I dare say it will. Very interesting indeed. Coach Richt found our program in a difficult, underachieving place, and made it better. However, that was 15 years ago. CFB has undergone a lot of changes since then. I used to think that stability of staff was a virtue in itself, but I no longer see that as the case. I cannot help but wonder what this year might have been without the disastrous hires of Schottenheimer and Sale. And, too, what role their future here has played a role in his dismissal. If his remaining in Athens were made contingent on firing them and he refused to do so, then I would have to say, with regret, “Nice knowing you. Have a nice life.”

The timing of this is excellent. (As was LSU’s announcement that Les was staying.) If you’re going to jump into the head coach market you don’t wait, and you also don’t want a coach like CMR twisting in the wind. Fuentes is the only up-and-comer off the market, and UGA shouldn’t have their sights set so low anyways. Now there are two marquee programs looking for coaches and UGA stands to get one of the best coaches available in time to save the recruiting class. Let’s hope they move quickly at B-M to secure a great coach.

As one who midseason went from supporting Richt to thinking there needed to be a change, I do have to admit I am bummed on many levels. There has never been a coach that I felt represented my university as well as he did and no one I ever felt more desire to see succeed than CMR. I do agree that a change was needed and I’m glad he wasn’t left to twist in the wind any longer but I do still have some shock and disbelief that it really happened. I hope there is a major plan in place for where to go next, and if it happens to be Mullen, color me pissed. If they don’t get someone of the level of Patterson, David Shaw etc. then this will have been a fools errand. And god no, do not let it be Pete Carroll.

Strange decision to stay through the bowl game. Even if loyal to UGA, Richt needs to go and let them clear house now. Goodbye to CJP and the turnaround on D, and probably goodbye to McClendon and Brown, which also would mean goodbye to being Running Back U.

you and i do not have much common ground. i guess FSU should have fired Bowden in year 15 (Schlabach points out that Bowden didn’t win until his 18th year). we should cease pretending that dignity and ethical behavior are important to our entire INSTITUTION, because if a few pissy millionaires or a fragile-ego AD can do this it’s clear that any sort of dignity is unimportant in the end. He was THAT close to an NC in 2002, 2005, 2007, 2012.
When they asked the coaches who they wanted their son to play for, he won the poll.

To be fair, he’s made that program more relevant than it’s been. That’s not nothing. He’s a very good QB coach and a good offensive mind.
He’d also cost something close to $5 million a year to get him away from MSU. Not sure McGarity likes him that much.
LikeLike
Like you, I think the $$$ all but eliminates Mullen from serious contention.
But for the record, if the main criticism of Richt — both among fans and among pundits (see, e.g., Schlabach’s article today) — was that he could win all/most of the games he was supposed to win, but not enough of the “big” games, I don’t see how a Mullen hire makes sense. Miss St. played 4 teams this season that were ranked in the top-25 at the time of the game, … and lost all 4 of them. They, too, had Alabama at home. And they, too, got their asses handed to them. They looked decent for the first half of last season, … before losing to every ranked team they faced down the stretch (including Tech in a bowl game). And the year before that? Same story: 5 games against ranked teams, and lost all 5 of them.

To buy Mullen, you have to believe the resources he’d have available in Athens are far enough above what he’s got right now at MSU to make a big difference.

I think Mullen might end up being a lateral hire, should they go that route. He may be slightly better than Richt. He also has a slimy quality that may ultimately disqualify him. All that said, he’s coaching a Mississippi State program with no history of any success whatsoever, and he’s won at a higher percentage than anyone in a very long time there. It’s a hard place to win at. They have fewer resources than pretty much everyone they’re competing with, and it’s difficult to recruit the kinds of athletes even Ole Miss can get. I mean, they’re little brother to a traditionally mediocre SEC program.

I think most people who wanted a regime change understand that doing so often requires at least a season or two of adjusting — especially if there are significant changes in offensive and/or defensive philosophies.
In other words, we’re happy to allow that things might have to get worse before they can get better — just as long as the “better,” whenever it comes, is indeed better than the way things have been recently.

Yes I do think you and the rest of you are being hypocritical. And I think your cursing and ad hominem response is a tell that you know I’m right. You yell and stamp your feet for change since 10 win seasons aren’t good enough for you. And then you plead for time and patience. Patience is required to just get us back to those same 10 win seasons that you couldn’t bear any more.
Bottom line is that you got what you wanted. Congratulations. I hope it works out. If it does then I’ll admit that my skepticism was wrong. But given your comments here I don’t think there is any chance that if this change doesn’t work out that you would admit to being wrong.
Does that make better than you? Kinda.
LikeLike
Thanks for that, McNease…right on the spot.
LikeLike
Here, let me straighten some things out for you.
There’s a difference between calling someone an asshole and engaging in ad hominem. You see, ad hominem is when you criticize a person instead of criticizing his argument. But that’s pretty clearly not what I did. I criticized both you and your argument.
There’s also a difference between saying, “I think it’s time for him to go,” and “yell[ing] and stamp[ing] your feet for change.” Sorry you cannot understand this.
“But given your comments here I don’t think there is any chance that if this change doesn’t work out that you would admit to being wrong.” Maybe the problem is that you can’t fucking read. If you’d simply scroll down a few comments, you’d find yours truly admitting, “I fully expect McGarity to screw this up.” I expect there to be rough times ahead for this program. But what you and the other dipshit Richt-apologists don’t seem to understand is that this is perfectly compatible with also thinking that it was time for the program to move on from Mark Richt.
Sorry your hero lost his job today. But some of us care more about Georgia football than we do about Mark Richt.
LikeLike
Since you seem to be losing your shit, I’ll let this be my final reply in this and let you have the last word.
As for ad hominem I disagree that it has to be INSTEAD of arguing against a position. In Latin it literally means “to the man” or more PC these days to the person. You attacked me as an asshole. That’s an ad hominem attack. I don’t care what your thoughts are about me, but it is evidence of someone without a good argument or someone who’s just angry and probably not thinking rationally.
As for your next couple of points I think these can be easily grouped into a general section called “I’m different from the others.” Ok, if you were one of the ones that was arguing that UGA would be better off without CMR but not so strongly that it had to be immediately (the yelling and stamping of feet thing is a metaphor for immediate action not that I think that you were literally stamping your feet) then I apologize for grouping you with the others here and elsewhere, but honestly I wasn’t really talking to you directly. You just piqued my interest with the whole hypocrite thing. I think there is plenty of that to go around today.
As for my feelings on Richt, he’s no hero of mine. My calculation is one of simple probabilities and optimization. What is the probability that UGA becomes Bama with another coach hired by McGarity? Will such a move provide optimal results for UGA football and its supporters? To ask those questions that way pretty much answers them. Can you win in poker by pushing all in with a hole 2,7 before the flop? Sure but that doesn’t make it worth the risk.
That’s it. You can have the last word.

Donnan was 8-4 in 2000, Richt the same in 2001. Then he went 13-1 the next year. Not too long to adjust.
