If you read the article he is a butt hurt Auburn fan who is hoping that his second school can do what his first school couldn’t do last week.
I know a ton of Southern people and have several family members who are alumni who are also UGA supporters whether through family ties or just the fact that they grew up rooting for the Dawgs. For years when the Eagles were the class of I-AA (I refuse to call it FCS) I would pull for them. I get where some of their folks would feel like they are looked at as an inferior opponent but that is the case of any lower level school in the SEC foot print. Look at Alabama, they managed to kill off the UAB program (at least temporarily).
Plus the claims about the “academic accompishments” at Southern which is prep for the big “we’re the real GSU” piece (even though no amount of football wins has an impact on research university status.)
Well, I’m still pissed at Chuck Knapp too. Not for the same reason, but because Erk would have said “yes” if it hadn’t been clear that Knapp wanted him to say “no” all along. Erk’s first year would have been my first at UGA. Instead I got Ray. Thanks Chuck!
D…don’t know what your relationship with Chuck might be, but he really had little say about Erk. I was always told the final straw for Erk (even though he had already begun assembling a staff…with Pat Sullivan as OC, no less) was that the Regents would not accept his tenure track from Statesboro so that he would have had no state retirement. At his age, then, this was a big deal. But in any case Chuck Knapp was only superficially in the discussion, at best. Chuck was not a bad guy, just had no experience outside the DC beltway, no preparation for dealing with a serious football atmosphere. In fact, at dinner one night, I sat through a lecture from one of Chuck’s minions who directed his scholarly ire at folks who took college football seriously. I was told the minion thought he was among friends. I corrected that thinking for him.
That’s so funny he referenced that 2007 Furman game. I was a freshman that year at southern and left the game in the 2nd quarter to go back to my dorm and watch the dawgs on my 20′ tv. I got back just in time to see them bust out in the black unis. I went nuts. Transferred up to Athens the next year and never looked back. The hate the have for uga is real. Statesboro is a shithole.
I still remember them talking smack after a very substantial loss in 2000. Have never encountered a fan base quite like that in 17 years of going to games. Figures that Paul Johnson, super genius, was their coach back then though.
Much more about why no one cares for his War Eagles, little to do with UGA. Most of the grown up Eagle fans will always love the Dawgs, they were THE state school, and most every town overwhelmingly supported the R&B. Southern was fun to watch, but never a real contender for football fans in the state. This guy is nuts, sure the younger fans hate UGA, because young fans are generally out of balance, but the overall relationship of adult fans of the two schools is pretty good and respectful. We are good at what we do, and they are good at what they do, but there isn’t much of a crossover, or reason to hate. They will always be Little Brother, and Auburn fans will always suck, nothing to see here.
But this doesn’t mean they aren’t going to give us their best shot, does it Senator?
Agree with Mac in that part of my family are alums of GSU. They could care less about the football program, don’t know Erk like I knew him when I went to UGA and pretty much keep their adult hands off the fanfare. They went to GSU because they lived close by when in the Service and completed degrees as well as got additional ones. I think my niece and nephews began classes there but they ended up graduating from Clemson, GT and Ga Mil at Dahlonega, respectively.
My brother just sent photos of a 24-bird wild turkey flock on their farm. He nor his wife keep up with sports, but they were aware that GSU beat FU last year. Think I’ll tell them that I’m going turkey hunting tomorrow and that GSU is the turkey to see if I can get a rise out of them.
Article translation: “I couldn’t get into UGA…and I’ve been bitter about it ever since. Oh, and 27 years years ago a GSU coach perhaps was slighted or something by a UGA admin, who probably is dead, yet I still just don’t think that’s right anyway so I’m going to hold it against them (mainly because, again, UGA wouldn’t take me in.”)
My Son is a proud Georgia Southern Grad…he is a fan of both schools. IF UGA had something big on the line this weekend, he would be wearing red and pulling for UGA…alas, UGA does not…he says Go Eagles. I have spent some time in Statesboro the last 5 years, going to games there is a lot of fun, and you do see a good bit of UGA stuff..should be a good game Saturday…I am worried that UGA will not be able to score enough to win.
Living near the Boro, it’s not really hate, it’s more jealousy. The under 40 GSU folks are the most obnoxious. What the young crowd doesn’t know is the history of the restart of Ga. Southern football. They don’t realize that Georgia begat Ga. Southern. A group of locals, mostly UGA grads (some were UGA lettermen in fact) got together and convinced Erk to leave UGA. Ga. Southern has a great history – the GSU fan base just needs to put it in perspective. BTW, all of them think that the Eagles are going up to Athens tomorrow and are not only going to beat Georgia – they are going to whip ’em. Sorry Eagle fans, I don’t see it happening…

This is shaping up to be one of those games that we come out flat against a much less talented but much more motivated team.

That was my exact impression when I first read the article. Looks like with those 2 degrees he could not get into UGA twice, lol.

Mine too. Lots of alcoholic therapy because of the Goff years. Always felt it would’ve been different with Erk.

A lot has changed since 2007. You seem to be fairly judgmental.

The GSU smacktalk has not changed. They may be the ones who are overconfident.

Judgmental how? Is it because I think Statesboro as a town is lacking in amenities and any semblance of diversity?
