Never forget.

You know Corch won’t.

It’ll always be a big deal.

Can we do this when we score 1st on Alabama in the SEC Championship this year, since Saban was still throwing late in the 4th? huh? can we?

We should do it again this year.

Hindsight being 20/20, this was like buying a mansion on credit. Sure, it was fun in the short term (stomping UF/Tebow and then proceeding to run the table the rest of the year), but the bills never stopped coming due from it in the form of 2 more ass whippings at the hands of Meyer and years of personal retribution from Penn Wagers. I bet Penn still rages about this daily.

Isn’t the series about even since then? Was it even the 7 years or so before then…?

Yes, but given that we lost 3 more times in between the celebration and our next win (with 2 being a curbstomping), I don’t think it had anything to do with the celebration. Had we reeled off 2 of the next 3 or at least won back-to-back then sure, that could be an argument.

My main thing though was the refereeing. We were paid back in spades for this stunt, starting with a wide gap in penalty yardage in the blackout AU game (98 yards for us to their 29) and continuing right on up until:

I think you are right Money. We definitely haven’t caught (m)any breaks from the stripes since then. It does seem to have died down since Wagers was shown the door,

That gif right there is probably the maddest I have ever gotten from an official in my entire life. Wagers made it a point to go BACK and engage Richt after right had disengaged him and threw a flag literally AFTER Richt was walking back towards the sideline. Richt must’ve said something about his mother there. That was the only explanation.

Yes but you can’t simply look at pre and post celebration records, as the UF program has been a borderline dumpster fire since Meyer left. UF in, say, ’06 or ’08 compared to, say, ’13 or ’14, are totally at opposite ends of the spectrum.

This is absolutely true. I love the analogy of buying the mansion on credit (then bragging to friends/neighbors about it).

That was my last WLOCP as well, and it was one hell of a trip. 188 yds and 3 TDs from Moreno, defense played great and the game was not as close as the final score. I was hoping to make it this year but have family obligations this weekend.

I was there too the atmosphere was electric after that. The best feeling was riding the bus back to the parking lot with all the deflate fans who had been crowing about whipping us on the way there.

I was in the lower NE corner of the endzone, it was almost right in front of me. What a freakin’ game that was! I remember Thomas Brown was hurt and we were leaning heavy on Knowshon, the fan behind me kept calling for Caleb King to get in the game, I was like, “Who’s that?” The guy says he’s our 5* freshman stud, even better than Knowshon he says (if only); thankfully the TV timeouts gave Knowshon enough rest that we didn’t have to put Caleb in. Wish I was going this year, can’t miss Halloween with the kids (priorities FTW).

I thought Caleb’s first year was a wash due to him breaking his leg during his senior season? So I’m not even sure if Caleb would have even been an option if we needed him.

You might be right, the guy behind me was sure he was available to play. I laugh now at the fact I didn’t even know who he was. Ahhh, the blissful unawareness I had before recruiting became the second sport I followed.

According to Caleb he dressed and was told he would be going in the next series several times but the TV timeouts gave Knowshon enough rest to play almost the whole game. Really wouldn’t have mattered if we burned his redshirt there since he didn’t stay around for his SR season

            • simpl_matter

That’s what I thought Rocket. Definitely wouldn’t have hurt anybody burning his shirt. Caleb was going to play his senior year but he didn’t keep his grades up.

Neither have the SEC refs…they, apparently, took it as more of a slap in the face than Urby did! UGA has suffered ever since

What I remember from this game, aside from the celebration and the beautiful TD pass and catch to Massaquoi, was how they intercepted a Stafford pass for a TD and made it a close game. It was a fluke play but we didn’t quit — we fought very hard that day. Specifically, our defense forced turnovers and got after tebow’s ass all day long. That was the difference in the game.

I don’t know if the refs are still making UGA pay for it, but they damn sure did for a while. That 2008 WLOCP was the most blatently one-sided officiating I’ve ever seen. Florida’s DB and WR mauled us on the perimeter with nary a flag thrown. Plus the interception they overturned, plus Spikes taunting they didn’t call on the first play of the game. Penn Wagers meant we were going to pay.

Perhaps the most misunderstood, and overblown event in series history. Was a good idea that simply got out of hand because bench players weren’t invited. Did not deserve 30 yards in penalties, officials are supposed to hold their emotions in check aren’t they? Certainly did not justify the obsession Penn and Urbie have adopted.

I can see I’m in the minority here, but I thought it was dumb as hell then and my opinion of it hasn’t improved over time. It was “fake juice” to the 2nd or 3rd power.

i agree. When the coach has to tell you to get excited, in Jacksonville no less, something is wrong. The issue EVERY year ought to be keeping the players calm. No one should have to tell them to celebrate. This crap cost us dearly over the years. Like the A.J. Green pointing penalty. If he were honest, I suspect even Mark Richt would say he regrets having instigated this.

Seriously. The A.J. Green was call was TOTAL bullshit

I would agree with both if you if the intent was to stimulate “fake juice” I don’t think it was. I feel Richt thought the team was catching major grief, and the game seemed to have them tight and not able to enjoy the good things. I feel he wanted to step out of the box and say to them, “enjoy the time and I don’t care if it costs us a penalty,, in fact it had better cost us one”. Remember, this was at a time when every little move was penalized by over zealous refs,, except for gator chomp like taunting. But I agree with Paul, I think he regrets what it came to be and how it is now regarded. I think it was innocent and got characterized as evil and reckless. I know what he was trying to do, faced something similar in my professional career, but I also regret it now….but only because of how it is perceived, not what it was.

Yep. My recollection was that it was supposed to be just the players on the field to celebrate. You can even tell that Richt at the halftime interview hadn’t planned it to go that far. I had heard that they were going to line up and “pose” for a picture (I think I even saw a random picture somewhere of a single OL taking a picture of another player kneeling down) but the whole team took Richt’s words as an invitation to bum rush the field.

Of course, you can’t explain that to anyone.

This amazing thing is we didn’t lose the game after the field rush. If we did that now we’d get beat 56-7, or worse.

The pass rush that day would have eaten Tebow’s slow ass release alive regardless. That 07 Florida team lost 4 games. They just weren’t as good as everyone thought going into that game.
