Still going

I gotta admit, this feels… weird.

I know, he’s getting paid and all.  But exactly what kind of sales job do you think he’s doing right now, even if his heart’s still in it?

Are we sure he’s gone? I know rumors abound and all, but it would make sense to keep him as the defensive coordinator if you’re Smart and that’s at all possible.

Of course the ‘Vent’s accurate. That’s why we’re all discussing firing long-time UGA HC Andy “more and more it’s” McCollum. And hearing from former UGA DB Batman Carroll who was a UGA lock.

CKS has them by the balls. Might as well squeeze. I certainly would like to see CJP on the sidelines next fall. Best coach from a recruiting and performance standpoint we’ve had since who? I honestly cant think of a peer in my lifetime. Keep that guy. So he’s an asshole? We’re not asking him to be Miss Congeniality are we?

Pruitt wants to win. That’s the reason why he doesn’t get along with some of the mediocre O coaches (read: Schotty) or waste of space Greg McGarity. Keep Pruitt. Get rid of Schotty and McGarity.

exactly right, Derek. McGarity seriously overestimated his bargaining position, and now Jimmy Sexton and Kirby are going to work him over like a two dollar hooker. If Kirby demands that GMG stop by Butts Mehre every morning at 8 to vacuum Kirby’s car, expect it to happen. I have no idea if KS wants Pruitt, or if Pruitt is 100% sane or polite, but the guy can recruit and coach. OK by me if we keep him. We’ve done a LOT worse.

I, for one, am hoping Pruitt stays. The defense isn’t perfect but it’s heading in the right direction and positively in the right direction. Some continuity in some aspect of the team, especially the best functioning part would do wonders for Smart in his first year.

Agreed. He sells ” opportunity. ” He sells the chance to play with the other guys in the class and being a part of a class that wins big. He sells the graduation rate. He sells the quality of the coeds.

While doing this he is selling his recruiting skills to his next employer.

Sure, that’s part of it, but there are no guarantees in football that the same guy who recruits you will be there four years. These recruits know that. The only constant is that the institution doesn’t change. Georgia is still Georgia, and has a hell of a lot of merits that stand on their own, or have you never been? It’s a damn fine school, one of the best college towns in all of America and one of the premier programs in the most prestigious conference in the country. Absolutely none of those things will change with the coaching staff.

No one goes on to have anything to do with the person that recruits them to the military. I mean come on man. You have to have more on the ball than this. The difference between military and college football recruiters is night and day. Just think about it for a second before you type. It is not even that hard.

Then he looked up at the man and said, “Made a difference to that one.”

Not sure, but I think a firm mea culpa would be appropriate from me to roughly 95% of the folks here. No, not for my continued excitement over the change of HC leadership at UGA that I’ve been wanting for quite a few years—that I know I’m not wrong about, and we’ll all be loving this move in short order as CMR’s tenure had long run its course.

What I would like to apologize for however is my defense of McGarity as of late. I’ve read several articles today that basically implied that Smart has McGarity and the UGA AD totally over a barrel at this point, in which he can pretty much call all the shots. And why would that be the case, you might ask? Well, apparently McGarity, in all his genius, decided to ‘leak’ the news of Smart coming before the deal was done.

This brilliant move suddenly gives Smart all the power in the world, as now the deal MUST get done or McGarity will be sitting there with egg all over his face, and with no coach. So naturally Smart is probably asking for x number of millions more for various support staff, facility improvements…hell he’s probably now even demanding total absurdities like, say, a $4000 margarita machine to be installed in the coaches lounge as well at this point (and I wouldn’t blame him).

So with that, my apologies for defending ADGM; please continue to impugn him to no end…you’ll get no argument from me.

He was terrible with the optics (which is not unimportant when optics are half your job), but its premature to say he’s mishandled the whole thing yet. Until the deal is officially done and the details come out, we won’t really know how he’s handled the tangibly important things.

        Like

        • BR, as I’m sure you know, the firing and hiring of football and men’s basketball coaches are the most visible activities an AD performs. It’s a job where the less they are seen, the better. When they’re seen (or heard from), it’s usually not for some bit of good news. People see GM now and say, “You broke, so you own it.”

If this hire fails or Smart backs away, GM won’t be the one to deliver the message because he’s going to be out. The big boosters behind this decision won’t be sticking up for him (they’re weasels, too, by the way … and I don’t care if I get Masters tickets). Most people who mishandle the optics typically don’t have the skill or self-awareness to handle the “tangibly important things.”

Regardless of how it turns out, this episode and the complete screw-up of Gurley-gate will tarnish his reputation as a competent administrator, much less leader. I’ve said it before he needs some Grady people to help him learn PR and Terry people to help him with his leadership skills.

Totally agree. Way too early to evaluate McG on this hire.

Also — McG was damned if he did, damned if he didn’t on leaking the Smart news. Leaking the news was the only way to calm everyone down and reassure recruits while Smart wraps up at Alabama. If we knew nothing about Smart, everyone would be ripping him for playing pocket pool while everyone else is getting coaches.

McG really needs Smart to win. Richt put McG in a terrible position by maintaining a frustrating level of average. That made the decision way harder and more controversial than it would have been if Richt put up another 6-7 season like 2010.

Even though our schedule and Pruitt’s work were the only things that got us to 9 wins.

      3&G,

If what you’re speculating is true, then McG’s mishandling would actually be a huge blessing in disguise. Smart should be getting his way and calling shots on how money is spent. If this is how he gets what he needs, so be it.

Personally, I think McG would offer full support to Smart either way. Not just because Smart has negotiating leverage, but also because McG’s job is riding on the outcome of this hire.

      McG needs Smart to succeed.

Richt forced McG to do something. But doing something divided the fanbase and turned even more people against McG. At this point, McG really needs this to go well.
