I just became a huge Miami Hurricanes fan.
I would LOVE to see CMR win a title there and shame the idiots at B(owel) M(ovement) into realizing THEY are the problem and “The Georgia Way” sucks ass.
I’d rather UGA win one, but Miami is now a close second.

A large portion of the Georgia fan base will likely decide they are willing to follow and hope Miami football does well because our soon-to-be former head coach is taking a job there. What the hell is wrong with that? I may buy a Miami cap in tribute to Richt the man, but I’ll always wear the Power G over my heart and cheer for the Dawgs to win regardless of who is the head coach. If Smart and Richt met on the field, I would cheer for the Dawgs but would respect Richt’s team. Why can’t you show just a little respect for the man?

EE, I do not understand this line of thinking. I get following Miami now that Richt is there. Checking scores online, watching a quarter or two if they are on TV and the game does not conflict with the Dawgs, just as I did with Bobo and Colorado State. I get the impression that many have put Richt above and beyond UGA and its football program. This I do not get nor will I ever. Georgia played football long before Richt came around and I am pretty sure that the Dawgs will still field a team now that he is gone. my love is and always will be for the University of Georgia and those honored to wear the Red and Black.

Skeptic, I’ve been a Georgia fan since the day I was born. I’m a Terry Double Dawg that only seriously applied to one university. I’ve attended Georgia games since 1981 and for the last 14 years drove six hours each way from NC 3+ times per year to use my season tickets that I’ve had since 1992. I’ve contributed to the academic side of UGA starting when I got my first job with the firm where I’m now blessed to be a partner. I loved being able to attend all 7 home games this year with my move back to the Atlanta area. I’m a diehard Bulldog. My love is for my university.
I have a respect for Richt that includes his on-field and off-field accomplishments. I understand you and others feel differently about Richt the coach. If I decided to wear a cap with a U on it, it won’t be without a G or an Arch somewhere most prominent.

If you’re implying that I would pull for The U vs UGA because of Richt, you’re mistaken. I would NEVER pull against UGA in anything. When The U plays FSU, instead of pulling for the meteor to hit the stadium or not caring as I would have prior to this news, I would want to see Miami win because I would like to see Richt be successful. I don’t think there’s a darn thing wrong with that and doesn’t change my Bulldog fandom one bit. I honestly wouldn’t care one bit if others think otherwise.

I was not implying that in the least. My only point is that my loyalty is with UGA and I do not understand rooting for Richt , or any other coach from UGA, now that he is gone. Respect and admire him for his faith and actions? All day and twice on Sunday. Appreciate what he did in the past for UGA? Heck yes. Root for him at another school? Nope. But that is my opinion. Look, a successful Miami is to our advantage. Miami is 680 miles from Athens, so any kid Richt recruits north of say, Gainesville Florida will be closer to us than him. He could recruit right up to Florida’s southern doorstep, however, and really hamper their efforts. He might even have a little negative impact on FSU. If there has to be a powerhouse team in Florida, we want it to be Miami rather than one of those other teams. I sincerely hope he doesn’t land Eason though, UNLESS Kirby decides he wants to switch to the spread.

Richt isn’t going to take recruits from Florida and FSU. Not at Miami. He’ll do about as well as Randy Shannon and Al Golden did. Unless Miami is planning on tearing down the Orange bowl and waving a magic wand to change the demographic in South Florida, it’s still going to have the same problems. The formula for success in Miami involves a much dirtier personality than Richt possesses. He’s not a good fit there.

He’s no clueless idiot. He knew that many would call him a quitter or whatever, but he did what he thought was best, regardless of e impact on him personally.
I know a lot of people in the corporate wolrld that should do the same, but they don’t have the self awareness to know they’re the problem and/or the cajones to resolve it without being pushed.

In the last few years when asked how much longer I plan to coach, I have said often that if our team is going in the wrong direction I need to resign and allow someone else to take over as head coach here. After six games, we were 2-4 with two blow-outs by Georgia and LSU. We were behind at halftime against UCF (a team that went 0-12 this year). We were definitely going in the wrong direction. I felt that I was doing a lousy job as head coach and a change would help our team become more competitive.
I told our team after I resigned that they needed new leadership, new enthusiasm and a new plan. By stepping aside, this allowed Shawn Elliott the opportunity to change our direction, change our attitude, and hopefully, he could be named head coach after the season. If this happens, some of our assistant coaches would be retained, and this was a major reason for me to get out of the way. Also, by resigning, I forfeited the buyout clause in my contract that saved our university three million dollars.
I certainly believe, as the media has said, that our team played better after I resigned. Shawn Elliott did an excellent job getting this team prepared to play with enthusiasm and effort the rest of our season. Unfortunately, the close games turned into close losses.
When I mentioned I may coach again, I meant possibly as a volunteer coach at a high school. After thirty years as a head coach, I positively know that my head coaching career is finished.
I understand the critics have asked why I didnāt announce I was retiring at the end of the season, as some other coaches have done. I felt that if I had done this, I would have been a distraction throughout the remainder of the season about my last game everywhere I went. I did not want a āSpurrier Farewell Tour.ā The players deserve to be the story of each game. Also, it would have prevented Shawn Elliott, a coach that has loved the South Carolina Gamecocks his whole life, from getting the shot to be the interim head coach, with the possibility of becoming the Head Coach here.
When a coach gets fired, the change is often good and helpful to the team. Miami was 4-3 when Al Golden was fired, and the interim head coach went 4-1. Randy Edsall was 2-4 at Maryland when fired and his replacement got the team playing better. Clay Helton, the interim coach at the other USC, was recently named head coach as they went 5-2 under his watch.
Our university was not going to fire me, so I thought it was best for our team that I basically fire myself by resigning. The players have enjoyed playing for Coach Elliott and again the media has said the team has performed better after I resigned.
Thanks to all Gamecocks for allowing me to be your coach for over ten years. My wife Jerri and I will always be thankful and appreciative to the University of South Carolina for this opportunity.
