Adios, Russ.
It's with a heavy heart that we announce that Uga IX, affectionately known as Russ, has passed away. #DGD https://t.co/7VCZdIygEc

4 UGAs in 7 years. Russ was a DGD. Here is hoping Que has a long run.

Russ was also fully grown when he was made Uga – when you consider the age difference with him vs. where the other Ugas were, had he been made Uga at the same age we’d be looking at several more years of him.

4 UGAs in 7 years sounds like the gene pool is gettin’ kinda shallow…
Bear Bryant, JoePA, and Russ all went within weeks of quitting. Couldn’t somebody have sold Michael Adams on their retirement plan?

Russ died at age 11, which is right at the average lifespan across all dog breeds.

Explain those other 3.

Well, really it’s only explain the other two. Two of them lived short lives. Russ started as Uga when he was already 5 or 6, so the fact that he made it as long as he did is a testament to his health. The latest one is obviously brand new so the jury is still out (and hopefully will be for a while).

11 is the low end, not the average.

It pisses me off that these people are still the only ones allowed to “supply” UGA with a dog. It is painfully obvious that they are inbreeding these dogs to the detriment of their overall health. I know Bulldogs have a shorter life span than many dogs, but this is ridiculous. Watching the last few on the sidelines it is plain to see that something is very wrong. I have friends who have the same dog and at 8-10 years old they have more energy than any of these dogs have at any age. I feel bad for the dogs.

My dad is a veterinarian. He said you almost never see English Bulldogs live past 10. Said 10 is very old for one, 11 is ancient. So Russ did well.
Granted, there have been issues with some of our other ones of late. But Russ is an example of a success story from lifespan standpoint, not an example of further problems.

Exactly. Say what you want about the Seliers and the breeding practices of our Uga line, but Russ was one of the good ones. We’ll learn a lot more about their breeding with Que and his ongoing health.

Go complain on sting talk. If you don’t personally know what the Seilers do and give, shut your yap.

I don’t ‘personally’ know, but they can go f*ck themselves. What they have done with that line of dogs is almost animal cruelty.
Happy to see that Russ, with some modicum of genetic diversity and having been selected because he had already demonstrated the ability to live more than a few years, enjoyed a decently long life.

Greg I bet if you agree to match Sonny’s Hartman Fund donation, you could proly get a Dawg in the hunt, there.

Yeah, they had bad luck with two in a row (VII and VIII). Russ lived to age 11, which is more than healthy for a bulldog and average for any dog.
Nine Ugas have served and died since 1956, and that includes two who didn’t live long.

RIP, Russ.
Fortunately Que looks to be one of the healthier ones in a while. Hopefully they’ve fixed the breeding issues and will make sure he gets his exercise!

Those idiots don’t even realize the live version of their mascot doesn’t have a meaningful use and is just a nuisance. I think they barely live beyond a season. Disgusting maggots …

Yeah. When I think of yellow jackets I think of them congregating around trash cans. Between that and their shitty jalopy they rival UC Santa Cruz or whatever California school has the Banana Slug as their mascot for most lame.

You’re dead-on, it’s Santa Cruz that are the Banana Slugs (as seen on Travolta’s Tshirt in “Pulp Fiction”).
And R.I.P. to a Dawg that spanned some tumultuous days on the gridiron.

Meh…Russ was ok, hadn’t won the East in years, never an SEC championship, sniffed a national championship, though.

That was the think about Ol Russ. DGD but really inherited talent from his predecessors who departed too soon. Was consistent, but you could tell he settled for mediocrity. Happy to see we put Que in this season…clearly Russ was getting too old and soft. Frankly we need change to stir things up. If Que isn’t up to a natty in two years, we should replace him too. UGA is simply too good of a program for us to accept a mediocre mascot.
How long does that damn elephant in Bammer live?

Wait. Immediately regret that post. Que is new and is having to clean-out Russ’ Dawg House. It’s going to take him a while to implement his own brand of mascotting. Give him at least a couple of years to get things straight and then expect at least an SEC East crown. Forget competing with the Capital One Mascot Challenge Award for a few years.
How old is that ugly falcon they fly around on the Plains?

My understanding is they breed “Uga line” of males with several dogs around the state to always have choices to select from. If so, I don’t know how you could do this any better without breaking the lineage completely or changing breeds. You can argue they may have made some poor choices but I doubt they do that in isolation, I think there is some vet scrutiny involved. With an 8-10 life expectancy range, there will always be more turnover than you get with Ralphie, Bevo, Mike, or the Arky Hawg.
Que is unbeaten, seems to be many more decisions being made that deserve our concern.

Let me add, dog breeders ususally make sure their dog’s genes are spread outside their family lineage tree when breeding. The new breeding becomes the lineage and inbreeding is avoided when careful records are kept (thus AKC certification, etc.). Good breeders usually go back to dogs that possessed the best standard (as judged in dog shows) and bring those breed lines back into play. No dog breeder would ever allow interbred accidents to be presented. English Pointers were generally given as housepets/gun dogs/what-have-you back in my day and were never registered. Sometimes males were neutered or snuffed to prevent future genetic aberrations getting registered (and it was never done without careful consideration of the dog and the breed nor without feelings) . Sometimes entire litters are snuffed due to an unusual circumstance that would call the breed into question in any manner.
The inbred accusation does not belong with the Seilers nor any legitimate dog breeder. That does not stop unscrupulous people from creating dog mills to sell inbred puppies.
True dog breeders like the Seilers are light years ahead of silly unknowing remarks aimed at the breeder and the Dawg line out of ignorance.
Since Uga VIII and Uga IX were litter mates, their age has varied from dog to dog and according to luck. That circumstance also affects cancer rates in humans according to recently published findings in Nature and Science.
