College football, live by the completely subjective playoff process, die by the completely subjective playoff process.
There is no way these people get all the way to the end of the current contract with a four-team postseason field. No frickin’ way.
If ND and Clemson both get in isn’t that effectively giving the ACC TWO playoff slots? Just sayin’.

If Mickey tells the committee to put ND in, they’re in pure and simple.

I’ll go the other way: There is no way the committee leaves out an 11-1 Notre Dame team given the circumstances. Only loss is on the road to a playoff team, and they close by beating a 10-1 Stanford team.
If Baylor runs the table, makes it a more interesting conversation.

But they don’t play a conference championship game. That was the rallying cry against Baylor and TCU last year.

And ND does? One less win is guaranteed for them. Let them dream, then jerk the rug out from under them. Priceless will be my adjective. Not even sure ND belongs in the Top 10, and certainly not the Final 4. We want a rematch while we exclude other teams?

I hope you are prophetic Senator, it is time to get this playoff to a proper level of teams to crown a national champion. It is also time to tell ND to take a hike from the special treatment they deserve. Reducing the number of conference champions from 4 to three may just do it, something needs to wake the Power 5 up, they have acted like little wimps to agree to put the Domers on a pedestal. CFB is way beyond the point where they need a ND to make them successful. Tell me again how long it has been since ND has won a decent, meaningful bowl game? And compare that t the number of times they got placed in a bowl above their ability and got crushed.
LikeLike
Mac, you’re going to get your playoff expansion, but not because there’s a crying need to make sure the proper number of teams are represented in a quality sense. It’s to make sure nobody in the P5 misses getting their share of the pie.
And as long as ND has its own national television contract and following, it’s not getting moved anywhere.
It’s about the money and nothing else, and you are kidding yourself every time you think it’s not.

It has always been about the money and always will be. That does not just apply to college football either. To think it has not always been that way is kidding yourself.

And you are kidding yourself that it is all about the money. They work in tandem, but the fan outrage and injustice of it will fuel the change…and yes, money will flow from that.

Fan outrage over a 11-1 ND in the playoff field because it’s not a conference member? Suuuure.

I would be pissed. I think it is pretty shitty that they get to play by a different set of rules than everyone else–just because they were good when my grandparents were in their prime.

My point was much broader than that, ND is a pimple on a cow’s ass to the totality of CFB. But they are muy grande in NYC, Philly, Boston, and Chicago…..with all 100K CFB fans who live there. I am trusting that the Committee will get it right and drop ND out if any Big 12 team runs the table. Then, hey, the Pope might back the 8 team playoff..along with which ever conference commish gets screwed this year.

Nah. Notre Dame games draw eyeballs even when they have a losing record. Their fans are incredibly loyal and they watch, no matter what. That’s why they are and will continue to be a part of the conversation regardless of their record, lack of a championship and lack of affiliation. Their fan base can still be monetized.

Have to go to 8. That way every conference champion is in plus 3 wild cards. But they need to also make a rule that every team has to play at least one team out of conference from a Power 5. And if you play 2 it should be a significant bonus.

How about 6 teams with top two getting a bye?

How about conference realignment so there are 4 superconferences each with 2 divisions. The division champs play for the conference title, those 4 conference champs play in a 4 team playoff with the 2 winners of the champions playing for the NC. That’s really an 8 team playoff with no subjectivity. ND has to join a conference if they want in and likely that conference would be the ACC.

Wet dream stuff there Mayor. Thought it might happen 2-3 years ago but that ship has sailed. Easier to go with 8, less friction there, and doesn’t require balls.

Say you have a 3 loss conference champion ranked (P5) ranked #12. Should they get in? Just because they are champs, bur clearly not top 8 material? I believe that if you go to conference champs getting in, you could have new conferences form that shouldn’t and maybe current conferences split to make new alliances. Check March Madness for results….

Yeah, a 3 loss conference champ from a tough conference could easily be better than a 1 loss from a weaker conference. Championships mean something. Let them in.

Absolutely they should get in. Haven’t seen a 3 loss champ before, but they represent that conference and who can argue SOS any more?

I get a mental picture that the committee has an ad rate sheet, classified by team, on the table during their meetings.
LikeLike
HS, I absolutely think they have an ad sheet at the table. They’ll never admit it, but the WWL is about one thing and on thing only – the Benjamins.
LikeLike
Disagree, Committeehasn o allegiance to Mickey. Can argue their opinion/logic but I see nothing that indicates they are playing favorites (seem to have pissed off everyone at this point). Those games will draw strong ratings regardless of who is in.

Sorry, “has shown no allegiance to Mickey”

Except for the weekly ratings show they put on for the sole purpose of giving ESPN broadcast material.

Yeah, I am not a fan of the weekly show on this. But nothing links them to the WWL in how they make their selections. I would be more concerned if rankings were leaked to ESPN reporters. Not sure what the benefit is for announcing this early (I know, I know, the money in your point of view.) But I could do with the 1st rankings being timed after mid-November. I do like seeing how they start all over each week, instead of following the polls’ method where there is no movement/change unless someone loses. Much much better process to me.

Mickey writes the checks. Therefore, there’s allegiance.
I was being sarcastic about the ad sheet comment, but I don’t doubt for one minute that the main reason Tattoo U jumped over TCU/Baylor was the brand that translates to ratings and to advertising revenue for Mickey.
I admit to a bias – I HATE the selection committee and have made that clear from day 1. I want a champions only playoff with 8, but that will never happen for many reasons. If it were going to be 4, the BcS was sufficient for the selection, but the coaches poll became so biased and toxic that it wasn’t feasible.

Top 1% of the Top 1%? Fitting I suppose. I think Stanford can knock ND out but hate for it to come down to one game. I think if the Top 3 hold serve, and either Baylor or OK State goes undefeated, the Committee drops ND. Just don’t see them crapping on the Big 12 again since either would have a more impressive resume.

I am of the opinion that Clemson is no. 1 solely so they can rank ND fourth. Don’t kid yourselves, Notre Dame always falls up. They won’t get left out at 11-1 no matter what. And at 10-2 with a very close loss to Stanford they’ll be closer to 4 than they deserve to be. A loss by bama or Ohio state pushes them back in the conversation.

So far, nd’s best “win” is a loss, and they should be glad it rained. Stanford is their only chance for a decent win, and if the Tree loses to the domers, it will be at least a 2 loss team. They will fall out because of their weak schedule.

Sagarin has been way off on those before. ND should take a hit with WF and BC coming up. Again, ND has no, zero, quality wins. Satnford could be one, but just one. Undefeated Bayklor or OSU would trump that in quality and quantity.

Bowl and network money are ruining college football. Let them compete for championships, not bid on them.

I think fall football should stay like it is now, the natty business can just do its thing, Sec champs are the only real titles for us anyways.
There should be spring football that is 7 on 7 and uses the ncaa basketball schedule and tournament as a model. Let the OC run it, gets your skill players good workouts to be ready in the fall.
