Actually you are soooo very right, BJ. But they are deeper than CMR and Schotty, too. CMR is a symptom–not the disease. The disease is that group of archaic assholes who run B-M which includes the AB and the old geezer alumni behind the scenes. My Brother-in-Law, the Mayor of Tideville, explained to me how Bama turned it around and it wasn’t just by hiring Saban. The Bama administration got rid of those old curmudgeon hangers-on who were secretly behind the decision making about Bama athletics. They actually ran off Gene Stallings even though he won a NC because he wasn’t a “Bama guy” and sent the program into a spiral downward. Saban made it a condition of taking the Bama job that those guys had to go. We have the same problem. We desperately need a complete housecleaning at the B-M and the AB/alumni levels.

Mayor, while this very well may be the problem, the question is how to clean up this mess in B-M. And Richt is a large part of the problem. Unfortunately, Richt is not going anywhere any time soon. We are watching this program return to the days of Donnan, if not worse.
LikeLike
No, no, no, no, no, no, nooooo. Donnan was actually a good coach, at least as far as recruiting and Xs and Os. An asshole, but a good coach. He had about the same winning percentage for his last 4 years in Athens that Richt has. Donnan’s problem was that Georgia’s rivals were also coached by good coaches while Donnan was there and he lost to Auburn, FU, UT and Tech too much. The coaches who were at Auburn, UT and Tech during Richt’s tenure have been pretty bad–hence Georgia’s winning record over them. Guys like SOD, Fishfry, Cheatsatit and Boom. Only FU has had good coaches consistently while CMR has been at Georgia–except for Boom. That is why CMR is 5-10 against FU. Three wins against the incompetent Boom and 1 win each against Zook and Meyer. Hell, Zook wasn’t even a good coach, too. My point is that CMR looks better than he really is because of the lousy competition from our traditional rivals. When they wake up and hire coaches that are first rate (like FU appears to already have done) we will be in a world of hurt.

I left out some of the other bad coaches. Remember Chantastic Gailey? Lou “Granny” Holtz? In spite of the one year rabbit’s foot Gus Malzahn is looking a lot like a bad hire these days. I could go on but……

Mayor, Donnan wasn’t a good coach. He was an upgrade from One Play Away Ray. He was a good recruiter … I will give you that. Also, he was a major league a$$.
’96 – I give him a pass for dealing with the aftermath of the Goff era
’97 – Sure we finished in the top 10, but he pi$$ed away his chance with the face plant at home against Auburn right after beating Florida.
’98 – Started fast with QC and then fell flat on his face losing to UF and tech
’99 – Lost to all of the Big 3 including one of the most embarrassing home losses to Auburn
’00 – Lost to all of the Big 3 again including being down 34-0 to tech at home at halftime. On his tombstone, it will read “I’ve waited 55 years to coach a team like this.”
LikeLike
You just made my point ee. Look at the schedule results. 1997 Donnan was 10-2 with losses against a Fulmer coached UT and a Tuberville coached Auburn, but beat every other team including Wisky in a bowl. 1998 he was 9-3 with losses to 13-0 UT, 10-2 FU and 10-2 Georgia Tech. That season he beat LSU, Ole Miss and Auburn. In 1999 his team finished 8-4 with losses to UT, FU, Auburn and Tech. 2000 was just about the same with the Dawgs finishing 8-4 with losses to South Carolina, FU, Auburn and Tech–all of which had good seasons that year. My point is that Donnan wasn’t a bad coach and IMHO CMR wasn’t really an upgrade over Donnan. Our rivals, particularly Tech, UT and Auburn, made bad HC hires and became easier to beat. That’s why CMR has a good record against them. CMR’s best season was 2002 (13-1) and the whole team was made up of Donnan’s players. I think everything that happened good for Georgia in the early 2000s would still have happened if Donnan was HC. But Donnan was such an ass he almost begged to be fired. Think about it–firing a guy who was 8-4 that year and 40-19 overall? They never would have done that to a popular coach. He got fired because he was a tool–not because he couldn’t coach.

Richt is very much the problem.
Offense and special teams lack intensity, focus, mental, and physical toughness.
Same mistakes on special teams, no on-field leadership on offense, an aloof disengaged head coach, and no life or excitement on the Georgia sideline for the most important game of the year.
None of these are new problems.

