Mark Richt departs and things immediately go to pot.
UGA freshman defensive end Chauncey Rivers was arrested for possession of marijuana.
According to an Athens-Clarke County jail booking report, Rivers was arrested at 1:12 a.m. Saturday morning for possession of one ounce or less of marijuana, which is a misdemeanor. His bond has been set at $1,000. As of 2:40 a.m., Rivers was listed as “currently incarcerated,” according to jail records.
Rivers was arrested on Nov. 4 for misdemeanor possession of marijuana after admitting to smoking in a UGA campus parking lot with teammate Natrez Patrick. The two Bulldogs were suspended for the Kentucky game on Nov. 7.
Since that’s Rivers’ second offense – in less than two months! – he should be gone for a while.
According to the UGA student-athlete handbook, Rivers is subjected to a suspension of “no less than 30 percent of the total sport season.”
That would be four games, if you’re counting. That’s not the way things worked in Tuscaloosa.
New here but very interesting situation we have here with rivers, I’m not going to get into the “is it bad to smoke pot debate” the fact is its against student/athlete policy and that’s it. What I find interesting is how often Smart may be handcuffed by this ” Georgia Way” and if he likes being handicapped right out the gate without even coaching a game yet. Also, will Pruitt and Smart be holding hands on the BAMMER sideline during the semi final game ? Does anyone else find that very weird or what ?

I said before on here when Smart was hired that we needed him on “our” job full-time immediately. Not gonna list all the reasons again, but a number of posters said it was no big deal that he’s coaching Bama and that it was even good for UGA – wtf? Funny how if it’s such a good thing that Pruitt isn’t hanging around to coach our bowl game. You can argue all you want about loyalty, etc., I think it’s a rookie mistake by a first time HC.

We every day encounter some law we do not like and make the choice to obey them or not. If we ignore and get caught we serve the penalty. The kid is guilty and Kirby has no say in what the consequences or, he also knew what the rules were when he signed on. Former coaches have had to abide by rules and so shall the new guy.

The NCAA has a rule limitigate on field position coaches. Since no Alabama position coach has left yet there is no room for Pruitt to be a position coach. He can stand on the sidelines and do whatever John Eason did on our sidelines but it seems to me he can’t be coaching any positions.

Coaching the game is secondary in my opinion. It’s being able to participate during practices, handle administrative functions that come with being the HC, observe and evaluate the players during practice and determine the direction you want to go moving forward. In the case of CKS it also allows him to show a commitment to his new players and team and set the tone in terms of his expectations. Being visible with the team/staff during those 12 extra practices is very helpful because his contact with the team is very limited until Spring practice after the bowl game.

I don’t know how anyone else feels, but Auburn has two QB’s that were and are worse than ours. I mean, they couldn’t hit sand if they fell off a camel in the desert. Thanks but no thanks on that trade. Will be interesting to see how Kirby does handle this. The kid obviously enjoys getting high and has a problem. He obviously didn’t learn his lesson in November.

I’d guess a lot of people who post on this blog “have a problem” too. Coyones? Where are you? Mac? Last time I checked scotch, a form of alcohol, was a drug. We need to quit shooting ourselves in the foot with a drug policy unlike any other in the SEC. This is evidence that nothing has really changed in Athens–just a few names and faces.

Mayor, we don’t know if things have changed. I’m assuming they won’t because the AUC will crucify Morehead, McGarity, and Smart if they change the drug policy. I think the first thing Towers or Emerson do is scan the ACC police blotter to see if they can find something to write about.
Senator, I guess we start the list of things Smart has lost control of …
On Rivers, these guys know the policy before they sign the scholarship agreement. Regardless of your stance on MJ or other drugs (mine is regulate and tax the hell out of it), it’s the policy and should be enforced until it’s changed.

Things don’t get changed without complaints about stupid rules. I will continue to complain about this putting UGA behind our rivals.

Yes, because studies show that enabling illegal behavior – repeat offenses in particular – is key to on-the-field success. How about we first try better coaching, improving depth and S&C, and attentive game management before we decide UGA needs to cheat and sleaze its way to a title. And I’m not talking about the stupidity of UGA drug testing after Spring Break week or Jimmy Williamson profiling FB players, just coddling miscreants whose repeated flouting of team rules is likely an indication they’ll be undisciplined in practice, the weight room and classroom. This is the consumate team sport after all.

The issue is not whether a plant should be illegal, I really don’t care about that. The issue is; there is a rule that players cannot have the plant. Rivers has decided the rule doesn’t apply to him. He has broken the rule twice in about 5 weeks. How Kirby handles this will set the precedent for his career at Georgia. I think he should kick Rivers off the team. He should let the other players see that he is deadly serious about following the rules.
Kirby may decide to go soft, it is his decision. If he does, he had better be prepared to deal with lots of situations like this.

Let me speak on behalf of all the reprobates who attend or have attended the University of Georgia. Isn’t it illegal to drink alcohol if you are under the age of 21? A misdemeanor as I recall. Have you ever done that back when you were younger? I’m looking at you Ug, Jason, Blake and JC. Should you have gotten suspended from school or an athletic team you were on, if any (I was on one), because you drank a beer under age? Marijuana has been legalized in 3 states already and is only the minor-est of offenses every where else. Let’s get into the 21st century here peeps instead of pretending it’s 1965.

For real. The finger waggin’ is ripe with hypocrisy, as their other hand stirs their drink. Oh, but that plant is against the law to possess, no matter how benign it is, compared to alcohol? Well then, let’s talk of other “atrocities” that used to be for/against the law.. slavery, voting rights, and prohibition.. sure would be nice if we could, I dunno, change some laws, sometimes, especially when the majority declares it to be bad. Don’t like me comparing marijuana incarceration to the others listed above? Imagine how many people whose lives have been affected thus far due to these bad, money-granbing laws. That’s where your answer lies, follow the money trail. Interesting to see that the prison guard union, privately owned prisons, tobacco, and alcohol lobby are the leaders in the fight against common sense, and the ones who stand to lose the most money/jobs.

Agree or not, feder all law still trumps state law. Therefore, it is illegal in all 50 states until federal law changes. Because the feds do not push enforcement, does not alter the status legally. As the others have said, even if legal at the state level, campus rules dictate a certain response. Fight to have the rules changed, don’t just arbitrarily ignore those you don’t like. He knew the rules, he chose to ignore, he deals with the consequences.

I also did a lot of other things that I am not real proud of..Does that mean I’m not supposed to counsel young people not to be foolish?
What are we going to do? Throw all attempts to control bad decisions by young people away because we weren’t (and won’t be) perfect people.
