Look who’s driving the train now.

I guess Greg McGarity didn’t like appearing clueless at the press conference.

The Clay family received an in-home visit from UGA assistants Thomas Brown and Jeremy Pruitt on Monday night. But what happens when the new staff comes in? Will his scholarship offer be honored by the new coaching staff?

“We got reassurance from Coach Pruitt and Coach Brown about that,” Willie Clay said. “(The athletic director) has told those guys that anybody who is committed obviously we are honoring them and we don’t care who ‘the new coach is,’ we are obviously going to honor that commitment we got.”

Good to hear.

Why does GM still have a job? He’s a terrible liar, leader and only the WWE script writers could make him look worse than the last few days.

Who believes he made the decision to fire CMR on his ride home from Atl after the Tech game?

Not me. That was a bare faced lie and everyone knows it. Why not simply tell the truth? It’s good enough. If you had the audacity to appear at that press conference, tell it like it is. I’m pretty sure Mark could handle it.

I believe it. It is totally in keeping with his ‘management style’ – This is why there’s no announcement about a replacement, no plan for how to handle recruiting, no clue as to what to do next. He didn’t decide to pull the trigger until after the Tech game. So, no plan, other than, “FIRE RICHT!!!”

Did Pruitt and Brown dook it out in the Clay’s home? Surely they took 2 cars.

I must’ve missed something. When did Baghdad Bob start running our athletics program?

Today, McGarity tells assistants to let recruits know commitments will be honored – “McGarity is an idiot! Who does he think he is? ”

      Wonder what tomorrow will bring.

At least it won’t bring more of your bitching and moaning about how CMR should be fired.

Chili: I gather that you feel Richt had hit his ceiling and was unlikely to bring the program any closer to winning a national title — a view to which I, as you know, am very sympathetic — and we needed to cut our losses. When others in these comment threads said Richt deserved a little more time to develop the defense/next year’s recruiting class, your dismissed them as slavish Richt acolytes who couldn’t see the writing on the wall and said you didn’t have any confidence in Richt’s leadership.

But now, in the fallout from Richt’s dismissal, touchy (and, to my mind, quite valid) questions are being asked about Greg McGarity’s priorities and decisions. You, however, appear to have complete confidence in McGarity, to the point where you’ve placed him above any criticism (if your responses to his critics are to be taken at face value).

You’re well within your rights to do all of those things, but it sure seems like you’re judging them by wildly divergent standards. When I look at Mark Richt, I see a person who, while he didn’t maximize the talent available to him and didn’t take the program to the elite levels I’d hoped for, still performed at a high level and did some tremendous things for UGA. When I look at Greg McGarity, on the other hand, I see someone who has allowed our athletics programs in general to trend toward mediocrity by prizing arbitrary notions of frugality and the “Georgia Way” over giving our teams the resources and coaching they need to succeed — traits that seem to be revealing themselves once again in the search for Richt’s replacement.

Sincere question, not trying to play gotcha games here: Can you explain to me why your confidence in McGarity is so much higher than it was in Richt?

I can’t speak for chili, but here’s one thing I’ve found frustrating about the majority of the comments and posts over the last few days: They all criticize ADGM’s decisions, yet few, if any, suggest what ADGM should have done instead.

For example: “I can’t believe he sat on stage at the presser and praised Richt without explaining why he was fired!”

Should ADGM have publicly pilloried Richt? Should he have not had RIcht there?

Another example: “I can’t believe he does or doesn’t have so and so on the recruiting trail!”

Should he have immediately pulled everyone off the trail? For my money, sending the coaches out there to say “I’m not sure what’s going to happen, but your scholarship is guaranteed” sounds like a darn good choice. We’re also talking about an inherently awkward and fluid situation. CMR has been fired for all of two business days. I don’t demand perfection from the AD over those two days.

The most recent example is that he prioritizes frugality and the Georgia Way.

There’s a lot of truth to that, but not if we’re just looking at the Richt decision. Keeping Rich would have been the frugal, Georgia Way decision. Firing him is not. I’m withholding judgment until I see ADGM (a) hamstring a new hire or (b) go bargain shopping for a new hire. Until then, he’s innocent until proven guilty — at least as far as the football HC decision goes.

I’m not on here criticizing everything GM does, so I can’t speak to that. I do think that his appearance with Richt at the press conference was a PR disaster, and that there were several ways the same effect could have been achieved without GM coming off as (1) over his head, (2) smarmy, and (3) dishonest. All of the questions asked at the press conference were easily predictable. Some people are good at this kind of thing. McGarity is not. Maybe he is prized for his ability to juggle egos. Maybe he is a good decision maker. Maybe GM is great in small groups or one on one. But this is not his first PR failure. Or his second. As the face of the AA, he is embarrassing.

        • Doug, I’m not going to defend every decision McGarity is going to make and I’m not saying he’s above criticism at all. What I am saying is that 99% of the criticism he’s gotten over the past two days is based purely on anger over the Richt firing from people who would be blasting him right now regardless of what he did.

That’s different than criticism Richt built up over the course of a 15 year career. This is reactionary. The firing of Richt was a long time in the making.

Senator, add me to that 1% . I sent letters to Jere Morehead last year regarding Greg McGarity, his hires thus far, his handling of the Gurley situation, his management of our finances, the pitiful infrastructure at Sanford and his scheduling so many cupcakes. He should have been fired a year ago.

              • It should be pointed out that the majority of GTP’ers hailed McGarity and his new scheduling philosophy when he first started because they claimed Damon Evans and his scheduling good opponents was one of the elements holding Richt back from winning more. I guess now we can rule that out.

That is incorrect chili. Like most things football you got this about 50% right and the 50% that you got wrong is the important half. Red Panties was a sucker for scheduling a tough game at exactly the wrong time and in the wrong place. He scheduled a night game on the West Coast the week before the game against Bama in 2008. The net effect was that the Dawgs effectively lost 2 days of practice before playing the toughest game on their schedule. No wonder they came out flat in the second half. You see, it isn’t just the game on the other side of the country that is the problem, although that can be a problem, too (see 2009 at Okie State where the Okies dedicated their new stadium–Georgia was the sacrificial lamb done in by the refs, and 2010 at Colorado–midseason similar situation). It is the NEXT game that is the real problem. Scheduling is an art. Red Panties got played for a fool by other ADs regularly. Glad he’s gone. If you aren’t you are the only one.

Not sure who vetted McGarity when he was hired; not sure why nobody is looking at his hiring track record so far at UGA; pretty sure that anyone in any business relationship hates working for a prick; damn sure wish the Damon Evans mess never happened.
