Game day thoughts, Georgia Southern edition

All I’ve got for you as I prepare to head out the door is a series of random musings.

Per Weiszer, Georgia is 5-0 all-time against Georgia Southern, with the closest final margin 20 points in 2004.  I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty certain that point margin stat will have to be updated after tonight.

You want an area to keep an eye on?  Check out some special teams data:

Isaiah McKenzie only has 12 punt returns this season, but he’s returned two of them for touchdowns, including a 53-yard touchdown last week. Those two touchdowns are tied for the nation’s lead and gives him four punt return touchdowns in his career in only his second season.

Brice Ramsey is third in the SEC in punting with a 45.0 yards average on 12 kicks this year.

Bulldogs kicker Marshall Morgan is 14 of 19 on field goals with a long of 47. Georgia Southern’s Younghoe Koo is 4 of 4 on field goals, with a long of 44.

Georgia Southern leads the nation in kickoff return defense, giving up 13.9 per return, and third in punt return defense at 0.57 yards.

The Eagles are 22nd on kickoff returns at 23.9. Georgia ranks 13th in the SEC on kickoff returns at 16.7

Georgia Southern has blocked three punts this season and Georgia has two.

I wonder how McKenzie looked in practice this week.  Heh.

It’s another week of run the ball, stop the run and avoid turning the ball over.  That formula worked beautifully, if not overwhelmingly at Auburn, especially after the defense made some halftime adjustments.  (I do expect to see the Eagles try to exploit the left side of Georgia’s defense, if only to find out if the Dawgs there have more than a casual interest in containment this week.)  If we can get a repeat of all that, I expect a win, though I’m less convinced we’ll see a cover.

It’s Senior Night and we get a new UGA crowned… er, collared, so there’s that.

You know what would be nice?  If Lambert and Mitchell actually connected on one of those deep throws.  (What’s the over/under on the number of times Malcolm sees single coverage?)  How ’bout it, fellas?

You know what else would be nice?  If the o-line managed to open a decent hole for Sony Michel to run through now and then.

And here’s hoping Keith Marshall sees the field in his last home game.  He deserves a few cheers for that.

Feel free to pitch in, folks.  You know where to find the comments section.

Lambert connect on a deep pass? I want some of what the Senator has been drinking.

GSU’s weakness is defending the deep ball. WV ate them alive over the top. With Mitchell, McKenzie, Godwin, & Davis, that has to be in the game plan.

I think the offensive plan we had at the beginning of the year, sans Chubb, is the one we need to use against GS and GT. That worked until we met better defensive fronts. I have seen enough of the reliance on the Wild Dawg and abandoning the pass. New OL needs to get it done to unclog things. All on them tonight, I think the defense should be able to contain GS’s offense enough, they will pound but we are good enough against the run. Pruitt needs to have his plan to stop an option in place by now.

WVA beat GSU 44-0. If we don’t win by more than 20, I’ll consider it a measure of how far the offense has deteriorated through the season. And I don’t go for the Chubb excuse in this game. We ought to be able to score plenty.

If Schotty has a lick of sense he’ll find ways to run up as many points as possible. If for no other reason than to somewhat redeem himself. CMR may want to sit on a small lead and let the D do the heavy lifting, but I don’t believe Schotty can afford to do that. I’m not going out on a limb when I say a lot of folks question whether Schotty belongs in coaching at all.

  6. Man. Tech sucks this year. I’ve already admitted my come to Jesus moment that MR will be back for another year thanks to his cult of personality and the team moms/nervous old men but if Schitty is back and Pruitt is gone it’s going to be a long year next year. But hey. Eason as a frosh with a possibly shittier o line will cure all ills according to half the commenters on here.

If Pruitt is gone and Schottenheimer is back I will have to find something else to do with my Saturday’s next fall. I’m not subjecting myself to that. Life is too short.

          • I’ve known the senator before he even had a blog and I’m pretty sure his admonition was directed at both sides. The vitriol from the blind MR supporters is as toxic as that from the realists. Check out Derek’s posts for example. I get it. You go to church with MR and couldn’t care less if he loses to GSU or a dumpster fire of a Yech team that was a preseason ACC front runner. He’s a good guy and record be damned. Just bc I don’t share your mindset I’m not a real fan. Heard it from more realistic posters than you. If he wants to ban me for being realistic than more power to him.

That makes me bitter? Ok. I haven’t posted much at all since the Senator fired the warning shot because I figured if I didn’t have anything nice to say there was no point in repeating myself. I think the above post was pretty mild. Not many people think Schottenheimer is doing a good job. I’ll fade back into the background for awhile until there is something more interesting to talk about.

Yes. In fact, even you said, “Y’all see that fla vs fla Atlantic score at half? I’d like to laugh..but I think it makes me more embarassed.”

But what’s there for a Georgia fan to be embarrassed about?

Answer: Because of what it implies about the current state of our football program when FAU looks significantly more competitive against Florida, and in arguably tougher circumstances.

        Like

        • Dawgfan Will

Eh. Florida struggled against a Vandy team we handled pretty well. The whole transitive thing doesn’t work well in college football, and it’s especially pointless this year.

          Like

          • Turd Ferguson

There’s a difference between transitivity and comparing two teams against common opponents. The latter of the two is widely regarded as perfectly legitimate, and is often invoked when determining tie-breakers in standings, etc.

        • Dawgfan Will

And just to be clear, I agree that we’re a mess this year. I just think Florida’s struggles with FAU don’t say much about OUR program.

Sports bars will have it for sure but there are so many good/better games on tonight at the same time that I doubt many will have the GS/UGA game on unless they have a lot of TVs. Only fans of the two schools would choose that option.

We scored more points than they did. We stopped them on 4th and 1 in OT. We scored thd winning TD on a won. It was not a fluke such as Tech over FSU or Miami over Duke. The only reason you say Wd did not deserve to win is because you don’t like the coach.

If we did not deserve to win then you are advocating that the team that scored fewer points and could not convert on 4th and 1 in OT was the ream that deserved to win. There is no logic to that.

Your tactic is to always speak in terms of there only being 2 extremes; a loss or a brilliantly played game where every Bulldog played perfectly. That isn’t the real world. We deserved to win but we did not play brilliantly. There are points along a spectrum in real life.
