There’s a lot to get excited about with regard to Kirby Smart taking the helm of Georgia’s football program. He’s a sharp guy who’s trained under the best in the business for years. He’s regarded as a top notch recruiter. He’s got roots in the Georgia program, which can’t hurt among a certain element in the fan base.
In particular, here’s what I like:
- Recruiting. There isn’t a candidate Georgia could have realistically considered for the head coaching job who could do a better job of holding on to Georgia’s solid 2016 class than Smart. Indeed, there’s a likelihood that he’ll be able to build upon that. The initial reaction from recruits who are in play for Georgia has been quite favorable. And while this isn’t a reason in and of itself to hire Smart, it’s certainly not a negative, especially when you consider how important this next recruiting class is in restocking the talent level at Georgia.
- Xs and Os. Yes, I know – he’s Saban’s defensive coordinator and Nick really runs that defense. However true the conventional wisdom is on that perception, there’s still no way Saban keeps a guy around and pays him the kind of money Smart gets just to rely orders and directions from the boss. Smart knows how to coach defense. Hopefully, he also knows from that what kind of offensive approach works, too.
- Scott Cochran. Smart and Alabama’s strength and conditioning coach are close – close enough that Cochran is widely expected to join Smart in Athens. I can’t begin to tell you how big a deal that would be. Suffice to say it would represent a 180 degree turn from how S&C has been handled here for decades. Admittedly, things had started to change in the past couple of years. They’re about to change even more, and that can’t be bad.
- Timing. He’s going to have a decent amount of time to get things in order with staffing and recruiting. If he’s as organized as I would expect someone off the Saban coaching tree to be, the transition should be relatively smooth.
Note that everything there is short term. That’s really all I can judge the move on right now. Anything longer is speculative until we see how he settles in. But at least there appears to be some certainty around the program again and that’s not a bad thing.
Although I’m dreading the barrage of bad puns we’re going to be subjected to over the next few years. I promise to do my best not to add to that.
Those are very good about the man, but other than Scott Cochran I don’t see an upgrade. This class had the potential to be a monster before Sunday’s events.

Kirby will hold it together, and then not only will we have a masterful recruiter with a great class, but we will actually have someone who can be a successful head coach and not shit the bed at the wrong moments. This is going to be great. People who wanted Richt to stay on as head coach are going to look back and wonder what the hell they were thinking.

Yeah, but who would have been? That’s been speculated on for quite some time, that Coach Richt was good enough that no one we could actually get would qualify as a true upgrade until after we got them and they did well here.

True but I would say the process didn’t play out long enough to determine if an upgrade was available. This isn’t a home run hire. It may become one, but I don’t see the evidence of that at this point.

“Your comments are nothing but speculation. I hope he’s successful, but at this time, he’s not an upgrade.”
In the first sentence, you point out that IAmAChubbyMan’s comments are “nothing but speculation.” And then, in the very next sentence, you confidently declare, “he’s not an upgrade.” But of course, at this point, we simply cannot know whether or not Smart is an upgrade. For all we know at this point, he could be a total bust, or he could be the next Bear Bryant. So your own commentary on Smart’s abilities as a HC is also nothing but speculation.

I didn’t make a comment about his abilities, but his qualifications would not qualify him as an upgrade today.

Obviously doesn’t want it to be an upgrade. It seems a lot of talented high school football players disagree with him about Smart.

It could in fact reach greater heights, though I suspect it will shake down as no worse, maybe a little better, in the end.

While I’m very excited about the hire, if nothing else to see tangible change after 10 years of muddling through under CMR, I am worried about any Peter Principle issues that come to the surface. In other words, none of us have any clue just how good of a HC Smart will be, and whether he can make the proper transition.
After all, just because Smart coached under Saban all those years doesn’t automatically mean he’ll be anywhere near as good. The coaching profession is more than littered with such coaching tree examples. What we really should keep our eye on is the OC hire…this is the position Smart MUST get right.
By the way, the news I’m actually most excited about concerns various rumblings I’ve been hearing about Saban taking the Colts job next year. Apparently there is a lot of courting taking place between both parties, and if (bit if) Saban bolts, that will improve our chances at winning the SEC and getting to the playoffs significantly.
Overall, I’m very pleased that we’re finally going in a new direction after years of mediocrity. Sure, we might fall flat on our faces, but I’m willing to bet we’ll be in much better shape rather quickly.
LikeLike
If the Georgia Way continues, then the mediocrity continues. That’s a cause and effect pretty set in iron clad stone around Athens, LOL. I feel for Kirby if he just become another victim of the Georgia Way.
LikeLike
I think there’s a good chance the “Georgia Way’ is going to die. Maybe not immediately, but certainly eventually.
Because now there is clarity as to the mission of our football program. Pure and simple, it’s about winning championships. It’s not about mentoring young men, it’s not about adding to the reserve fund, it’s not about winning 9 or 10 games and going to a New Years Day bowl in Orlando. It’s about winning championships. That’s now the primary objective and the criteria by which the firing of Richt will be judged.
If McGarity and his cabal haven’t realized this yet, they will if Smart gets off to a rocky start. Kirby better win, and win big.

