Is Tim Beckman a sociopath, or just a coach who wanted to win? Or is the line between the two that fine?

“And Georgia fans, don’t be turds. Enjoy this. Soak it up. It’s awesome. If you don’t win this year, it’s still not a failure. It’s a heck of a run. Back-to-back in the Playoff era hasn’t been done. So, to ask for a third I feel like it’s gluttonous. I feel like it’s not OK. But we’ll be in the mix.”-- David Pollack, On3.com, 5/9/23
No reason he can’t be both. But he clearly doesn’t need to be coaching kids.

Not to mention he’s an idiot, too.

This guy does not need to be around coaching at all.

The unfortunate truth is that if he were winning, he’d have gotten a pass.

Just a coach who wanted to win according to those who claim a college HC’s only concern is the W/L record.

I expect his attitude about injuries is a slightly more extreme version of something that’s more common than we’d like to think among coaches. Fans belittle injured players all the time for “being soft” and what not. Plenty of people bitched about Crowell’s ankle problems his one year at Georgia. Whenever someone has a hamstring, there are always some people who call them pussies. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Hmmm. “Interim Athletic Director ” sounds pretty good.

This kind of reminds me of the “Hurt vs Injured” speech my coach would give on the first day of practice every year. He would always say, if you’re hurt, I don’t want to hear about it, but if you’re injured, tell a coach. He was very confident in the diagnostic abilities of teenagers.

Tim Wolfe just resigned. Missouri can play football again

Wow! I didn’t think he would. Must have really become toxic there (even beyond one grad student and the football team).

The fact that all the football team and the coaches got behind the demand that Wolfe resign says something. This averts what could have become a very nasty fight over money between the SEC and Mizzou.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of long term repercussions it will have, if any.

Gary Pinkel is more progressive than you think. Remember he supported Michael Sam coming out.
If not for his DUI issue a few years ago, he would be on my list of potential hires for HBC at UGA.

A Beckman headline when Thomas fired?

With Thomas gone, Illinois now has an interim chancellor, interim athletic director and interim football coach, and it is unclear who will have the authority to hire the new coach.
Now watch them somehow end up making the best hire of this crazy offseason. 🙂

Not likely, it’s not a very attractive job. I remember Mackovick coming in and saying “this is the place for me”. The Texas job opened and he was gone at dawn. There was a good deal of rumbling when Chacka Smart turned the Illini b-ball job down that it’s just not a great place to be. People don’t know how good they have it here.

Haha, yes I was more just poking fun at the coaching process in general. Schools that have all sorts of stable leadership in place make hires that end up being terrible all the time (and yes, I get that that’s why so many are scared to force Richt out), so it would be funny/odd if in this situation, they hired a guy and just through blind luck he ended up being the perfect hire for the situation (not necessarily the hottest name).
But more than anything, was just a joke. 😉

First sentence should say the coaching “hiring” process.

Their best hire would be promoting the interim coach Bill Cubit.
He has done better than anyone expected.

Hasn’t everyone pulled a hamstring? How could this guy not believe in them? What–did he think everyone that complained of hamstring in collectively decided to shorten their stride and run slower!? That is insane.

Have you seen the guy? Looks like its been a many a decade since he ran a 40. Perhaps he forgot what an injury feels like.

I believe it’s been a while since he’s seen female genitalia. Which might explain his assholeishness.

Thomas said in the release that he believes he acted appropriately but accepts the decision.
“I believe it is a good time to turn the page and put the focus of this organization back on the success and welfare of our student-athletes,” Thomas said.

Unfortunately, coaches like this abound nation-wide, in sports at all levels. I can remember how shocked my parents were when they found out that my sister’s middle school basketball coach had thrown a basketball at her in practice. She was surprised that my parents thought it was a big deal. Evidently tantrums were a routine with the coach. He was not fired or even really disciplined, but after my father spoke with he and the principal, the coach chilled out (at least for the rest of that season).
To be fair to the coach, my father often referred to my 13-year old sister as “hell on wheels”, and she had the most technical fouls in the league that year. Ha. So maybe the coach was just defending himself…..

Strange world we live in…ESPN makes a movie about The Junction Boys that is a feel-good story of how Bear Bryant earned the love and respect of his players, and built a championship team, by trying to kill them. The story burnished, rather than tarnished, Bryant’s legend.
I’m watching ESPN and they make it sound as though Beckman was lucky to only be fired.

The Junction Boys aired in 2002. The general views on player safety, especially regarding concussions have changed dramatically in the last decade. From players dying during practices to the possible link between concussions and brain disorders, it’s become a much bigger issue.

Bullshit. One of Bear Bryant’s tests of toughness was to withhold water breaks while The Junction Boys practiced in 100 degree heat. That’s a real good way to kill someone with heat stroke. In the Army when we trained in the desert we were ordered to drink a canteen of water every hour. The First Sargent told us he would lock our ass up if we didn’t drink water every hour because he was not going to jail for one of his men dying of heat stroke. Anybody who would do what Bryant did is a fool who does not give a shit about the welfare of his men. In the Army leaders like him would be taken care of by rolling a grenade into their tent at night.

I wasn’t defending Bryant. I was pointing out the context of he movie’s release.

Ok, the anger wasn’t directed at you really. I just get really pissed when these dumbass coaches try to act tough and put someone’s life at risk. I read a couple of years ago where a highschool player died at practice from heat stroke. People said it wasn’t the coaches fault. That’s bullshit, a coach can and should make the players drink water, or kick them off the team. A real leader takes care of his men.

We attended a local high school game this friday night. My wife was shocked when the defensive coach for one of the teams dropped 2 MF’s and several F bombs on the team when they came to the sideline.
I mean we heard it. I am sure that most of the parents there heard it. It was senior night after all.

I just skimmed through the article. Hopefully noone was ever seriously injured. I would think if he mishandled a concussion and someone died he would have the shit sued out of him.

Check back in 20-30 years. With the connection being drawn between football (and other sports) and long term effects of brain trauma, it’s not a stretch to think of lawsuits over this.

As a physician, this makes me sick to my stomach. A physician should have absolute authority over the head coach or anyone else when it comes to injuries or illness. I served in the US Army with some tough son of bitches and they had more understanding when it came to injuries than that douchebag coach.
