“And Georgia fans, don’t be turds. Enjoy this. Soak it up. It’s awesome. If you don’t win this year, it’s still not a failure. It’s a heck of a run. Back-to-back in the Playoff era hasn’t been done. So, to ask for a third I feel like it’s gluttonous. I feel like it’s not OK. But we’ll be in the mix.”-- David Pollack, On3.com, 5/9/23
I hope we can update that date.

Maybe if LSU had been even dumber than us and canned Miles we could have caught Bama on a down year, but now if we make the game we have to face whichever of LSU/Bama/Barn is best that year. Not looking good.

Under Richt I was not afraid of the Barn don’t know Howe Kirby does when it is not the rivalry game.

Does Gus’ single year at arky state really count? Not that his fluky sec title should count, but I’m just saying.
We were posting about this issue last night. Generally speaking, the coaches that have won championships have prior hc experience. It’s not universal, but considerable majority of the national championships since 1960 have been won by coaches in at least their second hc stop.

I won’t be surprise if Richt takes another HC job, has an administration that gives him everything he wants, then he gets their school an NC or two or more.
Personally, I would be happy for him.

Me, too … It would prove that nice guys can finish first.

It will be fun pulling for CMR without the emotional baggage that comes with being a fan of the school.

Richmond.com says Richt was interviewing for the UVA job today. If he winds up there AND gets their school into the CFP…well, color me very surprised. You, too, I’d guess.

Perpetual 9-3 would be an absolute delight for the good people of Charlottesville. It’s a perfect fit.

It’s true that most coaches don’t have amazing (read championship) successes in their first HC gig. But most don’t walk into a situation like Georgia their first go-round either.

Yep. We had that one guy that won one in his 17th season because he recruited a superhuman that happened to be born in the same state. You are right: get the UGA job – win a natty. One neatly follows the other.

Fun fact about that national title game: with 30 seconds left in the game, Herschel had more yards than the entire UGA offense, including himself. Think about that, he gained more yards than the offense to which he was contributing yards, because the rest of the offense was negative.
Dooley really outsmarted the other coach that day.

That’s how the game ended. I’m pretty sure Herschel had 150 and that our total offense was 138. In other words, Herschel had 162 yards more than the rest of the offense.

I wasn’t meaning to imply that I think UGA will win a National Championship under Smart. I think his chances are about the same that Richt’s were each year – probably about 1/15.

I think the odds greatly increase if McColdHeart truly opens the checkbook for Kirby because it’s “his guy,” and success by “his guy” makes him look good… like many speculate he may. I’m not sold that The Georgia Way is to do that, but what do I really “know.”

I think Richt’s odds probably were in that region: 1 every 10-15 years (btw, it’s not even slightly surprising to go 15 years without one and still win them at a 1 in 10 clip).
You are wildly optimistic about Smart, though. The odds of us following up the best coach in program history with the 2nd best (or a new #1) are not super good.

OK. Just stop. Richt won the SEC twice man. Twice. There was this other dude named Dooley who won it a few more times, plus a national title. #34 was the greatest player ever, that is not up for debate, but the rest of those guys were not a bunch of un-coached bums in 1980. Just look at LSU this year to see how far a freak RB can go without a supporting cast. If Hershel had played for Vandy do you think they would have ran the table? I thought so. Come back to reality please. Instead, you guys are going to be claiming that Richt farted gold dust by the end of this decade.

The landscape of college football changes, so it’s difficult to compare winning percentages and conference championships across the decades.
However, we do have one metric which, while not perfect, is independent of how schedules are made or conferences are structured in 1970 vs. 2015: ranking the in the final national polls.
On this metric, Richt absolutely destroys Dooley. It’s not even close. Now, maybe there was a vast conspiracy for 20 years against ranking Dooley’s teams highly. I kind of doubt it.
That’s why it’s crystal clear that we just fired the best coach we’ve ever had to hire a defensive coordinator out of his boss’s shadow. Good luck with that, and by all means be pissed off at me if you like now, but spare a thought for me when you are screaming for Kirby’s head in 3 years.

Coach Dooley won six SEC titles in his 25 years as head coach at a time when they only played six conference games and no championship game. Also, the combined winning percentage of the 12 teams the 1980 National Champions played was less than 48% with only four teams having a winning record. If you are going to put CMR down by comparing him to CVD, at least be honest and do a true comparison.

Didn’t we win the 2002 SEC championship too?

I am imaging Richt to LSU as an OC only to beat Smart in the SEC championship game.

Richt as Bama OC seems more likely.

That, my friends, would be downright scary with Saban and Richt playing off one another.

Just saw the article about Hines wanting to coach at UGA. Receivers coach/recruiting coordinator? That would pucker up some opposing coaches asses on the recruiting trail.

I love Hines, but he’s never coached a day in his life and you’re gonna make him recruiting coordinator?

No not really but a legendary DGD like that? Sheeee-it, somebody figure out a way to get him in the pipeline. Even though I’m old I still get aroused thinking about his downfield blocking.

Coaching is a skill. Just because a guy is a great player does not mean he has the skills to coach.