Senator – you are right about the Cochran news. In fact, Bama fans are fretting more about losing him than they are about losing Kirby. What a package deal they will be.

while cochran is a top notch strength and conditioning coach, there is another aspect of his role in the program worth considering. the senator mentioned player discipline issues in his follow up post to this. i believe cochran is a big reason alabama has been able to stay on top of this in recent years.
the S&C coach probably spends more time with players than any other assistant on the staff particularly in the off-season when hijinks are likely to occur. he is in the best position to keep guys focused as well as keeping tabs on how they are doing and spotting when guys are likely to get into trouble.
and he’s a great gameday “get back” coach. cochran’s the guy that pulls smart off the field by his belt when he gets to excited calling plays to remember where exactly he is standing.

I am very hopeful. I’ve been following the Dawgs since 1991 and want the best for the program. While there are many unknowns re Smart I will take those given what has happened with the program the last 5-7 years. Coach Richt should rightfully be lauded for his character and his coaching accumen. We’ve been lucky to have him but the team has been unable to get to that next level. Go Dawgs and good luck to Coach Richt and welcome Coach Smart.

I have been a Georgia fan since 1971 and earned two degrees from UGA and I will continue to contribute to the Hartman Fund and buy season tickets. If Smart does not exceed the most recent results then I say fire McGarity immediately and let his successor evaluate whether to keep Smart.

Yes, Joel Eaves was a great AD. He purged the athletic department of all the Wally Butts cronies and brought the 1950s-1960s Auburn institutional culture to UGA. He brought in Auburn men like Vince and Erk and Jim Pyburn who toughened UGA up.

I looked up Helton given the rumors. What an offense (I know the competition, I understand) but they ran for over 2000 yards and passed for over 4000. That is impressive no matter what level you compete. He also has been the QB coach on several occasions and his QB’s tend to win accolades. He even has a history of “Special Teams Coordinator” for a while. I know, didn’t think that existed. He might be a good hire if the rumors are true.

He’s had two (not counting the game Saturday and the bowl) seasons with the current QB, who has thrown for over 4,000 yds both years, and over 40 TDs (49/10 TD/INT last season, 42/6 this season).
They lost their starting running back early this season, but he had 1,500 yds and almost 500 yds receiving last season (including a 345 yd game on 33 carries.) And his older brother is now the head coach at USC and they’re apparently talking strategy all the time.

It cannot be argued that coach Richt left our program better than he found it. Kirby unlike Sgt. Carter, and Boom is not walking into a dumpster fire. I wish coach Smart the best of luck, but the honeymoon is going to be very short. Go Dawgs! !

Not a dumpster fire, but our offense is bad. #86 in scoring. #76 in total offense. #103 in passing. #119 in third down conversions. #102 in red zone scoring.
What remains to be seen is how much that was coaching and how much was lack of talent on offense. Chubb and Michel are talented, for sure. But was Lambert not coached, or is he uncoachable? Ditto for the offensive line.
I would love it if Helton, or whomever, could come in here, flip some switches, and put up video game numbers. But I’m skeptical about it. We’re going to need some players, too.

Interesting, especially since Spurrier worked in the same athletic department as McGarity.
One of the few things I see eye to eye with Spurrier about.

