Kentucky:  good for what ails ‘ya

That’s one way to minimize shaky quarterback play.

  1. I was going to say how surprised I was that this offensive game plan wasn’t implemented against UF, but really nothing surprises me anymore. Offense was serviceable today and the defense dominating. Well done Dawgs. So are we all positive Pruitt is gone after this year?

I am not surprised. Like the Louisville game, there was a sense of urgency in the football program to motivate and focus, or their jobs were at risk.

Unless there are more fireworks this week, I expect the same country club complacency to return.

The fact this motivation has to come from sources outside the football program is the root cause of our failure.

That would be really nice because that would mean wins over Auburn and Georgia Tech. What’s not to love about that?

Even at 10-3, this would be the worst UGA team ever under Richt. Worse than Cox’s year, and definitely worse than Murray’s freshman year.

All because of the QB position. Odd that two of the other best offensive minds, Spurrier and Malzahn, got bit by the same bug this year.

At this point I’ll be happy if Eason is even half what’s promised. Richt’s job likely depends on it.

I can certainly see why people are optimistic about Eason. I mean, we definitely didn’t underachieve while Stafford was here.

Our offense was great when Stafford was here. Our defense blew. People forget we came back and scored 30 points in the Bama Blackout game but Willie had already got his pants pulled down and spanked so bad in the first half it didn’t matter. That happened frequently in Willie’s tenure starting in the WV Sugar Bowl game. When you are 28-0 after four possessions you have to throw out your offensive game plan and throw every down. That’s a tough position to be in even with a Stafford or Murray. The great sadness of this year to me is that if we had a defense in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, or 2013 (pre-injuries) like we have this year that is well coached, consistently makes stops to start ballgames, does not give up a “letdown” TD anytime we get a double digit lead, and is capable of actually holding the other team to FG’s after a bad turnover, then we probably run the table in at least 2 of those years.

Agreed. If Georgia had this D in any of those years we would likely have won a BCSNC and certainly more SEC Championships.

I’m certainly not going to disagree with the claim that our defense was shit back then. But let’s not pretend the 2008 Bama game was only the defense’s fault. Despite an offense featuring Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno, A. J. Green, and Mohamed Massaquoi, our first 5 drives went a little like this:

            1st drive: 5 plays, 29 yards, punt
            2nd drive: 3 plays, 1 yard, punt
            3rd drive: 3 plays, 37 yards, fumble
            4th drive: 3 plays, 10 yards, punt
            5th drive: 5 plays, 22 yards, interception

And by the start of our next drive, we were already down 31-0. Yes, we scored 30 points in the 2nd half … mostly against Bama’s 2nd- and 3rd-stringers.

And to everyone saying some version of “Stafford didn’t have this defense”: well, “this defense” got run all over by Alabama this year, too. And then a week later, “this defense” gave up a 21-point lead against the Vols.

So you’ll just have to pardon those of us who don’t see any reason to think things are magically going to be different when Eason shows up. The track record of Georgia having incredibly talented rosters who consistently play beneath their talent-level is too long, too predictable, to think that it’s all-the-sudden going to be different next year.

Pruitt’s D has not shown that it can shut down a good well coached offense. Until he does he is just another mediocre coach and really has no team left on the schedule to prove he can do just that. But just wait til next year. sigh

              • You didn’t think the Gus Bus with Marshall was a well-coached offense? They put up 40+ on us the year before and put up 7 last year. We all know you want the entire athletic department cleaned out, but Pruitt has the defense going in the right direction.

In the annals of college football champions, the best of offenses typically struggle at least 1-2 games in the regular season. 2010 Auburn with Cam Newton had the best offense of any team I can remember in the last 20 years but even they only got 17 points against Mississippi State that year and got blanked in the first half against Alabama. For the most part betwen 2005 and 2013 is that our offense had to win all of our games, if we couldn’t score early and often, we lost, we did remarkably well with only half of a team. A lot of times when we could score 30-40 points we still loss. Your early drives you reference makes the point I was trying to make, we didn’t have a defense when Stafford was at UGA that allowed for any margin of error, if the offense sputtered at all, which all offenses, even the best do, we’d be down four touchdowns before we could blink our eyes. I don’t poo poo us coming back in that game, it takes a good team to rally for 30 points in the second half against anybody, we damn sure can’t do it this year. Also, there is all the difference in the world between this year’s defenses performance against Alabama and 2008. This year’s defense played very good, they stopped Alabama a lot early in the game, they just wore down physically, when the offense kept doing nothing. In 2008’s blackout game, Willie was severely outcoached.

