“You get questions.”

Sounds like Bryan McClendon’s having a fun time on the recruiting trail these days.

McClendon is Georgia’s recruiting coordinator, among his other titles. He was asked Tuesday night whether that meant he spent last week reaching out to recruits and fielding calls from recruits who were seeking reassurance. McClendon nodded.

“It kinda goes without saying. It really does,” said McClendon, who is also the team’s receivers coach. “That’s something that you’ve just gotta deal with. Something that us coaches know, being in the profession, knowing that you guys (the media) have a job to do, you can’t control that part of it. And you’ve gotta do the best that you can to make sure that you’re controlling the message that gets put out on your end. And that’s kinda all you can do.”

If the staff – assuming it’s still around next February – holds this class together, that’ll be one helluvan accomplishment.

If I was a recruit, I don’t know what would disturb me more: hearing reports of turmoil within the program, or hearing the recruiting coordinator lament the fact that he can’t control his message to recruits the way he’d like.

+1. Keep it to yourself – the recruits want to know that you’re building a relationship with them, not crafting messages to sell them on something.

I think they can hold it together by and large. But the best way to make sure they do is to win the rest of their games, and I think they’re working very on that. I think they realize that they can tell potential recruits that things are fine all day long, but if they end the season pitifully, the kids might drop like flies…..

Agreed. Hope they can keep this class together, lots of talent that we could use.

Carter and Kirby Arnold, the on-field performance and the attacks on the program by our own fans on social media, if the staff can keep the class together, it would be a minor miracle.

If Jacob Eason stays in the fold, I believe the offensive class holds together. If someone convinces him to reopen his recruiting (even he ends up in the fold), all bets are off. If CJP stays (which I have no idea about), the defensive class will stay together.

I think some damage has already been done, not only with the poor play on the field but also with the publicly negative atmosphere that surrounds UGA football. Can’t blame the parents and players for being concerned, significant changes in the staff will only add to the problem.

Fans can keep telling themselves that complaining on social media is not an issue but it is. Journalist today take that stuff and make it a story. I hope they can keep the class together but if they don’t the fan base shares some of the blame Coach Richt will get.

So, what does this mean? When UGA gets embarrassed repeatedly on the field it is wrong for fans to complain? Should true fans never expect to win? What would it say about a program if fans did not complain about poor coaching and mediocrity? If no one complained about UGA’s current standing in the SEC that would mean expectations have been met. And if our expectations have been met by our football program, don’t look for top talent to stay in state, great coaches to join our staff, or any new championship banners to fly over our stadium. Look for the status quo to continue. Contented losers at UGA. What would Erk think about that?

They won’t be there. Richt is gone. Just ask the big donors to the IPF. Hope I am wrong. These problems started 2 years ago and a lot has been corrected. The recruiting and strength and conditioning was pathetic. The roster has way too many holes in the junior and senior classes as a result. If he’s gone after GT and they don’t hire the right guy and keep a decent part of this class and keep Eason, get ready for years of irrelevance and TN and UF back on top in the east.

We lost I get it but don’t tell me they are all the sudden there. Everyone thought A&M or LSU or Ole Miss would be there too. Still trying.

Now the defense is shaping up and we’ve got Eason and Hockman coming on board. I don’t care if Richt is the coach or not but if Pruitt and staff go, it could be a long rest of the decade.

I believe what Eason and his dad say, they made an early commitment, never varied, and have made great efforts to attract other talent. But Eason, and those he influences, will not be enough to make a great class. I expect a fall off before February, and it will be much worse if there is a significant changing of the guard with our staff.

As noted above by Debby, you have to live in a cave to think all the horrible comments from the haters are not having a negative effect and fed back to recruits by our rivals. It happens to some degree to all programs but the attacks with UGA are louder, and more vicious. Not the first year for this either, they have kept the program under siege….from within.

This is the absolute wrong way to look at this. You can not retain a coach/staff to preserve a recruiting class. The definition of insanity – doing the same thing and expecting a different result. I know what the result is and so does McGarity I hope.

I will say that there are those people who think that because the 2012 and 2013 classes were so bad and many gone and very few seniors or juniors who will play at the next level and the freshmen and sophs are much better….there are those that think keeping Richt and this staff one more year will actually lead to winning quicker. A new coach comes in with this roster, no QB and two class holes and most of this class falls out, good luck winning the SEC anytime soon. You will be playing with juniors and sophs and no seniors and very few talented freshmen and most importantly no QB. And there are those that think bringing in this loaded class gives you 3 of 4 years back to full strength, and then a big time QB and then if he’s fired next year the next coach can come in a win immediately. I can go back and forth. I don’t see RIcht as the answer but I see so many other coaches in this conference trying to get over Saban and failing and you wont without a loaded roster, depth and a talented QB. Which way does it happen quicker?