Two things Coach Smart should know coming in:
1) The pundits say Richt won a lot but didn’t win the important games. Truth is they are ALL important. It won’t fly for you to beat Florida, Tech and Auburn if you lose to Vandy or Kentucky.
2) If you think winning 75% of your games is a good record, think again. While that is better than any other UGA coach, it isn’t good enough. You will need to win the SEC East regularly and the SEC often, no matter what your percentage is.
Best of luck, I’ll be rooting for you.
LikeLike
This just isn’t true. Losing 25% of his games isn’t what did Richt in. Losing to Florida isn’t necessarily what did Richt in. Losing to Alabama by 4 TDs did. Losing by 20+ points to FL 2 years in a row did. Squib kicking to Tech did. Blowing a 21 point lead to UT did. Continual special teams fuck ups did.
This false narrative that Richt was fired bc he didn’t win enough is bullshit and needs to stop. He was fired bc: a) the was not competitive too often, and b) he could seemingly never fix the same problems that kept recurring over and over and over again (namely special teams and OL recruiting).
LikeLike
Careful! I made this same argument yesterday and was called an angry idiot. LOL

So if the loss to Bama is a “close loss” and the two losses to UF are by a few points he’s still the coach? I truly don’t believe that.

Nonsense. The mistakes mattered because they cost games. Nobody cared nearly as much when Richt’s issues didn’t keep us from winning the conference.
Richt was fired because a) he wasn’t competitive enough to win more games, and b) he couldn’t fix the recurring problems that cost us wins.

Also, you have to absolutely beat your rivals more often than not. Can’t lose to Tech, Florida, Auburn, or Tennessee. Good luck indeed.

Senator, from the J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics’s point of view one additional good is that it was an easy choice. He did not have to make any tough evaluations. He figured that because Smart is an alum everybody would love the hire in the short term and he could let the long term take care of itself.
If Smart does not improve the results he can hide behind, “He is one of us and was Saban’s right hand man and all the good ADs wanted him, too!!!”
Please, vendetta guys, this has NOTHING to do with any previous coaches from Herty to Richt, and I am pulling with my heart and checkbook for Smart to win 15 games every single season.

Does anyone besides me remember watching Coach Richt (a Coach with no Head Coach experience) learn on the job and make numerous clock management, time out and problems with extra points for the first 3 or 4 years , Yeah I know we won the SEC in 2002 but please tell me you understand that Greene to Johnson on 4th and 15 was one fluky play My point is that Kirby better not screw us out of even one game by attempting a 60+ field goal because he literally has no margin of error. If he doesn’t win 10 or more games each of his first 3 years he will be a a total waste of time. No pressure though. Hope and Change was crap, has been crap and will continue to be crap. We will regress to the mean and at least one and probably 2 of these regressions (meaning loses more than 3) will be a direct result of the Coach not knowing what he needs to do when he needs to know it.

Welcome home, Kirby Smart!
I suppose I had some bad things to say about Coach Smart when he left UGA after 2005 to re-join Nick Saban, but I can certainly see now that it was the best decision he could have possibly made for his career. And it certainly looks like he kept some love for Georgia all these years. It’s always good to see our guys getting back into the red and black. I have to admit, I hope that the rumors of Will Muschamp joining Smart in Athens are true. We’ll see, though. I have never really gotten the impression that he’s been pining to put the G back on his chest.
The idea of poaching Alabama’s strength coach is exciting, but if he can’t make that happen I hope he keeps Hocke around. I like him a lot, and the players seem to as well. I haven’t noticed any big issues with conditioning since he’s been in Athens.
Either way, I’m excited. There are a lot of unknowns. But we’re bringing home a Bulldog, and he just so happens to be a Bulldog that people in the coaching profession have seen as an up-and-comer for a long time. Let’s see what Kirby can do. Go Dawgs!

Or have I missed something about Pruitt’s status, other than he’s a possible HC candidate elsewhere?

GM is the one who doesn’t want Pruitt around.

Exactly my point. GM needs to get from “I HATE this redneck,” to “I NEED this redneck,” if he wants to give himself the best chance to keep his own job.
If things went down as rumored on that fateful day at Richt’s house, then Pruitt does have some things to learn about professionalism and has some growing up to do (and I think we’ll finally know if the rumors are true depending on if JP gets a HC offer or not), but I’m at the place where I think JP provides the continuity needed to make this the most successful transition possible.
OC is going to be a crap-shoot — bigger than Kirby himself. DC doesn’t have to be.

Well, knowing “how important this next recruiting class is in restocking the talent level”, Kirby needs to get here fulltime immediately after the SECCG. If he doesn’t, he won’t “have a decent amount of time to get things in order”, and the class could fall apart. If he starts immediately, that’s a sign he’s fully committed to his alma mater. If he stays at Bama to coach the playoff and possible NCG, it’s a sign that he doesn’t want to offend Bama so he’ll be in play for the HC position when Saban retires.