I’ve been reading you for a lot of years, and over that time I have agreed with a lot of things you have said, but I just disagree that we underachieved offensively with Stafford, we underachieved as a team primarily because of our defense. If you want to blame Richt for hanging onto Willie Martinez too long, I think that’s the fairest criticism of Richt there is, he hung onto him way too long, but the man knows what to do with a good quarterback, unless everyone across the country is wrong about Eason, I expect us to be very good offensively with Eason by Year 2, the question is where will the defense be? If it’s as good as it is this year (and would be even better if Pruitt stays or if we get someone else who knows what they are doing), there will be no limit on the season we could have, if it’s a very average to bad defense (with a few hustlers like Jarvis Jones) again like Stafford and Murray were generally paired with, you’ll be lucky to be 11-2, 10-3, the fact that we won as many games as we did with those crappy defenses was a testament to how good Bobo was, that’s why the people that wanted to fire him (our good coordinator) always baffled me the most.

Pretty sure a few of those offensive lineman are now playing in the NFL (Boling, Jones, and Glenn). So, maybe your argument is that the OL, like Stafford, played beneath their talent level? Perhaps due to poor coaching?

And from where I’m standing, the jury’s still out on Sale’s coaching abilities.

    • WTF happened to Ramsey? Wasn’t he 4-6 when he was replaced for good by 1-7 Lambert? I get they weren’t throwing…but the ball gets there sooo much faster when Ramsey throws. I want to see them give Ramsey a whole game. Bad.

Also…why did we over pay for a horrendous Pro-Style NFL OC to run the Wildcat 50% of the time. To me…that is the same as the spread–except the defense knows exactly what is coming because of who is behind center.

      A win is a win, I guess.

If they still get rid of Pruitt after this, they really need to get rid of everyone, all the way up to McGarrity. Pruitt is the lone positive this year.

When you watch the replay, Lamont, look for the slow arching pass to the right sideline that could have been intercepted easily by a D that was on the ball. Ramsey had more than one before he flattened it out so that it could be knocked down. Not criticizing him, but you can’t use that logic else Lambert will start every game. Ramsey showed no zip on the ball. If you use that pass completion logic for Lambert, you should compensate for the on-target long passes he threw that were dropped.

If we don’t agree that Richt and Co should be choosing this week, then we didn’t learn a thing about the QBs this year. They are what Richt has been saying they were. I prefer that he continues to choose from what he sees in practice.

Glad to see the sturm and drang that made no sense begin to tone down.

Huge win over a powerhouse Kentucky program. And I like the innovative thinking on offense … hiking it directly to the RB again and again and again. I’m just spit-ballin’ here, but maybe, since we broke it out against Kentucky, we should call it the “Wildcat” offense. Just you wait. I bet it catches on. Schottenheimer’s a genius.

We left a few points on the board and our QB play was still pretty bad, but we found our running game and the defense was good again. I’ll take it over last month, at any rate.

UGA, Florida, Kentucky, Mizzou, and Vandy are lousy to downright terrible offensively this year. It seems like it’s been a while that so many SEC teams – and especially UGA and UF – have had so much trouble scoring. Subpar QB play seems to be the common denominator.

I haven’t found much support on my theory, but I don’t think Schotty called that game. At a minimum, Richt was strongly advising. Play calls made too much sense and had too much rhythm. The huddle gave Richt more time to get his feet back under him. That or I’m way off and It just gave Schotty more time to play call due to his lack of ability to call a more hurry up offense. Tin hat back off for the night.

  13. The problems aren’t (and won’t be) fixed over the next 2 months since we’re now bowl eligible. To grouse about a business-like performance today seems odd to me. The defense played solidly all day. Some of that was UK’s problems on offense. Some of it was our ability to change field position and keep the field tilted against them. When the bad play came (IMac’s fumble), the defense bowed its neck and forced a FG. The offense came back out and got into scoring position. Unfortunately, Morgan missed. The first possession of the 2nd half the defense got a big stop, and then the running game did the rest.

I’m seeing a revealing contrast in this comment thread.