Why put the entire game and season solely on his arm? How many passes had he completed in his CAREER?

Do you think the learned barrister wouldn’t have attacked me because I pointed out that the hated sShotty called the play that I referenced, if my handle was different? Did Shotty not call the plays where Davis dropped passes in the Tennessee and FLA games? Would the outcome have been different if he had caught the ball.
LikeLike
Well, yes. If Davis had caught the pass at the goal line in the last minutes of the UT game, that would have tied the game and Georgia might have won the game in OT. And if Davis hadn’t mis-handled the punt and allowed a ST TD near the beginning of this game the Dawgs wouldn’t have been behind the 8-ball and the entire game might have been played differently from that point on–but probably it wouldn’t have effected the outcome. Thanks for answering my question. I myself have multiple degrees from different universities so I can relate.

Truthfully, if I am Jacob Eason’s dad I would NEVER allow my son to go to Georgia the way things are right now: An OL that doesn’t block, a non-existent running game, an OC/QB Coach who can’t coach or call plays effectively and a HC who looks and sounds like he doesn’t have a clue–not to mention Special Teams that put the team behind the 8 ball constantly. Most teams whether HS or college get better as the season progresses. This Georgia Bulldogs team gets worse as the season progresses. Just when you think they have bottomed out they reach a new low. We have 4 games left in the regular season: Kentucky, Auburn, Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech. I think it is probable that this Georgia team will not win another game this season and will not be bowl eligible.

I hope I’m wrong but if you can’t score TDs you can’t beat anybody and I do mean anybody. I’ve seen Auburn play and while they are not very good they will still score at least 14 points no matter how well the D plays. Same with UK and Tech. I don’t see the Georgia O that played in JAX scoring 2 TDs in a game against any major college team unless the other team’s D leaves the field. And Georgia Southern. They must all be salivating in Statesboro. This is their big chance to not only beat but also humiliate the Georgia Bulldogs. And remember–2 years ago they beat FU. It’s going to be a long next 4 weeks.

Actually, it is more likely that he will go to Cal or Stanford with USC a possibility. Frankly, I couldn’t believe he would ever go to Georgia in the first place. The distance from his home to Athens alone makes it unlikely he would ever really attend. Plus, the handwriting is on the wall for CMR. Dollars to doughnuts, even if Eason shows up in Athens, there will be a coaching change at HC before long. One way or the other CMR won’t be his HC very long. So if he is coming because of CMR he’s going to be disappointed.

This is a team the is not competitive and has no identity. They get behind and fold. The have no confidence in themselves or, apparently, their coaches. Sad. Frustrating. We all agreed a couple of weeks back that Richt won’t lose his job this year. But we wondered if the Tennessee game would eventually be the one we point to and say ‘that was the beginning of the end.’ I think, increasingly, the answer is yes. Yes it was. Personally I think Shotty is a bust. I’d be okay if we cut him loose tomorrow.

Yes. It did feel to me like we became resigned to the outcome. After the first quarter, it felt to me like a game we would only win if it was very low scoring. But I guess our D would have had to pitch a shut out to win this one.

Everybody has a-holes and everybody has what they think is expert opinions! Here’s mine: It’s not on Coach Richt for everything the whiners want to whine about! He knows it’s his responsibility to fix it, and if the recruits don’t read this bullshit you whiners are talking about we will have all the pieces that are needed to be where the elite teams are soon. We all want it now but life doesn’t work that way. It takes depth to be able to control both lines of scrimmage and it takes a QB who can hit his receivers, as long as the Offensive line can block for him and the running backs. With Chubb out, our backs can’t break the tackles to extend the plays.
Bottom line is support the team or go away and quit your bellyaching !!!
I hate losing as much as anybody, but you can believe so does the Coaches and Players!

