For those of you who watched the SECCG last night – do you really think Georgia’s current defensive personnel match up talentwise from front to back with either of the two defenses we saw? ‘Cause I’m not seeing it, especially on the defensive line.

Hell no. Those guys looked like they have a hell of a lot better S&C coach…ahem.

We’ve had one year of the new guy. I don’t know if he’s any good or not, so I’m not going to comment. If KS brings Cochran with him, great.

S&C gains in mass take time and are tied to good lifting and nutrition. You can build aerobic fitness and stamina much quicker than you can turn an 18 or 19 year old into a Bama lineman physically.
The program is in baby steps as far as modern conditioning for football. It’ll begin paying off next year and the subsequent years.

S&C + Program System + Recruiting = what we saw in the SEC championship game.

On the Alabama side … On the Florida side, you saw recruiting and athleticism on defense but not much else. McElwain has a long way to go to make that offense work even with Grier.

Agreed. Eason may take them to a respectable level if he goes there.

Absolutely NOT. Leonard Floyd would be a situational player on either team and Jordan Jenkins might start for Florida but not Bama.

Jenkins almost went to Bama. They recruited him very hard. I think he would have played there. Of course, his body would likely look much different.
Grantham had Jenkins bulk up too quickly and it wasn’t good weight. His play greatly improved once he trimmed back down. I am guessing Bama S&C program would have been better for him physically.

No way. Recruiting is where it all starts.

Bingo plus a whole lot of numbers. That is what Bama does recruits the hell out of those type guys.

I’ll call out a couple of freshmen who will be those type of players with time in the system – Natrez Patrick and Trent Thompson. I also think Malkom Parrish has become a damn good football player under Pruitt’s tutelage and would be a good complement to Hargreaves. Generally, I would agree with your premise.

No. Those guys looked like they’re already pros. Ours look like kids in comparison … which I guess they are.

Bama’s front 7 in particular looks like an NFL D. So, we arent at that level obviously. But, the gap isn’t as huge as you might think. A big time game with a big time atmosphere tends to enhance the overall talent on the tube more than, say, UGA playing in a high school stadium vs Tech with 4th tier announcers/production.
But yea…we have some work to do, no doubt.

So, you’re thinking Bama holding UF to like 30 yards rushing is part TV production values? I have to admit that made me laugh.

What part of that did you fail to comprehend?

Oh. I got that part. I didnt get how the announcers/product enhance a d that allowed 23 yards rushing. I get what you are saying with the exception that Andre Ware impacts how we see talent levels.

Oh hell no. A friend asked me while we were watching the UNC, Clemson game whether Clemson looked like a championship squad. I said “did you see the size of those Bama players? Clemson and UNC look like high school squads compared to that”. In hindsight what I really meant was that they looked like college kids…the Bama UF Defensive squads looked like minor league NFL football.

Speaking of that…a ref did a number on NC. Calling offsides on the onside kick that the Tarheels recovered was criminal. One would think these zebras would have heard about re-play by now.
North Carolina got Georgia’d.

Yea I wasn’t watching at the time but heard it was a totally bogus call. Shame to get shafted like that….Did you see millionaire soybean wind Dabo chew out his ‘entitled’ punter repeatedly? Classless to show up a kid like that. I get chewing him out, but then going back to the bench to chew him out more?

I’ve seen Muschamp totally humiliate a kid on national TV and even Saban while he was at LSU…..Didn’t expect Dabo to act that way and I’m dissapointed that he did. Those things (should) hurt recruiting.

Come on, with our talent any coach should be able to win the SEC every other year and go to the playoffs and win a national championship, right?

Is it not the coach’s responsibility to recruit and develop and coach….ah never mind

Sure, Saban’s recruiting budget is several times UGA’s. But it has to be. He doesn’t even have hedges.

Exactly! I wish great players just showed up on Georgia’s doorstep, got huge and fast, and learned how to play championship defense automatically like they do at Bama.

The amazing thing is somehow we recruit the same players but their paths diverge once they choose Bama and Athens respectively. Wonder why that was?

It’s certainly not because they enter into The Process, with armies of quality control assistants, S&C staff, and upgraded facilities. That’s just crazy talk.

I would suggest a visit to the campus and facilities at Bama for some of the folks here(not you, you get it) and see what their $$$$ have bought.

If you think we’ve been recruiting and signing the same caliber of players as Bama, once again, you’re dumber than I thought. As far as what happens once they get to their respective destinations, Napoleon nailed it above.

Hmmmm, so Alabama didn’t recruit Jordan Jenkins?

Bama in a class by themselves. FU is good but not as good as Bama. Don’t think FU D is as good as Michigan States D. BaMA and Sparty are 2 well coached teams and it was a pleasure watching them play.
Now UGA has the chance to become a well coached team finally. All the pieces will fall I to place hopefully in the next few weeks.