            Like

            • So the new coach gets a roster with holes in it and has to scramble to put together a decent recruiting class. Isn’t that what just happened at Florida? I doubt they will beat Bama, but that guy down there did a solid job so far.

And, and I told Mark too, because they’ve moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn’t bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it’s not okay because if they take my stapler then I’ll set the building on fire…

Florida was LOADED on defense when he came in and Will Grier (when healthy) is better than the QBs we have. Florida is playing juniors and seniors and a few sophs. No freshmen. Look up ours we are playing sophs and freshmen with a few upperclassmen (who won’t be playing in the NFL).

You can defend Richt based on his merit as a coach but defending him based on the idea that no one can come in, clean house, recruit a class and do better or at least equal on the field, after what happened at Florida this year, does not make logical sense. Florida was blocking themselves against GSU a couple of years ago. Today they own the East.

Has a subtitle…gets great recruits but does not know how to use them.
If you voice your views or opinions about the record of this coach, and it is not what the B-M crowd wants to hear, then you are the problem.
Just may UF is a better school or Bama, their fan base has a voice in where they think the programs should go. From top to bottom no university has a better overall program than UF. There is a reason for it. It is called professional management.
Think it is understood at UF no coach is an institution like some at UGA think CMR is an institution and is bigger than the institution and the fan base.

      2013: Bama #1 – UF #4 – UGA #12
These are the kids on the field right now. Porsches beat Pintos. We have a shot this year to build on the #4 class from last year. IF we pull in another top 5 class, it’s fair to expect great things in the very near future.

Florida fans are so notoriously whiny that they ran of the most successful coach in their program’s history (SOS) because he wasn’t winning enough and the pressure got so bad for Urban he almost died while coaching.

There’s a difference between fans having a voice and an angry mob dictating what happens even if it isn’t good for the program.

Hopefully the perspective on losing Chubb (I think it’s safe to say we win at UT and have an edge against UF with Nick) and what a new OC had to deal with mitigates the negativity. I’m ambivalent about Schotty at this point; he just joined the team in the spring and had to hit the ground running with players he didn’t know from Adam, but he doesn’t seem to have added anything to the offense (indeed, we lost Bobo’s creativity). Losing Pruitt or Rocker would definitely hurt.

There is a lot of concern about recruiting. How can we hold on to our recruiting class? Well, winning football games is the best way I know. Don’t be utterly humiliated twice on national TV is another way. Actually having a passing game is another way. Why would we expect recruits to come to UGA right now? What have we won? What are we selling? Whatever we sign in February will be better than we deserve, IMO.

We aren’t winning now, I am with you but trhese problems are a result of 2 horrible years of recruiting and poor coaches on OL and DC, especially with respect to recruiting and strength and conditioning. If you don’t see that recruiting is LIGHT years better now than 2 years ago as well and strength and conditioning then you have no idea about what is really happening. But I can bet you that we will be even worse if we don’t get a good class and a QB. I am all for Richt leaving but I am telling you, they have to hire the right guy and he has to do his damndest to keep a lot of the staff and get the QB or get used to further irrelevance. I honestly don’t trust McGarity knows what he is doing and I am not sure a great coach would want to coach under those circumstances. Hope I am wrong.

We can’t make present decisions because of future fears, IMO. Fear of the future paralyzes us and leaves us with what we have. And that’s it. Someone mentioned earlier that we should find an offensive minded guy as a head coach and hire him on the condition that he keep our defensive staff intact. That would minimize the pain, recruiting wise, if CJP would stay. But honestly, I am ready for a change regardless. Our trend is downward, and CMR’s window has closed, IMO.

LSU has a deeper roster than we do and they got manhandled. Bama will do the same to UF. And that is my point, I am all for Richt going but it better be handled the right way and the right coach or I am telling you get ready for irrelevance. Guaranteed 5 years you will have no chance to win the SEC. Pruitt aint staying.

UF has won the East with a first year coach and a backup quarterback. And we have no chance to win the SEC as it is. We can hardly get less relevant than we are, IMO. We have, in the East now, four patsies, plus two to three cupcakes plus a bad Tech team that we play each year. Anyone with our roster could win eight games. Third best in the East is there for the taking regardless of who our coach is, IMO.

As far as recruiting, the least expendable guy is Pruitt, followed by CMR, then McClendon, then the balance of the assistants. The MOST expendable guy is Schotty.

This is just my opinion of recruiting effectiveness. So if ANY changes are made to the coaching staff, I think that’s the order of magnitude you can expect the recruiting to be effected. I actually think we’d see a bump in offensive recruiting if Schotty were to be replaced.

Having said all that, I expect CMR & Schotty to return, along with McClendon, Brown & Lilly. Not so sure about Pruitt and the guys he hired. If CJP bolts and is given the kind of authority he has here over hires, I’d expect to see an exodus of assistants AND recruits who would join him at his new gig.