Can I ask a question? Why does Tom Brady win with Charlie Weiss and josh McDaniel but our problem is coaching? It’s seem to me that good qbs do well irrespective of the coach and bad qbs do poorly irrespective of their coach. Before you say that it’s belichick, well vinny testaverde didn’t exactly light it up in Cleveland. Our qbs suck. That’s what schotty has to work with. Its no fun but that’s what it is. I know that CMR is supposed to recruit the players but park and Ramsey were not supposed to leave us where we are. Lots of other teams wanted those guys. This is a problem at knew position and its glaring. I can’t make a judgment about anything until I see a competent qb taking snaps. After all schotty coached 11 into 2 incompletions in two games and he’s awful. Terrible. Bauta took his job. Think about it.

It’s also possible that Schottenheimer broke the QB situation and the offense in general. We’ll probably know for sure next year, since what I want to happen won’t this season.

I agree our talent at QB sux, but Richt had Stafford and wet the bed just like tonight in 08. He’s had all levels of talent and in year 15 he is doing less with less than he did in 09. This program is what it is under him.
At the end of the day, CMR doesn’t believe winning at football is the most important thing in his career. His problem is that he is competing with several coaches that DO believe winning is the most important thing.

We’re not going to win anything this season. That is apparent. None of the QBs we have played so far this season are competent SEC QBs. I say go down the depth chart and give the kids a chance. Nick Robinson was Co-Offensive Player of the Year last year in California with Josh Rosen, who now is the starter at QB for UCLA. Sam Vaughn was a hell of a player in Florida 2 years ago. http://www.georgiadogs.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/sam_vaughn_913376.html What I have seen so far this season not only causes me to doubt Schotty’s and CMR’s coaching skills, I now doubt their evaluation skills as well.

LikeLike
Well, in fairness when he kicked the FG and then later the team got close to a TD it looked like a smart move. The game would have been a 10 point game with about 10 minutes left at that point. But the INT in the EZ occurred–end of that.

Take a look at the decline in the running game in last three SEC play.
Changed QBs.
Decline in TDs.
Eight defensive players on the line of scrimmage.
Unreal offensive sets.
Have not Richt say one thing about how to get it untracked.
Ten losses in fifteen years of coaching against gators.
Just how long will alums put up with this.

Bauta isn’t the problem. Richt has run the program into a ditch. We have less talent than we all thought. Our coaches aren’t great schematically. We have no mental toughness. It’s time to pull the plug on this thing.

In 15 years, he hasn’t won a National Championship, has only one a few SECs, can’t match ‘Bama, and loses games that he shouldn’t. Get rid of the bum!
Am I describing Richt now? Or Dooley at the same point in his career?
not saying we should or shouldn’t keep the coaches … just throwing some perspective out there
LikeLike
Dooley would never have been so nonchalant about special teams as Richt is.
LikeLike
Dooley never went ten years without a conference title. Trying to compare Richt favorably with Dooley is intellectually dishonest and a thoroughly debunked tactic of the Church of Richt.
LikeLike
Actually, I think that was more a case of comparing Dooley unfavorably to Richt. In year 15, Dooley was in a decade span where, yeah, he won 1 SEC title, but also went 2-5 in bowls. My point is that things look differently if you look at Vince’s record pre-1980. It was good, very good, but I doubt we’d put up a statue on campus if he had retired in ’79.
I’m not in the Church of Richt and I’m not saying we keep him. I think that directional kickoffs was the moment where a change was needed. But I also think that it’s “intellectually dishonest” to 1) talk as if he is one of the worst coaches we’ve had and 2) look at the history of our program with rose-colored glasses.
I’m fine with people calling for change. But some of the rhetoric needs to be toned down. I think we should be honest when we assess where we’ve been and where we are.

If the UF AD was at UGA would he fire CMR.
Probably would. But the current UGA AD would never entertain the thought. 10 losses to a team the Dawgs must beat to get the SEC never comes across the AD’s mind. Have to see that UF and UT are going to be better…perhaps even USC. But not UGA. Started the season a preason pick to win the East and number 7 in the polls. In less than thirty days they are gone from the picture.
It is not the money, the players, the alums, the fans, the recruiting base, or the players. It is simply Mark Richt. He can no longer get it done. He can not finish the drill. Heck he can not get the Dawgs thru October.
Many think UGA deserves a coach that can change the projectory of Florida’s dominance over us. CMR has had 15 years to do that. He has failed. There are no excuses or explanation.
Time to let him go and to make a change for better or worse becuase it can not stay like it is.