Florida had 23 yards rushing the football last night. They had 283 against us.
Nuff said.

+1 if anyone thinks we’re in their league defensively, all you have to do is look at the results from when we played both teams this year and reality sets in very quickly. I realize there were special teams snafus, QB/offensive issues, etc., but both teams whipped us good. Like someone pointed out above, we have 1, maybe 2 guys who start at Florida and none at Bama on our current defensive squad.

Amazing how pedestrian even a good defense can look when they’re on their heels all night because of three and outs by the offense, special teams mistakes, and shitty field position.
That said, I agree — Georgia still needs to close a talent gap on defense to be elite. I think we’ve made strides in that direction, but we still have work to do.

Pruitt has started the rebuilding. Like I said in p o posts re Tech game, dawgs have no linebackers. Bama is two deep. It takes awhile to dobthat in recruiring. Grantham put a void in dawgs roster.
But if you think the defense is missing players you need to look closely at the offense. Start at Qb, center, wideouts, oline. This was Richt,Bobo, McClendon, lilly, and Friend’s responsibilty. Go back and look at those classes in.2012, 2013, and 2014. Not good. Plus alot of those signed left.
Roster management and a solid coaching staff. This is where Richt failed, plus too much interfernce from certain boosters on hires.
But they are already behind the curve now due to dead season a week away. That is one month of no contact. Plus we have to wait on Smart and McGarity.
Face the facts. UGA football is on very bad shape. No new hire is going to turn it around in a year or two.
Tennessee and Florida are way ahead of us.

Agree. Rocker has worked miracles with our DL, but we sorely lack size and talent. Getting DLs Thompson, Ledbetter, Hawkins, Rivers and Young last year was a big step forward. Our LB class last year was awesome. Pruitt is/was poised for a very good DL class this year – but who knows what’ll happen now.
Other than RBs and Godwin, offensive recruiting has been lousy for a few years.

I really think that the S&C program went too far this year in trying to slim the guys down. Last year I don’t remember our OL striking me as being undersized, but this year there were some games that when they lined up, they just looked outgunned from the start due purely to size. And for the most part, it was the same guys both years.
On the DL, I think it was a combination of slimming down too much but also playing young guys who haven’t had the chance to fill out.
But I hope next year we see a little more beef. I don’t want beer bellies hanging over their britches, but their really were times that we looked like boys amongst men this year.

They have to build a two deep offense line
Go to a spread.
Bama is good. But Ole Miss has shown they can be beat. Beat their defense two years in a row with two different QBs. Think why.

No offense in east except tennessee. FSU looked better against Florida than Bama. And they playedthem in the Swamp.
We struggle agaonst Georgia Southern at home in scoring. Georgia State romps over them in Statesboro.
That is where dawgs program is.

Also, while we’re throwing out random thoughts, I have no idea what his backup is like, but I’m glad Marquise Williams is a Senior. I don’t think we’re gonna be in any shape to have to outscore teams at the beginning of next year.

His backup is not as mobile, but may have a better arm.
The running backs and receivers are young, so you’ll see most of them in Atlanta.

Bama’s front 7 is arguably the best I have seen at that level. You could probably take the 2 deep at the DL and insert them in the NFL and they would dominate in a very short time.
LikeLike
can we please stop the non sense that bama players could come in a dominate in the NFL? I mean we see that year after year that isnt the case. The NFL is full of grown as men, Alabama’s guys are still college players.

Not non-sense. Take the 3 starters and within 2-3 years they would dominate. They are THAT good.

One thing about Kirby. He will recurit size and strength above all else. That’s Bamas secret. They out physical you. No one will be able to stay with them n the playoff for 60 minutes.

I had similar thought during game: if Kirby comes to UGA can he beat either of these teams (esp. Bama) with equal or lesser talent? I don’t see us out-recruiting Bama while Saban is there, and it’s questionable whether Smart can out-coach his mentor. So much seems to hinge on his OC hire.

I think the talent is there -Bama’ recruited the kids we have. I think the S&C and overall coaching and development wasn’t there. I think it was starting to get there under Rocker. Garner was terrible. Be interesting to see if Rocker stays or if Kirby brings Chris Rumph in.

Let’s wait to draw conclusions until we see what the next 2 years look like………..I’m not quite as euphoric as so many folks here seem to be. I will support our new coaches and staff like I have fro all the coaches since I started school in 1974, but I will expect the same things that were expected to happen to the last coach. The good part is this coach seems to have gotten the full support that the past coach did not have. Go Dawgs & Go Coach Smart. I’ll see you in Atlanta in December either next year or 2017……