So here’s a statement of fact: we won. Another statement of fact: winning is always, without exception, better than losing. Now reasonable people can differ over the nature of the win, how the team played and the coaches coached and so on. Football is a brutal and complex sport, so it’s always ripe for discussion.

But, here’s what gets me. AusDawg makes a completely non-controversial statement: “Let’s get to 10 – 3 without anymore drama like this week please.” You’d think that’s something that any Georgia fan could get behind. That’s better than 6-6, right? Hell, he’s not even making a prediction. It’s a simple declarative statement.

And this is what he gets in response: “10-3? Lol. Nothing like a win over a bad football team to rekindle the sunshine.”

No wonder the Senator is getting a little annoyed with the comments around here.

I don’t fault folks for being upset with the coaching. And even the most ardent supporter of Coach Richt would readily agree that there are deficiencies in the program right now. But that shouldn’t stop us from at least enjoying the win. Oh, and about wins…

One of the common cliches around these parts about the more… er… optimistic elements of the fan base is that for them any win is a cure-all for everything. They’ll just declare everything in the program is copacetic and spend the rest of the day picking daisies. Try as I might, I haven’t seen a single comment to that effect around here.

One thing that’s in abundance, though, is pissing and moaning. For as much as you guys bristle when folks call you out for your attitude after wins (when they do occur, amirite!?!!), you sure go out of your way to live up to the stereotype. For a group of folks who call themselves realists, that’s predictable and sad. If this sport, this team, makes you that miserable, why go to the trouble of watching the games? Why even bother indulging in internet pissing matches over it? Heck, why should I even waste my time asking?

Here’s why. I don’t know if any of y’all played football. If you did, whether you were good at it or not, you probably understand that it’s a violent, spiteful, complex, painful game. It’s not pleasant. That’s what makes it so rewarding, of course.

Put yourself in those guys’ pads. Would you rather be a human battering ram in front of fans who respect your efforts with at least a modicum of pleasure after a victory? Or would you rather beat the shit out of your body in front of a bunch of fairweather types who react to a win by nitpicking all the things you and your coaches don’t do, or the things you didn’t do earlier this season, or the things you haven’t done in awhile.

If I were in their pads, I’d tell you to go pound sand. But, I’m not. So, I’ll just settle on telling you to go pound sand.

But if you don’t think there are some insufferable assholes on your side of it, just read a random post by Derek. We all want the program to succeed. But there are assholes on both sides of this issue. I don’t care what the Senator does about the comments section. It is his blog and his decision. It doesn’t mean you are afraid of greatness. It means that you are afraid of being a 4th place east team. Don’t think it can’t happen. I didn’t tell anyone to kill themselves. I said that IF you thought that this wildcat offense would have worked vs. Alabama that the safest thing for the rest of us would be “voluntary attrition.” As far as I know, nobody fits the category. I am happy that no one has made the argument yet. To the extent that I saved myself from having to read anybody write “where was this when we played Alabama?” I’m glad I said it.

Moreover, the idea that the debate I’m saying is pro-Richt vs. anti-Richt is false. My point has been and remains that our qbs are fucking horrible. Our offense doesn’t function with awful qb play. We need a qb to make plays and protect the ball. No amount of coaching could turn these three into serviceable qbs. Against a bad team like uk you can literally take the ball out of the qbs hands and win. It doesn’t work with against good defensive fronts like Bama and UF. They force your qb to make plays and then we’re fucked bc our qbs can’t make plays. The problem is that too many people process that as being an apologist or whatever. I don’t care it’s just factual. If we had a qb we’d be going to Atlanta. I really believe that. To fire a coach because he’s had two years without a qb and the year before that everyone’s knees blew out seems irresponsible. We apparently have a good qb showing up. Fire CMR and he likely doesn’t show up. Then you’re asking a coach to win with these three stiffs and recruit a good qb for 2017. It’s stupid. It’s very stupid. It’s painfully stupid. Those who suggest that 1) good coaching could get production out of these guys and/or 2) losing is preferable because it forces CMR to be fired are beyond stupid. It’s an insult to stupid people to call those people stupid. Our qbs suck. CMR knows that. Schotty knows that. They aren’t going to come out and say it, but it’s true. If Eason thought that schotty and Richt were destroying qb talent, why would he want to come. How the fuck do you get the balls to say that YOU know qb coaching but Eason and his dad? Fools!

