Kirby’s first hire

From Alabama:

Glenn Schumann, who had been a defensive analyst at Alabama, has joined the Bulldogs. Schumann changed his Twitter profile on Monday to say “Assistant Football Coach for the University of Georgia.”

Schumann’s role at Georgia has not been announced. But it’s very clear he will part of the staff in some capacity.

There’s been a lot of background chatter about Schumann, who’s well thought of, apparently.  And he follows a familiar path.

Schumann’s title at Alabama was player development/player personnel. Those were titles that current Georgia assistants Jeremy Pruitt and Kevin Sherrer held while they were at Alabama in the 2000s.

One of Saban “Ernie Adams” type guys–gamplanning, analytics, etc. Smart, progressive thinking. Exactly what UGA has been missing. Slam dunk hire n

There isn’t a whole lot to be found on the interwebs, but this article puts his value to Saban into perspective

There have been a few rumblings that this will be Saban’s last year at Bama, with the NFL being his ultimate destination. Colts owner Jim Ursay in particular wants Saban and allegedly has started the discussions with his agent, Jimmy Sexton.

Given the mass exodus of assistants, I’m starting to think that something might be up. Saban is slated to lose both his OC and DC, along with at least several other assistants at seasons end. At this point, perhaps Saban doesn’t want to go through the hassle of having to replenish most of his staff and ingraining them in ‘the process.’ More so, perhaps Saban’s assistants have at least a whiff of what is to come, hence them cashing in while Bama is still at the top.

    • I really don’t get why Saban would want to go back to the NFL. It won’t be for more money. And the Process doesn’t translate to the pros where there’s a draft and salary cap.

Lombardi Trophy… not that it’s a good reason, but I guess that’s the reason.

I felt the exact same until an article I read a month or so back that quoted an NFL reporter on the issue. Basically, the gist of the article was that Saban feels he has more than proven himself in CFB, and to this day it sticks in his craw that his cup of coffee in the NFL has been deemed a failure.

Saban wants to be viewed among the pantheon of coaches, thus he feels the only thing left he needs to prove is that he can be a successful NFL coach (similar to what Pete Carroll has done in Seattle to cement his legacy, which has made Saban envious). And given the importance of NFL QB’s, in which you have one of the top QB’s in Andrew Luck just sitting there surrounded by a cast of young talent, the Colts job is going to be the most coveted in many years.

Lastly, he apparently has been leading on great friend Bill Bellichick more and more about making the jump back, with Bill encouraging him to do so. All in all, this all might be total BS, but it did make quite a bit of sense overall, and you’re starting to see more and more NFL types float the idea of Saban making a return, along with David Shaw as well within the next 1-2 years (Goddell wants to see Shaw coaching an NFL team asap).

      • I don’t get it either.

Maybe ego? Maybe, a feeling that he wants to prove to himself that he can succeed at that level?

I think he would be better on one of the ESPN shows. He has a dry sense of humor.

      • If you’ve ever heard Saban talk about why he came back to college, it makes it sound doubtful he’d ever go back to the NFL. Like Bluto said, his process doesn’t work at the next level.

If you ever heard Saban say that he wasn’t going to be the coach at Alabama, he made it sound doubtful that he was going to be the coach at Alabama.

There are a lot of reasons I think Saban is more likely to hang it up than go to Indy. 1 is Irsay. However, what comes out of Saban’s trap ain’t one of them.

    • If the is Saban’s last year at Alabama and the staff has wind of it, why wouldn’t CKS stay and slot in as the HC? Perhaps, the Alabama Athletic Department has the foresight to tell them they have no shot, but why do it so far in advance? Did Bill Battle contract Jerry Krauss disease?

I am not saying Saban is staying but it seems like if he was definitely gone I doubt Bill Battle is unaware. I think it more likely that Saban has expressed to Smart a desire to stay at Bama for 3+ years hence CKS deciding now was the time to become a head coach at a Power 5 job.

That, and I just don’t see Bama hiring someone with no previous HC experience. Remember, their way is the antithesis of the Georgia Way.

          • Really? The professional manner in which Alabama operates is directly attributed to Saban. I think Bill Battle is astute enough that they wouldn’t necessarily hand over the reins to CKS but if Nick Saban gave CKS his endorsement it would carry a lot of weight.

Let’s not give the University of Alabama too much credit for the way they do things. Two of the “Mike’s”, Dubose and Shula, had not been HC’s before being tapped to lead the Crimson Tide. They hired Mike Price who had experience as a Head Coach but not with strippers.

The Alabama way of doing things landed them on probation which caused Dennis Franchione to leave for A&M. It also landed them on probation during the time of Gene Stallings. The Alabama way included offering a contract renewal to Bill Curry that removed the HC’s ability to hire and fire assistants. Curry left for Kentucky instead. They also ran off Ray Perkins too.

Watch the truth be that Saban wants to win a MNC at a different college to cement his legacy with “The Process” and is available for hire by, say, Texas. Most UGA thing ever to get the wrong guy. Did anyone even ask?

CKS is definitely rolling the tide…(see what I did there?) How much “poaching” do we think he’ll actually pull off? Interesting to me that if it’s so perfect in T-town why the exodus of “the influence?” Kirby must’ve made some good buds in his 9 years.

Just can not believe Kirby can poach anyone without asking Saban first. Maybe he is leaving and Smart knows he has no shot, and Saban allows him to take who he wants.

Lets analyze this logically. Saban has to be closer to the end of his career than to the beginning. Kirby was the, I think, longest serving assistant. All my Alabama friends like Kirby. The assumption in most circles was that at some point Kirby was the HCIW even if not named as such. So is there some reason Kirby finally said enough is enough and spit the bit? He has to be in the loop on the Process and Saban’s plans. So why Georgia and why now. I personally think Saban is going to ride off into the sunset not this year but in another year or two. He will have a monumental task rebuilding his coaching staff unless as I believe part of the Process was assembling depth in his coaching staff through the massive number of coaches on the Administrative staff. I think he will promote from within. He is about to show why he like his mentor Bill Bellichik are football geniuses. While most of the AD’s have limited the QC support staffs Saban has been expanding his with quality young coaches that are in effect apprenticing for a field coach job. Look no further than Pruitt, he goes from QC staff to DB coach to FSU DC to UGA DC. I think we are about to be awed by the Bama Way. What I fear is when Saban does leave Alabama will come calling and if Kirby ain’t happy with our dysfunctional athlete department he will be gone.
