Georgia Tech dropped its seventh game of the season last night. Mark Bradley shares a sad with the genius.
1. Paul Johnson, a coaching lifer, appeared shaken after this loss. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a season like this,” he said. His Yellow Jackets, who were ranked No. 12 in the land and favored at Notre Dame on Sept. 19, are 3-7 and cannot finish in anything better than a last-place tie in a division they were picked to win. Several of those losses have been of the excruciating variety, but this was the worst. Tech lost three second-half fumbles, dropped a third-down pass that would have garnered a first down and saw a potential winning drive aborted by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Johnson’s offense was limited to 258 yards and didn’t score a point after the first quarter. For the sixth time this season, the Jackets lost as a betting favorite. Good grief.
Even if Tech wins out, with that fan base, it’s not going bowling. So, inevitably…
Georgia will get Georgia Tech’s best shot.
You heard it here first.
Bonus amusement: Tech’s bowl streak is over, which means this is the kind of year the Jackets haven’t had since Bill Lewis was in charge, but what’s got the gang at StingTalk riled up is that David Pollack got to take a ride in the Rambling Wreck yesterday.
Hey, it’s Georgia Tech. He can do that.
“Georgia will get (insert team)’s best shot.” That isn’t in the Lexicon yet? It should be.

Doesn’t every team get every opponent’s best shot? Other than playing against children, I cannot remember a contest, be it individual or team sport, where I casually made my first move.

To a segment of our fan base, Georgia never gives anyone our best shot. The only reason Georgia ever wins is because the team we played was overrated, down this year, not in our class, etc. You haven’t figured that out since you lurk around here? 🙂

The one about winning against an overrated-down this year-not in our class team has already been added to the Lexicon. It’s called Dawgrading. 🙂

Yes, he can do that. But the bigger question is Why would he want to? I guess CPJ has bigger fish to fry, huh, tech?

Too bad there weren’t many of them there to see it.

After The Squib Kick® Tech gave The Genius a Paul Hewitt-sized contract extension through 2020.
So there is a lot more where that came from.

You’d think as good at math as they are, they would’ve spotted last year as the giant statistical outlier.
As bad as our OLine looks, they look like 2012 Bama compared to the NATS. VPI was sacking their QB with 3-man rushes.

When the crowd gets down to something like 10,000 on a regular basis and throwing in a hot dog and a Coke doesn’t help attendance then the Techsters will act–not before. The keep getting into these long-term contract situations with coaches. You would think they would have learned from the Paul Hewitt situation not to do that but they never seem to learn.

I had the game on while I was working on other stuff. Tech was moving down the field late for what could have easily been the game winning field goal. ESPN had already cued up the footage of tech’s game winning kick against VT last year. And then the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty blew it all up for them. The irony was that VT had just given tech 15 yards on their own unsportsmanlike conduct penalty only a couple of plays earlier. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.

It was a bad Thursday night line-up so I watched most all this game, rare for either of those boring teams. You almost couldn’t have written it better, the euphoric start with a 14=0 lead, then squandering it, then the dramatic tease where VT missed the XPT try to leave the door open for the grand finale. TV played it up and you know the Nerds were all giddy and pissing themselves. Then…boom. Down goes The Genius!! That ended up being a very good Thursday night after all.
Loved that defensive front and how they dominated the option, hope Pruitt was watching.

Given the improvements vs runs up the middle this season, if the outside guys can play disciplined, Pruitt should really shoot for a shutout in that game.
And given that the nerds are so undersized in the front 7 that they may as well be FCS Southern at this point (seriously, with Gotsis out, they have maybe one 280 lb DT, no one over that size) and even Shoddy’s ultraconservative playcalling should get some points.

We are much better up front, surprised by that, but we don’t have the beef VT threw at them. Clearly we should win, but they have nothing left to shoot at but us. Dare I say we get their best shot? Would feel better if we had been better against the run under Pruittlast year, looked like it was the first time he had seen the TO. GSU will give us a preview.

Georgia plays at noon tomorrow (Saturday) right? Its all so confusing. Why can we have it like the good ole days, like when we lost to Tech on a much more consistent basis, and the games started at 1 or 2 in the afternoon.
You know, back before the coaching staff destroyed all the talent on the football team and turned the players into nice people.
Georgia football used to be fun, back when we lost more games than Tech. Regularly. Wonder how Wally woulda looked with a sideline babe on Thursday night.

When Tech passes it is a feast or famine proposition. An occasional 50 yard gain or a big sack, drop or ball into the bleachers.

I was pulling for Tech last night. A loss would put VT’s bowl streak in jeopardy and I really wanted Tech to win the the next 2 games and then go into the game against UGA with a chance at continuing the bowl streak only to lose to us at home.
VaTech and GaTech’s bowl streaks both going down would move UGA into 2nd place on that list.

“Georgia will get Georgia Tech’s best shot.”
Maybe, maybe not, but there’s absolutely no proof for this. The Dunwoody Journal-Constitution was saying in 2011 that Tech would give Georgia its best shot because the Dawgs would be resting guys for the SECCG, and…Georgia won easily. They said that Tech would give Georgia its best shot in 2012 because the Dawgs would be looking ahead to Bama and VAD LEE IS TOTES AWESOME!!! and Georgia won by like 80 points.
It’s not like UGA is any good this season, but this whole “Tech’s gonna GET TO EM THIS YEAR, WE SWEAR” stuff every. single. year. out of Schultz/Bradley is tiresome. Maybe Tech just blows this year, guys. And will lose. Easily.

Good lord, the “Tech’s best shot” meme is played-out. As the Senator and others here have noted, it’s meaningless at best: even if they HAVE been giving us their “best shot” all these years, they’ve sucked too badly for that to matter in the slightest.
On a different note, man, I thoroughly enjoyed last night’s ugly facsimile of a football game. The sequence of events leading up to the end of the game — just outstanding. Tech couldn’t lose in a more fitting fashion.
My one complaint about Johnson-coached Tech teams: they don’t quit the way they used to under the likes of Chan Gailey. I really, really enjoyed seeing them just stop trying, particularly the way they did against Georgia for several years in a row in the early to mid-2000s.
LikeLike
I’m pretty sure they quit in 2012. (And that was by far a better/more talented team than the mess of walkons and freshmen they’ll trot on the field in Atlanta the Saturday after Thanksgiving.)

Most of our wins against them this past 15 years or so have been close ones. Some of them we’ve had to pull out of the fire. Some of them we’ve been downright lucky. It’s just wrong to act like they haven’t been a threat to us in that game most years.