It just goes to show that stupid has no bounds.

I agree with some of what you say, but there is ZERO evidence that Schottenheimer can develop a Qb and that’s his primary job. Explain Bauta starting after not even taking a damn snap in ALL the prior games. Explain why Lambert can make mistake after mistake, but Ramsey can barely see the field. Explain why Schot calls the same WR stack play that requires Godwin to block. Why run short yardage with no lead fullback? I can go on and on…but there is a serious lack is smarts on the offensive staff and that shit falls on Richt. So does having three shitty Qb’s, too.

Godwin learning to block is something you learn in practice. Seriously, if he can’t block you don’t have his ass on the field to block. You don’t learn to do that is the UF Game. You just reinforce his stupid the offensive coaches appear. Same with Reggie dropping punts. The guy has a track record of doing it. Yet they trot him out there time after time. What does that say about accountability by the coaches on putting guys in position to succeed and help the team? Reggie fumbled the punt at UT before housing it. He can’t reliably field punts. Yet……That shit is poor coaching and decision making on the Head Coach.

I think playing Bauta was a message about playing the guys who were playing hard. I think that they figured Bauta wasn’t that much worse than the other 2 and giving him the start was a message that effort and competitiveness mattered to playing time. The idea that the offense was going to change dramatically was wrong simply because he isn’t that great an athlete. He could have helped his cause by tucking it a few more times though.

I’m having a hard time arguing with that. I also think their was a generic malaise of “we can’t win with this guy” through the team. Also understandable. So you start a popular guy whose rep is work, work, work and maybe you get people focused on work. I like the guy and have a good friend on the football staff. I wanted Richt to succeed, but he’s not in my estimation, and much of it is his own inability to inspire, be proactive, and generate intensity and excellence in all phases of the program. It’s simply time to call a spade a spade.

You are spot on with this. Also, I don’t care if a kid drops a sure TD, blows an easy kick, whiffs a block, whatever; there is NO EXCUSE EVER for booing a teenager or just beyond a teenager that loves his team and game enough to forego almost any sense of a normal life to give everything he has almost year round, missing holidays and breaks with his family, etc. to play the game for his school and fans. If you’re a fan, congratulate them on the win and get over yourself with the thinking you know everything and can say exactly what is right or wrong in a program. You know way less than you think. And, for the folks saying Pruitt will have a head job next year, that is highly unlikely if they do their due diligence. He is very good to excellent with a defense, but far from ready for everything else that comes with running a program.

If you think football at a power 5 conference is about a teenager loving the team and game enough to give up normal life, you aren’t watching the same game I am. The majority of players are about fame and the possibility of future fortunes. That’s why they leave after 3 years, take the easiest class load they possibly can and continually get in trouble with off the field incidents. They aren’t dedicated to the game or their team. That’s why you see crazy celebrations when “the team” is losing by 30 because its about the play the individual just made not about the team. Until these conferences are willing to give up on the multi-million dollar TV contracts, conference networks, and stadiums that sit 100K fans, it will only get worse. The players that are playing for the love of the game are those in IVY league schools that don’t have athletic scholarships.

Not saying they don’t like the game but different aspects of the game appeal to individuals. Unfortunately, work ethic is not the only thing that determines the on field results. Sometimes sheer athletic ability (God bless them as I never had it) out shines any amount of work someone can put in. However, I am not out until 3 AM during the week when I got to work (practice) the next day.

I think the majority of us feel this way. I don’t think the people who disagree with my point of view are stupid. However, I think all the name calling going on is stupid. I agree with the Senator. I don’t care who’s coaching, I will continue to go to games and support UGA because I love Georgia football and I respect the heart and guts it takes to go out there week after week. I get enjoyment supporting my team, good or bad. I don’t understand all the angst. I save all that for Obama, not my beloved Bulldogs.

Are there issues with the coaching & program? Yes. Should that, the hurling of insults, and ridiculous levels of negativity after a win consume blog threads? No. Some people need to take a night off from working in negative town for a change and actually enjoy life.

Defeating Kentucky sure beats the hell out of losing to them. Also, and I think it’ll be very tough, but beating Tech and Awbun can do wonders for your football disposition.

