head two weeks ago suggested we allow play clock to continue to run after 1st down plays, and out of bounds plays because games are running too long. How about doubling the cost of commercial per minute and cutting the number of them in half? Nah, let’s give the fans less for their money.

If we lose in jax, fu has the division title locked up. By a first year coach and before the end of October.

    • Technically, ON the end of October. I mean, I guess it depends on the duration of the game… a 17OT game may stretch into Nov1.

So… uhhh… with only one third of the season left, right? Why/how is that remarkable?

What’s “remarkable” is the suckitude of the sec east teams. Mark 2015 down as yet another year the division title was there for the taking.

For those who angst about finding a replacement for CMR, take a look at what first year HC McElwain has done with what some people considered a laughably poor team.

I see this as a watershed game for CMR. Is it too much to expect him to win in jax and make a legit run for the division title? Then wtf do we keep him for? Is he a swaddling blanket for a school scared shit of making a change, or the HC that’s gonna lead us to bigger and better things?

        • Oh boy. Can’t you tell that they are out in force this morning Cobb? Al Golden getting spanked by Clemson in front of empty stands plus Fishfry pulling the upset over FSU over a special teams gaff has given them all of the fuel they needed to defend Richt today. Good luck!

Observing that there’s nothing “remarkable” about having a division title sealed up after 2/3rds of the way into a 12-game college football season has nothing to do with defending Richt. But everything looks like a rusty nail to a blunt hammer. So, hey, I ain’t mad atcha.

Look, everyone gets that you guys have an irrational hatred of our coach. And, yes, it’s obvious that your hatred is rooted in the same kind of daddy-issues that saddle y’all with wild fits of situational penis-envy of other fanbases. But, futile as this may be, I’m going to ask this of y’all anyway…

I know this will strain your limits. I know this will be really, really hard for y’all because you have so much emotionally invested in Richt being shown the door. But, can you at least try to pretend that Saturday’s game hasn’t been played yet? How about this for a compromise: even if we win on Saturday, you can still console yourselves with the certainty that we’ll lose to Kentucky and/or Auburn. And if that doesn’t come to pass, then you can take heart in our being blown out in the SEC Championship game. There’s always hope, amirite!

            Think on it!

          Yes, good point.

McElwain has started his SEC coaching career just like Will Muschamp and Gus Malzahn.
There can be nothing but clear sailing from here.

    Let’s see…..

According to some of our posters here even though Georgia didn’t play yesterday:

    Richt sucks
    Pruitt sucks
    Schotty sucks
    Lambert sucks
We have the chance to “back into” a division title
We have no chance against FU
    We are “settling for mediocrity”
    Richt sucks

    Did I miss anything?

  7. Gus Malzahn has led Auburn to the bottom of the SEC standings. It is tied for last in SEC wins with Vandy and SC. Over its last 12 games (I used 12 games because it is the length of a season) Gus is 5-7. Had he not driven the Bus to a brilliant comeback, OT win over Jacksonville State he would be batting .333 (4-8). Let’s look at the last 8 conference games, which is a full conference season. Gus is 2-6.

Gus’s only hope is that some SEC team kicks an athlete off its team for theft.

To be fair, he coaches in the West. Throw in Vandy and Kentucky and the rest instead of Bama and LSU every year, and Gus would look a lot better.

Auburn played Kentucky this year and barely held on to win.

      • To be fair, Gus has the worst record of any of the west teams over the last 8 SEC games, and one of Gus’s two SEC wins was over Kentucky.

Yes, playing Kentucky helped. I bet he wishes he could play Vandy and Mizzou as well.

        • And, even if Gus could trade a loss to Alabama for a win over Vandy he still would be 3-5 in SEC games in a season’s worth of SEC games.

USC, Vandy, and Mizzou are all worse than Kentucky, whom Auburn has already beaten. That’s four wins right there, even if they won no more. Auburn looks worse because of their schedule, but they would do much better in the East, IMO.

            • We are not discussing hypotheticals. We are talking about Gus’s actual, on field results. He is last in the SEC West. Measured against his West Division peers, he is in last place and has the 7th best best West division record over the last 8 SEC games. If Saban played Vandy 7 times and Gus once, Gus’s record would still be 2-6.

I hate auburn. But they’ve made it to the national title game twice recently playing in the toughest division in cfb. And with a HC who’s lost to UCF, colorado, vandy, ky, etc., we’re in no position to point fingers. IF we’re a better team than them right now, I’m not sure the gap between teams is all that. But hey, laughing at the other guy’s problems is better than dwelling on our own.

seriously…when you can’t mock Auburn for losing and not have it turn into a Richt sucks comment we might all just need to take a step back.

Auburn is losing a lot. that is great. I hope we give em one more loss, but auburn losing is always a win.

look Scalawag…I never suggested the other conferences could not be discussed, or that they are not discussed, I just wondered why a Scalawag who obviously wants to be part of the fan base of an SEC team would want to broadcast his roots with a handle that ascribes him to a bottom-feeder Big Ten program?

Seems a valid question to me. When you Figg er it out, share.

After being here as long as I have I would never compare the B1G to the SEC as far as football. In my mind there is no contest between the two for a number of factors. That doesn’t mean I don’t follow the team I grew up with good or bad. If you can’t understand that I don’t think anything I could say would matter. Frankly I don’t give a damn.