This theory isn’t crazy. Before I had to leave for a funeral in the 2Q (people shouldn’t marry or die in the fall), I spotted Richt noticeably in Schotty’s ear before the latter sent in a play call. That was the one time the camera was on him. How much more did that happen?

  20. So slightly off topic. Clemson just beat FSU and is now 9-0. If they make a run in the playoff or even win a natty does the term “Clemsoning” get replaced by “Georgiaing”? Of course according to Derek Dabo is a moron and the only thing separating the two programs is a QB.

    Like

    • This is Dabo’s last chance to win one. Remember, he said that if players got money beyond tuition, room and board he would quit college coaching and go back to high school coaching? So, if he is a man of his word he will be coaching 16 years olds next year.

Everybody said Dabo sucked. Now he’s number 1. Did he learn to coach or did he find a qb? Doesn’t matter what your answer is. If a dumbass can become a genius in the offseason why make coaching changes? If it’s about the qb why make a coaching change?

    • Dabo got much smarter after signing Deshaun Watson. The kid is a player I wish had come to Georgia.

    • In the off-season, CollegeFootballNews published a story suggesting this very thing–that Clemsoning wasn’t really an apt descriptive phrase, and that Georgiaing was the more accurate terminology. And that was BEFORE this season started. Pretty sure they are not disavowing this opinion at this time.

Twice, the Ole Miss bench runs on the field to celebrate victory.

Derek Dooley could not be reached for comment.

    • Yes, and the refs did not call a penalty on Ole Miss and Treadwell on the 4th and 25 conversion in OT. He ran off the bench and on to the field during the play. Had Arkansas not converted it should have had one more chance due to an illegal participation penalty on Ole Miss.

      Like

      • Umm, no. I’m guessing you didn’t know that Ole Miss has a defensive back #1, who was legally on the field during that play. That wasn’t Treadwell.

        • Umm, yes. I know Ole Miss has a DB who is number 1. And, um, I know that Ole Miss did not line its DB who wears number one on the sideline behind Arkansas’s backfield without his helmet on. The replay angle from behind the end zone shows a guy without a helmet wearing the number one leaving the bench and running onto the field as the tight end started to toss the ball backwards.

I try to call things as I see them and not get into personal attacks yet I’ve had them directed towards me and have bitten at the troll bait from time to time. We all need to remember that we are Georgia fans in the end. I remember when this blog was a startup and you and I were posting on the now defunct ABH forums. You’ve done an amazing job and even if I don’t agree with you always I’ve give this blog a lot of hits. I think both sides(mine included) need to chill with the personal stuff and attacks.

        • It’s not the attacks as much as it’s the whining. Georgia wins an SEC game by 24 points and all some of want to argue about is who’s meaner to whom. Christ, it’s boring.

The worst part is the underlying argument hasn’t changed and isn’t going to change. We know where all of you stand. Some of you need to take a breather if you can’t come up with something original to add.

We won and I hate to be That Guy, but: 4th and inches inside the Kentucky 5 against the 119th ranked team in opponent 4th down conversions, and we kick a FG. There’s conservative and then there’s raw, dumb, animal fear.

I was at the game. Did anyone else notice that we had Malcolm Mitchell out wide on the hash in one on one coverage with no safety help multiple times, and failed to throw down the field to him? I am talking about the safety was cheated way over to the middle where he could never recover to help a beat corner. I was thinking, if I am the quarterback, I just tell Malcolm, ‘I am throwing to a spot 35 yards down the field. The spot we worked on in practice. At that spot it will be you catching the ball or over your head and the defender’s head.’ And that NEVER happened……..Wait, OK, never mind, I just DREAMED we have a quarterback that can make that throw. Which leads me to……….how in the world can you be recruited to play at Georgia and not have the arm to make that kind of throw? I am not talking a Stafford-like cannon, just a serviceable, D1, SEC type of arm that can execute a stock play like that. Either that, or Schottenheimer is proving again how much of a moron he is for failing to see that opening. Man was that frustrating…..

By the way it was great seeing AJ and Massoquoi at the game. And it was good to see a win, despite how poor the other team was. I thought the D played well overall, with a lot of stops on 3rd down. Two picks by Sanders, one of which should have resulted in at least 3, maybe 7 points. The stupid carelessness he exhibited by fumbling it when he wasn’t even hit was not a coach’s fault.
